Description
May 30, 1933. E. B'. HUGHSON FUSE Filed April 29, 1931 ion/1N B. Hus/15am Y n'ron av v - A'rrolmiv cel Patented May 30, 1833 .umrsosnras PATENT OFFICE mm a. nelson, or no menu, mrw roax rusn This invention relates to fuses for electric circuits.
An object of the invention is the provision of a fuse comprising a plug and a fuse proper which is readi y rep aceable in the plug.
Another b]00t is the provision o a fuse structure in which the fuse proper is in such relation to the plug that it W111 be held in tight contact with a socket when the plug is inserted in the socket without employing fastening means such as screws or solder to fasten the fuse to the plug.
Other objects will be ap reciated by those skilled in the art upon rea ing the following specification.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application, with the understanding, however, vthat the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction-described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therefrom as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
n the drawing: Fig. 1 is a side view of the fuse. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of 1. ig. 8 is a be 111 plan view.
Fig. 4 is a top lan view; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the proper before being (placed in the plug.
Referring to the swing for a more detailed description thereof, numeral 7 indicates a plug which is preferably of insulating material such for example as glass or perain. The lug is provided with a recess 8 and has exterior threads 9 and a boss or protuberance 10 on the exterior of an end wall 11. The plug is provided with a transverse aperfuse 1881. lerlal' No. 588,771.
The fuse pro r is shown in Fig. 5 and is designated b t e numeral 15. The fuse 15 comprises a ody portion 16 havin notches 17 at its sides to provide a portion 0 reduced cross-sectional area. One end of the fuse has an enlarged round contact portion 18.
The fuse 15 is fplaced in the plug by pushing the end 19 o the fuse through the aperture or passageway 14 of the plug from the lower end thereof and then fitting the body portion to one or more of the threads 9 and passing the end 19 through the aperture 12 and bending it downwardly into contact with a boundary portion of the recess 8. The round contact portion 18 of the fuse may then be bent over onto the protuberance 10. That portion of the fuse which has a reduced crosssectional area by reason of the notches 17 lies in the aperture or passageway 14; so that when the fuse blows at this reduced portion 'rotection will be given by the bod of the p ug. No special fastenin means suc as screws or solder is needed to old the fuse in the plug since the ends thereof are held by the latter. It will be readily appreciated that when the plug is screwed lnto a socket that portion of the fuse which lies on the threads of the pin will be tightly held between the plug an the socket. It will also be readily seen that the fuse may be readily replaced on account of the fact that no auxiliary fastening means are employed. a e
What is claimed as new is:
A fuse plug comprising an exteriorl threaded body for insertion in a fuse bloc and having a boss at one end disposed in the center of the latter, and a fuse having a disk portion disposable against said boss, the body 2 mums hevinge recess therethrough entinelyploeed except adjacent said boss and et a. pomt intermediate the length of the threads, the fun extending through said recess to have a pot- 6 tion thereof lylng exteriorly egaine't nid threads, the body of the fuse ebove the t. where the letter leaves the recess formed with a rforetion in its well communiceting wit the interior of the body, 10 and the extremity of the fuse passing through this perforation.
In testimony whereof I hereby .5: my
signature. u EDWIN B. HUGHSON.
