ALBERT H. TA'IUM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WHITALL TA'EUM COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N, Y.,' A CORPORATION OFNEW JERSEY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. TATUM, a
' citizen of the United b'tates, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nursing-Nipples, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved form of nipple to be used on a nursthan any other nipple which has been heretofore made. My nipple is so formed that the ball and elongated or teat shaped protuberance conform almost exactly to the anatomical formation of the hard and soft palate of. the infant. 'When using a nipple constructed in accordance with my invention, the infant when first taking the nipple into its mouth does not bite on the bulb itself and thus shut ofl the flow of milk from the bottle causing the nipple to collapse, which is the great difliculty experienced in using the nipples which have been heretofore made, but the infant bites the teat shaped protuberance first and thus does not shut off the flow of liquid but allows a more even flow of liquid than can be attained by using any of the shapes which are now made. I also provide against the collapsing of the bulb by reinforcing the lower half of the bulb making it of heavierrubber than th front part of the bulb is made of. i
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my device. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a'modification showing the lower part reinforced.
The device consists of a rubber nipple having a base (1 adapted to fit over the sides of the neck of a bottle not shown. The neck a is tapering in form being less in diameter at the point d than it is at the mouth of the nipple. The nipple is then enlarged being spherical in form and having a bulb e, the diameter of which is greater than the neck (1. and nearly of the same diameter as the base of the nipple. The bulb e gradually tapers and merges into a distinct tip f, the chamber inclosed by the bulb and tip having a Specification of Letters 1atent.

throat which gradually narrows as the bulb merges into the tip, there being no constriction of the throat between the bulb and tip such as would make the tip itself a distinct bulb as is clearly shown in the drawing where the tip is shown as of much less diameter than the neck d and about the size of the nipple of the human breast. At or near the end'of the tip-*or protuberance f is one or more openings 9 for the milk to pass through. Whenthe nipple is inserted in the mouth of an infant the infants mouth closes on theprotuberance f and does not press the bulb e to any extent and the neck 0 of the nipple always remains open and a continual flow of milk is assured.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the
connecting the base with the bulb, the bulb gradually tapering into a tip formation, said tip gradually tapering from the line of its juncture with the bulb to its end the free and unobstructed chamber inclosed by said bulb and tip having a throat which adually narrows as the bulb merges into t e tip, substantially as described.
2. A nipple comprising a base adapted to fit over the neck of a bottle, a bulb. a neck connecting the base with the bulb, the bulb gradually tapering into a tip formation, saidtip gradually tapering from the line of its juncture with the bulb to its end, the free and unobstructed chamber inclosed by said bulb and tip having a throat which graduallv narrows as the bulb merges into the tip, the lower part of the bulb being thickened, substantially as described.
. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set mv hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses."
ALBERT H. TATUM.
