The web is carried forwardly from the guide roller above the writing table 13 to the feed rollers. These rollers may be actuated in any suitable manner. As here shown, they are connected one to the other for rotation in unison by means of a gear 21' on the roller 15 and a gear 22 on the roller 14. The gear 22 meshes with a large gear 23 rotatably mounted on a stud shaft 24 journaled in the side wall of the housing. Rigidly secured to the outer end of this stud shaft is an operating handle 25 and rigidly secured to the stud 24 within the housing is a pawl carrier 26, here shown as a segmental plate, on which is supported a spring actuated pawl 27 which engages with a ratchet wheel 28 loosely mounted on the stud and rigidly connected with the gear 23. The operating handle is supported in its normal position by a stop 29 and is moved rearwardly to impart movement to the feeding rollers through the pawl and ratchet mechanism. The gear ratio is preferably such that a single movement of the operating handle will advance the web a distance equal to the length of the longest form which the machine is capable of handling.
\Vhen the web has been advanced the desired distance it is released from the feeding mechanism, accurately positioned with relation to the edge 18 and then again engaged by the feeding mechanism which then serves to clamp the same against movement. These operations may be effected in various ways but, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the tapered member 17, which serve to separate the feeding rollers and release the web, are tapered rearwardly and they are connected at their rear ends by a transverse bar or plate 30 to one end of which is secured a bar 31 which is slidably mounted in guides 32 on'the adjacent side wall of the housing to hold the bar 30 against twisting movement and to cause the tapered members to move in unison. The tapered members are normally supported in a re tracted position in which they will not interfere with the operative engagement of the upper roller with the web. Connected with the plate 30 is a rearwardly extending arm 33 which is pivotally connected at its rear end with an arm 34 rotatably mounted on the stud shaft 24. The arm 34 is normally stationary but means are provided forimparting rearward movement thereto when the web hasbeen advanced the desired d1stance,thereby releasing the web from the feeding members. For this purpose I have provided the pawl carrying plate 26 with a stop, such as a pin 36, arranged to engage the edge of the arm 34 and cause the same to move with the shaftaudthus draw the tapered members between the rollers. The movement imparted to the web by the feeding mechanism preferably advances the same a distance slightly in excess of that required to properly position the form with relation to the severing edge 18. The guide roller 19 is spaced from the cutting edge such a distance that a crease be tween adjacent web sections will be in contact with the guide roller at the time that the web is released by the feeding members and the web will tend to move or spring rearwardly, due to the resiliency of the paper and the position of the crease withrelation to the guide roller, as shown in Fig. 6. It will be noted that the roller 20 supports the lower portion of the web substantially parallel with the upper portion thereof, thus causing the web to bend sharply about the guide 19 and placing the'same under such tension that the resiliency of the web will cause the creased portion thereof to spring rearwardly. This rearward movement is checked by a suitable stop, such as a plate 37 arranged in the rear of the guide roller. This step plate is spaced from the cutting edge a distance'exactly equal to'the length of one form or of a plurality of shorter forms and when a crease in the web is in engagement wi'l h the stop plate a preceding crease will be properly positioned with relation to the severing edge 18. This positioning of the web takes place instantly upon the releasing of the webs from the feeding members and upon the return of the actuating handle to its normal or initial position a stop or pin 38 on the pawl arm 26 will engage the rear edge of the arm 34 and move the tapered members forwardly so as to permit the upper roller to again engage the web and thus clamp the same against movement. The rearward movement which is imparted to the creased portion of the web as it passes about the guide serves to maintain the plurality of webs with their forms in alinement, this being due to the forcing of the crease in each lower web into the crease in an upper web. The distance which the web is advanced upon each operation of the feeding mechanism may be varied by adjusting the stop 36 with relation to the plate 26, the latter being provided with a'series of holes 39 in any one of which the stop 36 may be inserted. Means are preferably provided whereby the rollers 19 and 20 and the stop plate 37 may be adjusted with relation to the supportingstructure or housing to correspond to the adjusted position of the stop 36 and for this purpose the housing is provided with a plurality of bearing openings 40 and slots 41 to support the rollers and plate in adjusted positions.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I have illustrated a modifiedform of the register in which the releasing of the web by the feeding members is controlled the crease in the web. As here shown, the feeding rollers and their operating mechanism are similar to those above described but the tapered members'42. which separate the feeding rollers, are tapered for V wa-rdly and the plate 43 to which those tapbers into operative engagement with said rollers when a predetermined movement has been imparted to said operating handle and the other of said stops will engage said arm and retract said tapered members when said operating handle is moved in the other direction, a guide for said web so arranged that a crease between adjacent sections of said web will be in engagement therewith when said rollers are separated, thereby permitting said web to move rearwardly, and means for limiting the rearward movement of said web.

