To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, F REDRIOK TUCKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Chambers and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bugg Bodies, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide, in combination with a buggy body, a locker wherein there may be kept the lap robes and various other articles it is customary to carry in a vehicle of this character. The locker also makes provision for the locking of the whip by placing the butt of the same inthe locker, therebeing means for engaging the whip and holding it in place when the locker is secured and locked.

While illustrated and described in a specific embodiment, the invention is not to be restricted to such embodiment. The right is reserved to make such changes and alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are compatible with the annexed claims.

As illustrated the buggy body 1 is constructed according to the usual plan, having the seat supporting means 2 disposed substantially. at an intermediate point at its length. Below the seat supporting means 2 and extending to the rear end of the body the space comprehended thereby is designed to be employed as a locker and to this end a lid or cover 3 is hingedly attached to the seat support 2 at the rear and when closed lies down on top of that portion of the body hehind the seat support.

At the front of the seat support and hinged. at the floor of the body there is a door 4 which swings up to a position of closure when its free edge abuts the bead 5 attached to the seat support. The door 4 carries a hasp 6 which engages a staple 7 carried by the seat support and when a lock, such as a lock 8 is attached to the staple, the door 4- is obviously secured in closed position.

The locking means for the door 4, herein shown as the lock 8, also serves as a locking means for the cover 3 011 the under face of which adjacent the edge opposite from that which is hinged, there is attached a chain 9 which extends to the bottom of the body and is trained over a sheave pulley 10, the chain passing thence toward the front of the body and being trained.over a sheave pulley 11 from which it passes through a suitable opening formed in the door 4- adjacent its hinged end and thence passes upwardly to r the staple 7 to have its eye 12 engaged over the latter before the lock 8 is attached to the hasp. The chain is of such a length that when the eye is attached over the staple the cover 3 is held in closed position. In order that the cover may not be pried up at its side edges, the diagonally disposed chains 13 are provided and have one end connected to the cover 3 adjacent the corners formed by the outer side edges and the rear edge, the other ends of the chain being connected into the chain 9 at a point above the sheave pulley 10. When it is desired to raise the cover 3, the chain may be released from the staple 7 by disengaging its eye 12 therefrom. The cover may then be raised until the eye 12 is brought into engagement with the sheave pulley 11. This obviously will not permit the cover 3 to be raised. as high as it may sometimes be desired. There is therefore included in the chain 9 a snap book 14 by means of which the chain may be separated into two sections. This will obviously permit the cover 8 to be raised as high as is desired because that portion of the chain connected with it may be raised with it, leaving the remainder of the chain lying in the bottom of the buggy.

Carried by the door 4 and straddling the hasp 6 and the chain 9 adjacent the eye 12 there is a U-shaped member 1.5 which serves as a hand grip for opening the door 4 when the lock 8 is released.

To provide means for locking the whip usually carried with a buggy, there is set in the upper edge of the door at on one side of the hasp 6, an inverted U-shaped member 15 provided with flanges 16 lying flush with the upper edge of the door 4 serving to secure the U-shaped member in place with the door.

When the door is opened the butt end of the Whip may be inserted in. thelocker and the whip caused to lie in the U-shaped member 15. When the door is closed, the U-shaped: member 15' is so dimensioned that the butt end of the whip may not be drawn therethrough but to further insure the whips being retained in the locker a book 1? is provided and pivotally mounted on the inner face of the dOOr-l by means of a screw. 18, the pivot point of the hook being disposed below the horizontal plane of the U-shaped member and' t'oone side of the vertical plane thereof. (Dbviously when the butt end of the whip isback against the rear end of the body, that portion of the whip engaging the bi -shaped member 1'5 will be 01" comparativeliy small diameter thus allowing the hook to drop low enough where it will*' clear the lower edge of the seat support, thus permitting-the door to be readily opened if closed", or closed it open. Any attempt to draw theqvhip out from its position in the U shaped member will bring the butt end of the same toward the U-shaped member, thus raising the hook to a position higher than the lower edge of the seat support Wlrichwill obviously preclude opening oi the door until the hook is permitted to dropto a lower positionas above stated.

The invention having been described, What is claimed as new and useful is:

1. The combination with abuggy body having a seat supporting meansv disposed substantially intermediate its length, of a cover member'hingedly attached to the seat supporting means and swinging down to a position of a closure for that part oi the body behind said means, a hingedly mounted door carried'in the body and movable to a position of closure for that portion ofthe body which t'hecover member closes, a flexiblemember connected with said cover memher, and a locking means for said door, the flexiblemember being engageable with said locking means. y

The combination with a bugg body having a seat supporting means disposed substantially intermediate its length, of a cover member hingedly attached to the seat supporting means and swinging down to a position of closure for that part of the body behind said means, a hingedly mounted door carried in the body and movable to a position of closure for that portion of the body which the cover member closes, a flexible member having one end attached to said cover member substantially at an intermediate point adjacent that edge opposite the hinged edge, pulleys carried by the said body over which said flexible member is trained, a locking device for said door, the flexible member passing through an opening of said door and being engageable with said locking means, and other flexible members each having one end attached to the cover member adjacent a corner opposite the hinged edge and the other end connected with the first said flexible member.
