Upright connecting rods or pitmen 22 located on opposite sides of the machine are connected with the knife and with crank arms 24 fixed to the opposite ends of the crank shaft 7 and rotative with said shaft. (See Figs. 1 and 2,) l
In constructing a safety tripping mechanism in accordance with this invention, and equipping a cutting or trimming machine therewith, a suitable clutch 200 is provided and operatively connected, by preference, with the crank shaft 7, for ope-rating the knife, and with the gear mechanism by means of which the crank shaft is connected with the motor or source of power.
The clutch may be of any ordinary and well-known or suitable form, but is by preference of substantially the same 'form and construction as that shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 of the original application, Serial No. 273,- 967 of which this is a divisional application and comprises an outer clutch member 201, an inner clutch member 202, and an intermediate clutch member or roller cage 203 which is interposed between said inner and outer clutch members and serves to hold the usual series of rollers 204 in spaced apart relation in the annular race-way 204 formed by said hollowed out annular' outer clutch member, said rollers being mounted in position to engage and cause the inner and outer clutch members to be held in fixed relation to each other when the clutch is engaged., and to release and permit the outer clutch member and the gear'9 to rotate freely while the crank shaft 7 is held stationary, when the clutch is disengaged. The inner clutch member 202 and intermediate clutch member or roller-engaging and releasing cage 203 are yieldingly connected in the usual manner by means of the usual compression spring interposed between spring-pressed shoulders 101 and 102 on said inner and intermediate clutch members respectively. As such clutches are well-known and in common use it is believed to be iinnecessary to further describe or illustrate the same in detail herein.
The outer clutch member 201 is iiXed to the gear wheel 9 which is' free to rotate relatively to the driving crank shaft 7 when the clutch is disengaged and the crank-shaft is stationary. The inner Vclutch member 202 is fiXed to said crank shaft 7 and provided with an outwardly projecting tripping finger or detent 205, which is adapted to be engaged outside of the adjacent side margin of the "5- front door 207 which is hinged to one of the upright side frame members 2 and located in front of the knife-enclosing casing or housing, forenclosing the knife and clamp mechanism within the space between the up- "i right'side frames 2, 2 and the front door 207 and back door 208. (See Fig. 5).
A clutch-operating hand lever or trip-ping lever 209 is attached to and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane upon the vertical axis formed by said upright clutch-operating shaft or rod 206. Said operating lever is located by preference above the front feed table 3, and is adapted to normally extend horizontally in front of the knife enclosing housing 4 and in front of the closed front door 207 on said housing. T he said lever is by preference hinged to the upright rod by means of a hinge member or head 210 fixed to said rod and having hinged engagement with the lever 209 which is connected with the said hinge member by a transversev horizontal hinge pin 103, whereby the lever is permitted to swing from its normal liorizontal lowered operative position in front of the knife-enclosing door, to upright raised position adjacent to the upright rod 20G and at one side of the door, to permit the door to be opened when required. The upright clutchoperating rod 206 is operatively connected with the clutch mechanism on the crank shaft 7, by suitable means which is by preference constructed as follows:
A clutch-operating or tripping and releasing pawl 211 is pivotally mounted on a supporting stub sh aft or pin 212 mounted on or fixed to the side frame 213, or other suitable strong and rigid support. Said pawl is located in position to engage and stop and release the tripping finger or detent 205 on the clutch 200 above described. rlflie pawl is provided with means for yieldingly holding` it in clutch-releasing position, said means consisting of a compression spring 214- mounted on a supporting rod 215, one end of which is supported by a bracket or supporting clip 216 attached to the side frame 213 or other suitable support by securing screws or bolts 101i: and provided with an end opening or recess 105 therein into which the end of the rod extends. The opposite end of the spring-supporting rod 215 extends loosely into a socket or recess 218 in the pawl and is provided with a` loose collar 219 between the end of the spring and said pawl. A coliar 217 encircles the end of the `spring-,sup-
