IMPROVEMENT IN MONUMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,290, dated May 29, 1877; application filed March 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER SMITH, of Palmyra, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monumental Head- Stones; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specifioation; in which- Figure l is a front. sectional elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same.
This invention consists in the employment of a metallic anchorage or sub-base plate, to be buried some distance below the surface, for the purpose of sustaining the head-stone permanently in an upright position.
The connecting-standard G and sub-base plate B may be formed in one piece, as shown; or they may be made separately, and connected together by means similar to the connection between the standard and base B. This standard, in cross-section, is in the form of a Greek cross, as shown.
The upper end of the standard is formed with a recess in two opposite wings of the cross, to receive the ribs d, formed on the under side of base B, each side of the transverse wings, as shown in Fig.1.
The standard may be made two feet, more or less, in length, and in size in proportion to the size and weight of the head-stone.
The openings through the wings of the standard and the ribs d are formed sothat the keys at, which are somewhat tapered, shall, when inserted, draw the parts firmly and solidly together.
The vertical slab or section A, upon which the tablet-plates t are placed, is provided with a lug, b, projecting down from the bottom, near each side, which fit through mortises formed in the base B for their reception. The lugs are formed with openings, through which the keys 0 are driven, which securely locks sections A and B together.
The letter-plates or tablets might be molded upon the slab or section A, either in raised or sunken panels; or they might be formed upon separate plates, and attached by screws or otherwise.
Two or more standards, 0, might be employed either on the same or separate anchor or sub-base plates B. This would probably be desirable for the larger-sized monuments.
Any desired form or style of monument may be employed in the formation of sections A and B.
What I claim as my invention is A subbase plate, B, for monumental headstones, provided with one or more vertical standards, 0, adapted to be detachable secured to the base B by a key or keys, a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
