The object of my invention is to provide ameans for holding and storing a number of binding slips or bands which may be of different size, color, or marks, in a safe and dry place, and in an orderly fashion, and for conveniently delivering the binding slips in succession when it is desired to use the binding slips or bands. It has been found in the past that many of the slips or bands are lost or disfigured when they are kept loose, and their utility is spoiled, resulting in a great waste.
The particular object of my invention is to provide a series of compartments in which the slips are kept, and from which they are singly fed. A further object of my invention is to provide a binding slip or band which has a gummed curved or circular end portion and a moistening means for wetting the gummed portion on delivery of the slip preparatory to binding or wrapping a bundle or package.
Constructions containing the invention may be varied in their form and, to illus trate a practical application, I have selected a strip or band dispenser as an example of the various embodiments of my invention and shall describe it hereinafter. The dispenser selected is shown in the accompanying drawings.

The band dispenser shown in the drawings is supported on a base plate 1 having cushioned pads 2 on the under side of the base plate 1. The container 8 is formed of side walls 4 and 5, a rear plate 6, and an L-shaped cover plate 7. The rear plate 6 is connected at its ends to the sides 4 and 5 and at its bottom to the base plate 1. The L-shaped cover plate 7 may be provided with a handle, such as the handle 8. The front of the container is formed of two plates, the upper front plate 10 and the lower front plate 11. Both the upper front plate and the lower front plate are L-shaped in cross section. The outer ends of each of the upper front plate 10 and the lower front plate 11 are connected tov the walls 4 and 5, respectively. The lower front plate 11 is provided with a series of oblong openings 12 on its face 13.
The interior of the container is divided into compartments 15, 16, and 1?, respectively. Compartment 15 encloses the storing means, compartment 16 the dispensing means, and compartment 17 the moistening means. The compartment 15 is formed by the side walls 4 and 5, the L-shaped cover 7, the upper front plate 10, and, a delivery platform 21. The delivery platform may be formed of wood and supported on the side walls 1 and 5. The compartment 15 is divided along its longitudinal axis in a series of bins 18 by the walls 19, having rounded end portions 29, which conform to the dimensions and form of the binding slips 20, which are placed in the bins 18. The rounded end portion 29 of the walls 19 form an open slot 38 for moving the slips while they are in the bins 18. Each binding slip 20 has a rounded end or pronounced rounded corners 28, at one end, the end with the rounded corners having on its under side gummed portions. The rounded portions of the slips allow for binding readily by a sweep of the users finger. The walls 19 of the bins 18 may be formed of sheet metal and attached to the upper front plate 10 and to the delivery platform 21. The bins, being substantially the same form and size of the slips 20, keep the slips located in close proximity to the front of the bin for subsequent delivery.
The compartment 16 is formed by the base plate 1, the back plate 6, the lower part of the L-shaped cover 7, the delivery platform 21, and the lower front plate 11. The compartment 17 is formed of a plate 22 having a face 24 with a lip 23 on the upper edge of the face 24, a bottom portion 25, and a back portion 26, inclined toward the face portion 24, and end plates 27 sealed to the face portion, the bottom portion and the back portion of the plate 22. This forms a reservoir for the moistening element.
The dispensing mechanism consists of an axle 30, which extends across the container 3 and through the compartment 16 and rotatably supported in the walls 4 and 5, respectively, of the container 3 in a manner well known in the art. A numberof pulleys, such as the pulley 31, are disposed along the axle at positions which conform to the bottom of the bins 18 formed in the compartment 15. The pulley 31 is free to rotate on the axle 30. Immediately adjacent to the position of the pulley 31 on the axle is located a single tooth ratchet 32 which is keyed to the axle 30. The single tooth ratchet 32 has a single high point forming a toot-h A gear wheel 35 is keyed to the end of the axle 30 and has a hub 36 extending inwardly along the axle 30. The hub 36 has a cam surface having a single high point which extends abruptly along a radial line forming a tooth 39. A dog 37 rides on the surface of the hub 36 and is pivotally connected to a cam 40 by means of the screw 41. The cam 40 is located on the axle 30 and is free to rotate about the axle. In order to cause the dog 37 to maintain its position on the surface of the hub 36, a spring 42 may be connected to the cam 40 by means of the screw 43 and bent around a pin 44 to spring-press its end against the top of the dog 37.
The axle 30 is caused to move by means of a sector gear whose teeth 51 engage with the teeth of the gear wheel 35. The sector gear 50 pivots about the pin 52, which is secured in the side Wall 4 of the container 3. The sector gear 50 has an inwardly extending hub 54, which locates the periphery of the sector gear 50 in alignment with the periphery of the gear wheel 35. The sector gear 50 is retained on its pivotal axis about the pivot pin 52 by means of split pin 56 which extends through the pivot pin 52. An arm 58 having a plate 59 substantially the same shape and dimensions as the shape and dimensions of the sector gear 50 is attached to the sector gear 50 by means of the screws 61. The arm 58 may be provided with a handle, such as the handle 62.