porting rod near the recessed end of the said e prises a `headed spring-pressed bolt `222 mounted in a recess in the shoulder 221 of the pawl 211 between flanges or side plates` 223. Said bolt 222 is flexibly or pivotally supported upon said pawl and inposition to extend between the shoulders on the clutch andpawl respectively, by means of a pivot `pin 224 anchored in the said flanges or spaced plates 223 on said pawl and extending through a suitable opening in the rod orbar 222. A compression spring 225 is seated in a recess inthe pawl and in engagement withv a recessed portion of said headed boltor bar 222. Manually operable means is provided-for actuating the clutch-releasing and stopping pawl 211, one form of which is shown in Figs. l to 5 inclusive, and another form of which is shown in Figs. 6 and.;

Said stop arms 243 are provided with setscrews 244 in threaded engagement with and adjusted relatively to said stop arms, and adapted to alternately engage the adjacentside frame 213, for stopping and limiting the turning movements of the upright clutch-operating shaft 206 and the clutch-actuating hand lever 209 as the latter is operated to set or release the clutch. Saidstop arms also serve to prevent injury to the clutch-operating mechanism.
`Safety locking mechanism is provided for holdingthe upright clutch-operating shaft 206 and operating lever 209 and the clutchactuating mechanism connected therewith, in normal n clutch-releasing position, or in position to prevent the accidental or inadvertent operation of the knife or other parts of the machine, or the premature or accidental connection of the driving mechanism with the source of power and especially when either of the doors 207 `and 208 are open,.or when the machine is not in all respects in condition for operation with safety to the machine and to the operator, and for releasing and permitting the operation ofsaid lever 209 when the doors 207 and S are closed and not otherwise;
ot pin or bolt 248 anchored in the top of the machine frame and comprises a lever arm 249 located adjacent to and adapted to be moved into and out of locking engagemr-int with the notched and shouldered end of the locking crank arm or lever 245. The other arm 250 of said bell crank is operatively connected with a pair of telescoping springpressed bolts or plungers 251, 252, one of which is tubular or hollowed out and the other of which has a reduced stem portion 253 mounted within and in telescoping sliding engagement with the tubular member 251. A compression spring 254 is seated in the tubular member 251 and in engagement with the inner end of the inner telescoping member 252, and tends to press said telescoping members apart endwise. The outer ends of the telescoping-spring-pressed plungers are thus pressed outward beyond the outer door-engaging faces of the upper frame portion 255 when the doors are open, and are in position to be pressed inward by the inner faces of the doors to retracted position when the doors are closed.
A pair of bell cranks 256 mounted upon and kadapted to oscillate upon the vertical axes formed by upright supporting bolts or pivots 25,7, 257, anchored in the top frame portion 258 of the machine,each have one lever arm 259 connected with and adapted to be operated by the adjacent one of said telescoping spring-pressed plungers 251, 252. Said lever arms 259 are flexibly connected by means of a tension spring 260 which tends to draw them together and also tends to draw the plungers 251 and 252 inward against the tension of the spring 254, but Without overcomino' the tension of the latter spring which is stronger than the spring 260. The other lever arms 261, 261 of said bell cranks are each connected with the arm 250 of the bell crank 247 by means of a connecting link or plunger 262, one end ofwhich is connected with the bell crank 247, by a pivot pin or bolt 263, and the other end of which is connected with both of Ysaid arms 261 by pins 264 which are anchored in the link or plunger 262 and extend into end notches or recesses 265 in the lever arms 261 respectively. The lever arm 249 of the bell crank 247 is therefore movable automatically into locking engagement with the lever 245 fixed to the upright clutch-actuating shaft 206 so as to lock the said shaft against rotation or operation when one or both of the doorsl 207 and 208 are open. The closing of both of said doors will operate and lock the said-lever 247 out of locking engagement with saidr lever 245 and release the latter and the manually operable clutch-actuating and releasing shaft 206 and hand' lever 209, which may then be operated to set or release the power clutch i as idesired.
