Description
June 20, 1933. K. B. FORD 1,914,825
BATHTUB Filed Aug. 13, 1930 INVENTOR w 6 2 BY ATTORNEY Fatcnted June 2&1, 1%33 Wires snares KELSIE 3. FORD, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY Application filed August 13, 1930. Serial No. 474,997.
This invention relates to bath tubs and my improvements are directed to the provision of a hand rail, incorporated in the structure of the tub, along its wall, to afford 5 facility in rising within the tub..
With this and other objects in View my invention consists in the formation of a vertical recess extending into the wall of a bath tub from is top surface, thus dividing said wall, at its upper pa'rt, into two spaced portions; also in the formation of a slot through the inner wall portion, whereby there is produced a hand rail that forms the innerperimeter of the wall.
This rail may be reinforced by webs that occur at intervals between the outer wall portion and said rail.
, Still further my invention includes the provision of removable covers that are adapted to. close the recess when the bath tub is not in use.
Other features and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bath tub having recesses and slots which co-act to form a hand rail.
Fig. 2 is a top plan'view of Fig. 1, this view also showing a 'cover that closes a recess in the wall; and
I Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In'said views let,A indicate a bath tub which may be generally of usual construction, but in which my improved hand rail is incorporated.
The said hand rail is indicated by the reference character B, and is produced by forming a vertical recess C in the upper 40 part of the bath tub wall, said recess being open at the top of said wall, and also by forming a slot D that opens into recess C through the inner portion of the wall.
In the drawing I have shown the rail 3 as extended along both sides of the tub and at the curved end thereof and at intervals there are provided webs E of material that connect the rail to the tub, to reinforce the rail at these points.
59 In order that the recess 0 may be closed and thus permit the tub to present a more finished appearance, when not in use, I provide one or more covers F which are adapted to fit in countersunk seats Gr provided therefor along the top of the recess, said covers having hand holds H whereby they may be placed in position and removed therefrom.
Variations within the spirit and scope of my invention are equally comprehended by 60 the foregoing disclosure.
I claim: J
A bath tub having a recess in the upper part of its wall, the top of said recess being provided with countersunk seats and a slot opening into said recess through the inner face of said wall, a hand rail defined by said recess and slot, said hand rail having its top side flush with the top of said wall, and a removable cover adapted to engage said seats 0 whereby the upper face of said cover, the top side of the rail and the top of said wall are disposed in the. same horizontal plane.
