H. A. AUSTIN PLUG FOR ELECTRIC LIGHT SOCKETS- Filed May 20, 1926 l/VVENTOR B) f/arr /7T /7/J///7 A TTORNE Y5 Patented Sept. 11,1928.
J UNITED STATES 7 1,684,166 PATENT. OFFICE.
HABBY A. AUSTIN, OF KALAMAZQO,
PLUG FOB ELECTRIC-LIGHT SOCKETS.
Application filed Kay 20, 1926. Serial No. 110,426. i
lateral coninvention is clearly illustrated in the acc0mpanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is an -elevation view of my improved plug in separated relation.
Fig.2 is a longitudinal central sectional view, the central pin and lateral contact finger being shown in full lines to show details of construction.
The parts will be identified by their numerals of reference which are the same in both views.
1 is the porcelain of the'screw plug. It contains a central bore 2 enlarged at 21 at its outer end. Within this central bore is the contact tube 3 which is expanded at 31 into engagement with the washer 32 at the inner'end of the plug. The inner end of the tube towards the outer end of the plug is slightly expanded at 33 to retain the same effectively in position and to facilitate the introduction of the central contact pin. .4
is the metallic outer screw covering of thecontact plug which is separated from the central tube by the insulation. 5 is the lateral contact spring which is convex at 51 at the contact point and riveted at 52 to the outer screw contact connection 4.
6 is the porcelain of the detachable part of the plug and it is provided with a central contact pin 7 which is slotted at 71 to make the same elastic for insertion into the contact tube 3. It is provided with a contact ing 61 for the introduction of the cord. The
lateral contact finger 8 is secured at 81 to the porcelain which provides connection for one partof the cord, the same being located in recess 63 in said porcelain 6. I have not shown the cord.
I have described the parts of the plug as made of porcelain. Of course, any suitable insulating material can be made use of. The structure can be considerably varied without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: e
1. In a separable plug, the combination of a screw portion of insulating material having a central metallic contact tube disposed in a central bore therein, a suitable contact means at its outer end and expanded into an enlargement at its inner end adapted to.
retain the said tube and to guide a contact pin, a lateral electric contact spring with convex portion disposed in a lateral recess and a screw contact covering connected thereto, a detachable portion of said plug composed of the insulation block 6, a central pilot contact pin secured in the same and provided with suitable electric connections, and a contact finger shorter than the pilot contact pin disposed in a suitable recess and positioned to enter and coact with the lateral spring contact of the said screw portion of said plug,
after the pilot pin has been inserted as specified.
2. In a separable plug, the combination of a screw portion of insulating material having a central metallic contact tube disposed in a central bore therein, a suitable contact means at its outer end, its inner end adapted to guide a contact pin, a lateral electric contact spring wit 1 convex portion disposed in a lateral recess and a screw contact covering connected thereto, a detachable portion of said plug composed of the insulation block 6, a central pilotcontact pin secured in the same and provided with suitable electric connections, and a contact finger shorter than the pilot contact pin disposed in a suitable recess and positioned to enter and coact with the lateral spring contact of the said screw portion of said plug'after the pilot pin has been inserted as specified.
3. In a separable plug, the combination of a screw portion of insulating material having a central metallic'contact tube disposed in a central bore therein, a suitable contact means at its outer end, its inner end adapted to guide a contact pin, a lateral electric contact disposed in a lateral recess and a screw contact covering connected thereto, a decontact of the said screw tachable portion of said plug composed of plug after the pilot pin has the insulation block 6, a central pilot contact specified.
pin secured in the same and provided with In witness whereof I have hereunto set my suitable electric connections, and a contact hand.
finger shorter than the pilot contact pin positioned to enter and" coact with the lateral HARRY A. AUSTIN.