In the form of clutch-actuating and releasing safety mechanism shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the means for operatively connecting the clutch-engaging and releasing pawl 211 with the manually operable vertical rockshaft 206 and hand lever 209 comprises a horizontal reciprocating plunger 106 which is employed inlieu of the plunger 226 already described and best shown in Fig. `1. The said plunger 106 is slidably mounted at one' end upon a supporting stud 107 which is anchored in and projects inward from the inner face of a supporting boss 108 which forms an integral part of the machine frame 213. Said stud extends through an elongated slot 109 in said plunger for permitting the required movement of the latter endwise. The said plunger 106 is provided with a bottom notch or recess 110 and a bottom shoulder 111 which corresponds with the shoulder 227 on the plunger 226 already described and is adapted to engage and alternately lock and release the projecting pin or shoulder 228l on the arm 229 of the pawl 211 already described. Y
An upright plunger-supporting and actuating bar 112 is pivotally mounted at its lower end upon an oscillating horizontal lever 113 by means of a connecting pivot pin 114 which extends through suitable openings in the overlapping ends of said connected parts. The upper end of said upright bar 112 is pivotally connected with the plunger 106 by a horizontal connecting pivot pin 115.
Said oscillating lever 113 which supports l the upright bar 112 is pivotally supported upon the machine frame by a stationary stud or bolt 116 anchored in the machine frame and extending through a suitable opening in said lever. The forwardly projecting lever arm 117 of said lever 113 extends under the power-clutch 200 and into the path of movement of a peripheral tripping shoulder 118 which projects outward from and may be formed integrally with the peripheral poril tion o f bthe Vinner clutch member or cam 202 in position to engage the lever arm 117 and automatically actuate said 'lever 113 and upright bar 112 and thereby raise the recipro- Y eating locking and releasing plunger106 with its hook or shoulder 111 out of engagement with the stud 228 on said pawl 211, thus permitting the. released pawl to be returned to its initial normal position in the path of movement of the peripheral shoulders 118 and 205 on the inner clutch member or cam 202 and intermediate clutch member or roller cage 203 to release the clutch and thereby release the driving shaft 7 from the -a continuously rotative gear wheel 9 to which the outer clutch member 201`is fixed, thus effecting the automatic release of the connection between said gear and the intermittently rotative crank shaft 7 and knife and clamprevolution of the clutch 200. l

1 The restricted passage 144 is adapted to permit and resist the flow of oil from the reservoir or supply chamber 145 into andiout of the annular bore 141 in the plunger 139. The oil thus forced into and out of said axial boreand the space between the plunger and the bottom of the socket or bore in which the plunger is mounted serves to permit and yieldingly resist the invvard movement of the plunger when it is engaged by the stop shoulder on the power clutch 202 thus affording a simple and efficient shock absorber for minimizing the shocks caused by the stopping of the rotation of the shouldered clutch members as the rotation of the clutch is stopped by the pavvl and plunger. A transverse plunger retaining pin 150 is anchored at its opposite ends in a transverse opening in the pavvl 211 and seated in and in sliding engagement With a shouldered peripheral notch in the plunger for holding the plunger in place and permitting and limiting the longitudinal movements of the plunger.
IVe claim:
1. In a cutting machine having a movable knife, the combination of knife-operating means comprising gear and clutch mechanism adapted for operative connection With the knife, means for enclosing and shielding the Vknife and knife-operating mechanism, said shielding means comprising a movable closure member, tripping mech-anism operatively connected With the clutch mechanism, and locking means operatively connected with said tripping mechanism and adapted to be engaged and released by the action of said movable closure member, for locking the tripping mechanism against rotation When the shielding means is unclosed.
