UNITED STATES PATENT-OFFICE rwnsmennn rnmnme Mme Ann racirmn Application filed October 31, 1931. iderial No. 572,292. This invention relates to nipples and in erably constructed of relatively soft rubber particular to the type employed in connecand, aslbefore noted, provided with theperfo tion with a babys feeding bottle. ratlons or openings 7 through whichthe in A particular object of my invention is to fant may receive the contents of the bottle S provide a feeding nipple in which is formed indicated in outline and tothe upper beaded a solid wall portion for the purpose of proedge 9 of which is secured thenipple 5. f viding a teething member, the nipple belng This bulb end 6 is relatiVely smaller in also usable as a pacifier and being arranged diameter than theicentral' portionofthe nipfor use separately from the bottle. ple which is of substantially spherical shape 10 A still further object of my invention Is to as at 10 and is constructed of hard rubber provide a feeding nipple in connection with moulded to provide the inner reservoir "11, a
V which a plugmay be employed when the nipwallf 12 of whichis tapered down to termiple is used as a pacifier, the plug member 136- nate in a plug bore 13. This plug bore 13 ing arranged to cut the passage of air disposed in the median line of the nipple sucking by the infant and its consequent 14c,-the Walls 15 of which are tapered toproresults. vide for easy flow of the liquid from the V A still further object of my invention is to bottle into the bore 13. 1 T i provide a nursing nipple which will give a The lower constricted end 16 ofthe nipple free feed of milk or other fluid therethrough is beaded as at 17 so that the lower edge 18 l and which will retain its shape, may be sethereof may be snapped over thebeaded top curely attached to the upper end of afeed edge 9 of the bottle 8' t'osecurely hold the bottle and may be used as a feeder, a teether nipple in place'thereon. The lower end 16 and apacifier. of; the nipple is further provided'with a Changes and variations may be made in the slightly shouldered portion 19 which adapts construction shown and described without the nipple to proper fitting over the ends of departing from the principles of the invenbottles having various shaped beads thereon. tion or sacrificing its chief advantages; hence Wh n th ni l i u d on th nd of a such invention is not to be confin d t he bottle, the milk has a free flow through the ing, in which, out through the perforations 7 of the bulb Figure 1 is a view in sectional elevation of d 6, th b lb d 6 b i g oft, hil th a feeding nipple constructed n accordance solid portion 10 acts as a teething member W y invention, the use of it bottle t and while it is formed of relatively hard plug being illustrated in connection therebb 111 t ll nor Close th recepwith in outllne. tacle 11 under the chewing action to which it Figure 2 is a section taken on the hne 22 is subjected. a of Flgure 1 ShOWiIIg the pp chamber P When the nipple is to be used as a pacifier, tion of the nipple. a plug is employed consisting of a plug rod 40 Figure 3 is a sectlon ak n 11 h 11 20, having a disk 21 secured thereto intermeof Figure 1 showing the central bore aI' diate its ends, one end 22 of the plug being ranged to receive the stopper plug, and arranged for insertion into the bore 13 until Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a stopthe disk 21closes the lower open end of the ,per plug that may be employed in connection nipple by engaging in the beaded portion 17 45, with the nipple when the same is to be used thereof, to prevent passage of air through "9 5 as a paclfier. the nipple. The plug 22 is large enough to Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 indibe forced into the bore 13 so that it is friccates anipple constructed in accordance with tionally held in position and the lower demy lnvention and moulded to provide an uppending end thereof serves as a handle when per, perforated bulb-shaped feed end 6, prefthe nipple is employed as a pacifying device.
The plug 22 prevents passage of air into the receptacle 11 and thus prevents wind sucking by the infant through the perforations 7 in the bulb end of the nipple. The plug 20 is further provided with anopening 23 in the lower end thereof through which may be threaded, if desired, a cord, or other device, to assist the child in holdingthe combinaftiion plug and nipple which serves as a pacim It is evident, therefore, that I have provided a feeding nipple having a portion thereof made of soft rubber and a portion made of hard rubber to provide a soft feed end and a hard teething portion, a plug being provided upon which the nipple may be mounted for use as a pacifier, the plug serving to cut off the passage of air through the nipple.
My invention is not to be restricted to the precise details of construction shown since various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing the ad- 5 vantages derived from its use.
i What I claim is L V A rubber feeding nipple comprising a relatively soft, perforated feeding end, a flanged bottle attaching end,a lower conical 3Q chamber terminating in a passage adapted to receive a stopper plug, the material of the nipple between said feed end and said at? taching end being substantially spherical and a relatively long, conical chamber in said spherical part terminating at one end in said plug passage and at'the opposite end at the feeding end of the nipple.
In testimorg whereof I affix my signature.