In an autographic register comprising i structure adapted to support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, feeding members to engage said web, an operating device having movement in two directions, means controlled by the movement of the operating device'in one direction to impart feeding movement to the feeding members, means to release said web from said feeding members at the end of said feeding movement, and means controlled by the movement of said operating device in the other direction to cause said feeding members to engage said web. v 5. In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted to support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, feeding members to engage said web, means arrangedbeyond said feeding members for severing said web, an operating device having movement in two directions, means controlled by the movement of said operating device in onedirection to inrpart feeding movement to said feeding members, means to release said web from said feeding members at the end of said feeding movement and to position said web with relation to said severing means, and means con trolled by the movement of said operating device in the other direction to cause said feeding members to again engage said web.

In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted to support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, feeding rollers to engage said web, means to separate said feeding rollcrs to release said web, an operating device, means comprising a one-way clutch to connect said operating device with said feeding rollers when said operating device is moved in one direction, means for actuating said :eparating means, and means controlled by the movement of said operating device in theother direction to retract said separating means.

In. an autographicregister comprising a structure adapted to'support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, feeding members to engage said web, an operating device having movement in two directions, means controlled by the movement of the operating device in one direction to impart feeding movement to the feeding members, means controlled by a crease between adjacent sections of said web for releasing said web from said feeding members at the end of said feeding movement, and means controlled by the movement of said operating device in the other direction to cause said feeding members to again engage said web. 7

In an autographic register comprising astructure adapted to support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, feeding rollers to engage said web, means to separate said feeding rollers to release said web, an operating device, means comprising a one-way clutch to connect said operating device with said feeding rollers when said operating device is moved in one direction, means controlled by a crease betweenadjacent sections of said web to cause said separating means to release said web, and means controlled by the movement of said operating device in the other direction to retract said separating means 9. In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted to support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, feeding members to engage said web, an operating device having movement in'two directions, means controlled by the movement of said operating device in one direction to impart feeding movement to said feeding members, a guide so arranged that a creased portion of said web will project to the rear thereof as said web passes about the same, means actuated by said projecting portion of said web for causing said web to be released by said feeding members, and means controlled by the movement of said operating device in the other direction to cause said feeding mem bers to engage said web.

In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted to support a web of paper folded into superimposed sections of equal length, feeding rollers to engage said web, tapered members arranged to be engaged by parts of said rollers and moved between the same to separate said rollers and release said Web, an operating device having movement in one direction to impart feeding movement to said feeding members, a guide so arranged that a creased portion of said web will project to the rear thereof as saidweb passes about the same, a movable member. arranged to be engaged and actuated by the projecting portion of said web, means for connecting said movable member with said tapered members to cause the latter to be moved into frictional engagement with said rollers, and means actuated by said operating device to retract said tapered members. 11. In an autographic register comprising,
portion of said web will project to the rear of said guide as said web passes about the same, a movable device operatively connect ed with said releasing means and having a part so arranged with relation tosaid guide that it will be engaged by the projecting portion of said web and cause said releasing means to be actuated and will control the position of said web after it has been released.

In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted to support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, feeding rollers to engage said web, a severing device arranged beyond said feeding rollers, an operating device, means including a one-way clutch to connect said operating device with said feeding rollers when said operating device is moved in one directon, means for separating said feeding rollers to release said web, means controlled by a crease between adjacent sections of said web to position the same with relation to said severing means when said web has been released by said rollers, and means controlled by the movement of said operating device to retract said separating means and cause said rollers to again engage said web.