2. In a cutting machine having a movable knife, the combination of knife-operating means comprising gear and clutch mechanism adapted to be voperatively connected with the knife, means for enclosing vand shielding the knife and knife-operating means, tripping mechanism operatively connected with the clutchV mechanism and comprising a rock shaft located adjacent to said enclosing and shielding means, and lockingl means associated With and adapted to be operated by said shielding means and operatively connected With said rock shaft, for locking the tripping mechanism against operation when the shielding means is unclosed.
3. In a cutting machine having a movable knife, the combination of knife operating means comprising gear and clutch mechanism adapted for operative connection With the knife, tripping mechanism operatively connected with the clutch mechanism, said tripping mechanism comprising a pawl mount-ed adjacent to and movable into and out of engagement with the clutch mechaism, reciprocatory plunger mechanism operatively connected With said pavvl, a rock shaft provided With a crank arm adapted for operative engagement With said Vplunger for moving the same in one direction to release the clutch mechanism, means for operating the plunger in an opposite direction to stop the clutch mechanism, and means for operati-ng the rock shaft.
Ina cutting machine having a movable knife, the combination of knife-operating means comprising gear and clutch mechanism adapted for operative connection With the knife, means for enclosing and shielding the knife and knife-operating means, tripping mechanism operatively connected With the clutch mechanism and comprising a rock shaft located adjacent to said enclosing and shielding means, an operating lever connected With said rock shaft, a pawl movable into and out of engagement With the clutch mechanism, paWl operating means connected with said paWl and operatively connected With and adaptedy for operation by said rock sha-ft for releasing the clutch mechanism, and locking means associated with and adapted for operation by said shielding means for locking the tripping mechanism.

In a cutting machine including a movable knife, the combinationrof knife-operating means comprising gear and clutch mechanism adapted for operative connection with the knife, a paWl mounted adjacent to and movable into and out of engagement with the clutch mechanism for tripping and stopping the'same, reciprocatory plunger mechanism operatively connected With said pavvl, tripping lever mechanism adapted. to engage and operate said plunger mechanism in one direction to release the clutch mechanism, and means for operating said plunger mechanism in an opposite direction to permit the pawl to engage and stop the clutch mechanism.

In a cutting mechanism including a movable knife, the combination of knife-operating means comprising driving gear and clutch mechanism adapted for operative connection With the knife, means movable into and out of position for enclosing and shielding the knife and knife-operating means, tripping mechanism comprising a pawl adapted to engage and release the clutch mechanism, tripping lever and plunger mechanism operatively connected With said paw] for operating the same to release the clutch mechanism, locking lever mechanism movable into and out of locking engagement with said tripping lever mechanism, and means associated With and adapted for operation by said shielding means and connected With said locking lever mechanism, for operating the same, to lock the tripping lever mechanism to lock the tripping mechanism in clutch releasing position when the shielding means is out of shielding position.

In a device of the character decribed including a knife, means for operating the knife Ofi and a frame enclosing the knife including a movable door, means operable by the door to lock said knife-operating means out of func-` tional position including a spring-pressed bolt carried by the frame and normally restrained by the door, a bell crank lever operably connected with the plunger, a second bell crank lever connected with the first bell crank lever, and a link connecting said levers for moving the last named leverinto position for preventing operation of the kn1feoperat y ing means upon release of the plunger.

In a device of the character described i including a knife, means for operating the knife, a housing enclosing the knife having oppositely arranged doors movable into and out of position to expose the knife, means operable by the doors to lock said knife-oper i ating means out of functional position includy ing oppositely arranged plungers carried by tlie housing and engageable with the doors, a spring for urging the plungers against the doors, oppositely arranged bell cranks operably engaging the plungers, a third bell crank pivotally supported in the housing, a y
link connecting the first named bellcranks with the third named bell crank for moving the last named bell crank into position for preventing actuation of the knife-operatf' ing means When one of the doors is in open position.
