An object of this invention is to prov de an exceedingly simple gun support which may be readily attached to the present parts of a vehicle so as to releasably hold the gun in a position where it can be readily taken down by the driver of the vehlcle with a minimum of effort.

Another object of this invention is to provide a support of this kind which Wlll maintain the gun in a fixed position out of the way of the driver or passenger of the vehioleand which will not readily become loosened through vibration of the vehicle.

The above and various other ObJects and advantages of this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanymg drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a detail top plan view of a gun supported by means of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention;

Figure 3 is an enlarged perspectlve vlew of another of the supporting members, and

Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the intermediate supporting bracket.

Referring to the drawing wherein 11ke numerals of reference designate correspondlng parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a gun in the form of a rifle or shotgun which is provlded with a conventional butt 11 and a barrel 12.

In order to conveniently support or hold the gun 10 in a vehicle in a position out of the way of the driver or passenger of the vehicle and in a position where it can be readlly removed for use, I have provided a butt support, generally designated as 14,- and a barrel support 15, the barrel support engaging the outer end of the barrel 12 and the butt support 14 engaging the inner end of the butt 11.

body plate 16 which may be secured to a wall of the vehicle or other fixed support by means of screws or bolts 13 or thelike. Outwardly extending side plates 17 are formed with the base or body plate 16 and extend at substantially right angles thereto and an end plate 18 is formed with the side plates 17, so as to closeone end of the rack or support 14. The opposite end of the rack 14 has a hinged closure 19 which is held in releasable position by means of a latch 20 which is yieldably mounted on one of the plates 17 by means of a spring'21. The butt of the rifle is adapted to bepositioned within the recess formed by the sides 17 and the end walls 18 and 19, and thereby held in this position until the end wall or door 19 is swung into released position. The interior of the butt support 14 may be lined with leather 22 or other material so as to cushion the butt of the rifle within the support 14. v l V While I have disclosed the lining 22 as being constructed ofleather, Ido not wish to be limited to this particular construction as this lining may be made of fabric, rubber or other flexible material,

The barrel supportor'bracket15 comprises .a pair of base plates 23 which have a U-shaped barrel supporting member-24 formed therewith and disposed in outstanding relation to thebase plates 23; 'The space between the parallellegs of the gun support 24 is'preferably filled with a cushioning element 25 in the form of rubber or other flexible or pliable material and one of the legs of the barrel support 24 is provided with an opening 26, and in like manner, the cushioning member 25 is provided with an opening or recess '27 into'which the free or outer end of the barrel 12 is adapted to be projected so as to cushion thisend of thebarrel in the bracket '15. v i

Preferably, the opening 26 in the support 14 is relatively larger than the opening or recess 27 so that the end of the barrel 12 within the recess may have relative movement in the cushion 25 without contacting with the metal of the bracket 15. Preferably, the opposite end of the cushioning member 25 is closed so that the endof the barrel 12 cannot project entirely through the barrel supporting member 24 and so as to prevent the butt 11 of the gun from pulling out of the pocket formed by the butt support 14. The plates 28 may be secured to a wall or portion of the vehicle by means of screws or bolts 28 or the like. Where the gun is relatively long or heavy, the gun intermediate its ends may be supported by an intermediate bracket 29 of substantially L-shaped constructon which may be secured to a wall of the car or vehicle by means of screws or bolts'30.

In the use of this device, the barrel of the gun is first placed in the recess or pocket 27 in the cushioning member and after the door or gate 19 has been swung into open position, the butt end 11 of the gun may be moved into the butt support 14 and releasably locked therein by swinging the door or end member 19 upwardly so as to engage the latch or looking member 20. Preferably, the door 19 is positioned with the hinge lowermost so that when the latch 20 is swung into released position, the door will gravitatingly swing downward int open position, thereby permitting the immediate and prompt release of the gun from the supporting elements.

It will be obvious, from the foregoing, that the gun 10 may be readily and easily supported in a position convenient to the driver or passenger of the vehicle, the gun being so supported that it cannot be readily released by a person sitting rearwardly of the driver where the gun is mounted at one side of the driver of the vehicle.

It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.

What is claimed is 1. A gun support of the character described comprising a bracket member adapted to engage the barrel of a gun, a cushioning member within said bracket and engaging said barrel for cushioning the barrel within the bracket, a second member adapted to engage the opposite end of the gun, locking means carried by one of said members for releasably locking one end of the gun in said one member, and a bracket disposed intermediate the ends of the gun and cooperating with said members in supporting the gun in a fixed position.

In combination, a pair of brackets each adapted to engage one end of a gun for supporting the gun from a fixed support, one of said brackets having a U-shaped outstanding member, a cushioning member dis- 7 posed between the parallel legs of said U- member, said cushioning member having a socket opening through one face thereof adapted to receive the end of the barrel, the other of said brackets including a socket member, and releasable locking means for releasably locking the opposite end of the gun in said socket member.

3. In combination, a bracket having an outstanding portion, a cushioning member carried by said outstanding portion and having a socket adapted to receive the outer end of a gun barrel, a second bracket adapted to receive the butt of the gun, said second bracket having a hinged end portion whereby to permit the placement of the gun butt therein, and yieldable latching means for holding the hinged end in closed position.
