Description

June 27;, 1933. w. c. HIERING HAND BAG Filed July 6, 1932 l arr. $52M,
INVENTOR. .i 2%606 ATTORNEY! Patented June 2?, i933 uNrr STATES.
PATENT OFFIC Application filed July 6,
considered that the cramping or clamping operation must be performed after the bag is covered, it is obvious that the operation is not convenient or readily and neatly performed without some skill.
It is an object of this invention to'provide a device for attaching bag covering material to frame members without requiring crimping or clamping operations after the bag has been covered. .1
A further object is the provision of a device for attaching covering material to bag frame members comprising inlays to which covering material is attached before the bag is covered, said inlays being then snapped into the frame members without necessitating crimping or clamping operations of any kind.
A further object is the provision of a simple and inexpensive device for securing bag covering material to frame members.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hand bag embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, partially in section, showing a step in the process of attaching covering material to a frame member,
Figs. 3 and 4 show other steps in the process of attaching covering material to a frame member,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an inlay em ployed in the device,
When it is I O1 MILLBURN TOWNSHIP, ESSEX COUNTY, NEW JERSEY,
COIIITANY, OF NEWARK, NEV JERSEY, A CORPORA- HAND BAG 1932. Serial No. 621,033.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of inlay,
Fig. 7 is a view showing a step in the process of making a right angled corner of a channelled frame member, and,
Fig. 8 shows inlay plates adapted to be used to strengthen the corners of a frame member as shown in Figs. 1 and 7.
Referring to the drawing, there is a pair of hingedly connected bag frame members 3 and 4% of similar shape. Each frame member is of the channel type with the channel opening outwardly and laterally relative to the frame and hand bag. The frame member comprises an inner side wall 5 shown having an upper flange 6 and a lower flange 7, said flanges being at right angles to the side wall 5. The upper flange 6 is provided with a downwardly directed flange 8 parallel to the side wall. The lower flange 7 is provided with a plurality of spaced slots 9 for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The frame member is U-shaped with rightangled corners, and comprises a longitudinal section A and legs B, each of which is constructed to receive a folded inlay 10 having bag covering material From the folded edge of the inlay are struck out spaced lips 12 having their upper edges straight and their lower surfaces rounded.
In operation, the inlays 10 are crimped over three edges of the covering material 11 (see Fig. 1) after which the inlays are inserted in the longitudinal section A and legs B, the open edges of the inlays being positioned beneath the flange 8, and then snapped permanently into place by forcing the lips into the slots 9 as shown in Fig. 4. The rounded lower surfaces of the lips facilitate their insertion inthe slots, while the straight upper edges of the lips prevent them from being withdrawn.
From the above description, it will be seen that T have presented a device for facilitating and permanently attaching bag covering material tobagframe members. When the inlays have been inserted in the channeled frame members and the lips snapped into the slots 9, they practically cannot be removed without resort to a tool. As will be seen from 11 crimped thereto. 7
the above description, the assembly of the device is very simple and convenient, it being merely necessary to crimp the covering material in the inlays, and then to snap the inlays into position in the frame members, and no clampingor crimping is necessary after the bag has been covered.
In Fig; 6 is shown a modified form of inlay consisting of a plate having tabs 21 bent over to secure bag covering material to the plate. The inlay is then inserted into the frame member in the same manner asexs plained for the inlay 10, the plate 20 being provided with lips 22, which aresnapped.
into slots in the frame member to prevent withdrawal of the inlay.
The manufacture of laterally opening channelled frame members having rightangled corners is rather diflicult. It has been the practice to form a sheet of metal into a channel shape as shown and then cut portions for the longitudinal section and legs, the adjacent ends of the longitudinal section and legs being mitered and then soldered." The soldering operation is inconvenient and time consuming, and to obviate thenecessity of soldering, I cut a triangular section from a channelled strip at the point where it is clesired to form a right-angled corner, (see dotted lines in Fig. 7) after which a right-- angled plat-e is inserted in the corner to assist in holding the parts together and to strengthen the corner.
- The plates may be of the type shown in .2 Fig. 8. That is, a right-angled plate 31 may be spot-welded to hold the corner intact; or the lower flange 7 7 can be provided with slots 32, and 33, to respectively receive tabs 34 and 35 of a plate 36. The plates 31 and '36 occupyan inappreciable amount of space and do not interfere with the inlays 1 The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment maybe constructed including many modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A hand bag frame member having an inner side wall having upper and lower flanges, the upperflange having a downt 'lllgled flange parallel to the side wall, the lower flange having a plurality of spaced slots, and an inlay to which bag covering material is attached, said inlay being adapt- L' ed to be inserted in the frame member and having integral lips arranged to enter the slots in the lower flange to prevent withdrawal of the inlay from the frame member.
2. A hand bag'frame member having an inner side wall having upper and lower a and lower flanges,
flanges, the upper flange having a downturned flange parallel to the side wall, the lower flange having a plurality of spaced slots, and folded inlays to which bag covering material can be crimped, said inlays be ing adapted to be inserted in the frame memher, and means on said inlays to enter said slots to prevent withdrawal of the inlays from the frame member.
3. A hand bag frame member having a longitudinal section and legs to provide a U-shape, said frame member having an inner side wall with upper and lower flanges, the upper flange having a downturned flange parallel to the side wall, and an inlay to which bag covering material can be attached, said inlay being adapted to be inserted in the frame member, said inlay and lower flange having interfltting means to enable the inlay to be snapped into and prevented from withdrawal from the frame member. I
4. 1 In a hand bag, a U-shaped frame member having an inner side wall with upper the upper flange having a downturned flange and the lower flange having a plurality ofspaced slots, inlays positionedin the frame member, lips on said inlays entering the slots to prevent withdrawal of the inlays, and bag covering material 'secured to the inlays. e
5. In a hand bag,a'U-shaped frame memher having an inner side wall with upper and lower flanges, theupper flange having a downturned flange and the lower flange having a. plurality of spaced slots, channelled inlays positioned in the frame member with the open sides of'the inlaysbeneath the downturned flange, lips on said inlays entering the slots to prevent withdrawal of the inlays, and bag covering material-crimped in the .channelled inlays.