In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted to support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, a writing table, means to feed said web over said writing table and successively discharge the web sections from the register, means to actuate said feeding means, a web severing device arranged beyond said feeding means, means controlled by said actuating device to release said web from said feeding means, a guide for said web held against bodily, movement lengthwise of said web and so arranged that a crease between adjacent sections of said web will be in engagement with said guide at the end of each feeding operation and that said web will move rearwardly with relation said guide, a writing table over which said web moves, said guide being held against bodily movement lengthwise of said web and so arranged that the resiliency of said web "will cause the creased portion thereof to move rearwardly with relation to said Writing table and said guide when the web has been released, and means cooperating with said creased portion to determine the fina position of said web.
15; In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted tosupport a web of paper which is folded into superimposed sectionsof equal length, a writing table over which said web moves a guide about which said web extends, feeding members, a web severing device arranged beyond said feeding members, means for actuating said feeding members to move said weba predetermined distance, to move one of said feeding members to an inoperative position to release said web and to then causesaid' feeding inemher; to be restored to its operative position, said guide beingheld against bodily movement lengthwise of said web and so arranged that at the end of each feeding operation a crease between adjacent portions of said web will be in engagement with said guide and the resiliency of said web will move the same rearwardly with relation to said writ ing table and said guide when. it has been released from said feeding members, and means cooperating with said creased portion to limit the resilient movement thereof and for said web held against bodily movementlengthwise of said web and so arranged that i at the end of said feeding movement a crease in said web Wlll be in contact with said guide,
means for releasing said web from said feeding rollers at the end of said feeding move ment, means for'so supporting said web with relation tosaid guidethat the resiliency of said web will cause the same to move rearwardly with relation to said writing table and said guide when it has been released by said feeding rollers, means to limit the rean ward movement of said web, and means for causing said feeding rollers to again grip said web. a a

In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted to support aweb of paper which is folded into superimposed sections of equal length, a writing tableover which said web moves feeding rollers to advance said web, operating} mechanism including a handle, and means for causing the movement of said handle in one direction to first actuate said rollers to advance the web a predetermined distance and to then move one of said rollers to an inoperative position, a guide for said web so arranged that at the end of said feeding movement a crease in said web will be in engagement with said guide, means for so supporting said web with relation to said guide that the resiliency of said web will move the same rearwardly with relation to said writing table when it is released by said rollers, means to limit the rearward movement of said web, and means actuated by the movement of said operating handle in a reverse direction to restore said feeding roller to its operative position.

In an apparatus of the character described, comprising a structure adapted to support a plurality of superimposed webs of paper which are folded in sections of. equal length, and a writing table over which the several sections of said superimposed webs are successively moved, means for advancing said webs a predetermined distance and then releasing the same, a guide mounted at the rear of said writing table and about which said superimposed webs pass, said guidebeing held against bodily movement lengthwise of said web and so arranged and of such a character that creased portions of said web will be supported thereby when said webs are released and the resiliency of said Webs will move the same rearwardly with relation to said writing table and said guide and cause the creases in the inner webs to enter the creases 111 the outer webs and thereby mamtain said Webs in almement.

In an apparatus of the character de- I scribed, comprising a structure adapted to support a plurality of superimposed webs of paper which are folded in sections of equal length, and a writing table over which the several sections of said superimposed webs are successively moved, means to advance said webs a predetermined distance and then release the same, a guide mounted to the rear of ,sald writing table, held against bodily movement lengthwise of said web and so arranged that creased portions of said webs will be supported thereby at theend of each advancing operation and said webs will move rearwardly with relation to said Writing table and said guide due to their resiliency when they have been released, and means arranged ad acent to said guide to cause said webs-to bend sharply about the same. 1

In an autographic register comprising a structure adapted to support a web of paper which is folded into superimposed'sections of equal length, a writing table over which said web moves, a guide about which said web eX- tends, feeding members acting on said web, operating mechanism to cause said'feeding members to advance said web a predet'er mined distance, to then move one of said members out of engagement with said web and to subsequently cause said feeding member to be restored to its operative position, said guide being held against bodily movement lengthwise of said web and so arranged that the resiliency of said web will cause the same to move rearwardly with relation to said writing table and said guide when said feeding roller is in its inoperative position, and a part spaced from said guide to control the resilient movement of said web.