An axle extends across the front of the compartment 16 at the point of juncture of the three compartments 15, 16, and 17. Disposed at intervals on the axle 65 and conforming to the size and location of the bottom of the bins 18 are rollers 66 which are free to rotate on the axle 65. A number of belts, such as the belt 67, are connected to the rollers 66 and the pulleys 31. The belts 67 may be formed of some cushion-like material, such as rubber. The belts 67 tend to grasp the banding slips due to the friction between the bands 20 and the soft rubberlike material of the belt 67.
There being a number of diiferently marked or shaped bands 20 stored in their respective bins 18, and it being desired to dispense one of a certain mark, or shape, I have provided that one belt may operate while the others do not. An L-shaped dog 70 is pivotally supported on each of the pulleys 31 by means of a screw 71 at a point medial to the center of the pulley and the periphery of the pulley. The L-shaped dog is so positioned that the leg 72 will ride the single tooth ratchet 32 and engage the tooth 33. A clutch member 73 is positioned so as to move the L-shaped dog 70 by pushing against the leg 74 of the L-shaped dog 70. The clutch member 73 has a plate 7 5 having an oblong slot 76. A shaft 78 is connected to one end of the plate and extends through the opening 12 in the lower face plate 11. A handle may be attached to the end of the shaft 78, such as the handle 80. A shaft 81 extends through the slot 76 of the plate 75 and is supported in the walls 4 and 5, respectively. To insure that the L-shaped dog 70 will ride the single tooth ratchet 32, a spring 82 may be pivotally connected to the pulley 31 by means of a screw 83 and the spring bent around the pin 84 on the pulley 31 to spring-press the leg 72 of the L-shaped dog 70 against the single tooth ratchet 32.
A series of circular pads, such as the pad 90, is located above the rollers 65. The pads 90 have a metal core 91 into which is sunk a supporting shaft 92. The shaft 92 is supported in the upper part of the upper front plate 10 by means of the nut 93. The shaft is held in position by blocks 94, which are attached to the front of the upper front plate 10 by means of the screws 95. The blocks 94 are formed to have a central bore 96 extending through them. The bore 96 at its upper end is substantially the same size as the shaft 92 that extends through it. The lower end 97 of the bore 96 is larger than the shaft 92. The diiference of size of the bore is stepped to form the shoulder 99. A spring 98 surrounds the shaft 92, one end abutting against t is shoulder 99 of the bore 96, the other end abutting against the top of the pad 90 to spring-press the pad against the belt 67. This tends to allow only one slip 20 to be dispensed from its bin 18 at one time.
The moistening means is contained in the compartment 17. The plate 22 and the plates 27 form a reservoir 100 of moistening material, such water. The moistening material is carried up and spread by means of a spreader, such as the brush 101. The brush 101 is formed of bristles 102 commonly used in brushes, and bound together at their lower ends by a sheet metal casing 103.
In order to moisten only that part of the binding slip that has been gummed, a shutter mechanism 105 is provided. The shutter mechanism is provided with a guide plate 106 which is supported and keyed on a shaft 107. The shaft 107 is rotatably supported at one end of the wall 5 of the container 3, the other end extends through the wall 5 of the container. A link 108 is keyed to the end of the shaft 107. The link 108 is pivotally connected at 110 to one end of the arm 112. The arm 112 is supported in and moves through a U-shaped brace member 113, which is located on the wall 4: by rivets 114, so as to locate one end of the arm 112 on the cam 40. The end of the arm 112 which is located on the cam 40 has rounded corners forming a nose 115. To cause the nose 115 of the arm 112 to move, on the cam 40, a spring 117 is attached at one end to one of the rivets 11 1 of the brace member 113 and at the other end to the arm 112, by means of a screw 120.
To cause the slips 29 to feed to the belts 67 and under the spring pressed pads 90, a metal weight 125 may be placed on them. The weight 125 is attached to the shaft 126, which extends through an opening 127 in the upper face plate 10, and is free to move vertically therein. The shaft 126 may have a head 128, which will serve as an indicator of the amount of slips 20 contained in the bins 18, it being understood that a weight 125 and a shaft 126 is provided for each bin.
In operating the device, the slips 20 are put in their respective bins 18 under the weights 125. One of the shafts 78 is pulled forward, moving its plate on the shaft 81 away from the leg 7 4 of the L-shaped dog 70. This allows the spring 82 to force the leg 72 of the L-shaped dog 70 against the single tooth ratchet 32, engaging the dog 70 with the tooth 33. The operator then moves the arm 58 and the sector 51, whose teeth engage the gear wheel 35. The dog 37 resses against the tooth 39 of the cam surface of the hub 36 of the gear wheel 35 to move the cam 40. The movement of the cam 40 causes the arm 112 to move against the tension of the spring 117 to raise the shutter 106 through the link 108. As the gear wheel continues to rotate, the pulley 31 moves the belt 67 over the rollers 66 and feeds a binding slip 20 between the belt 67 and the pad 90. At a point just before the completion of the delivery of the slip 20, the cam 40 on being further rotated allows the arm 112 to go over its high point, which closes the shutter 106 and forces the remainder of the slip to be delivered topass over the wet brush 102. Thus, on the completion of the delivery of the slip 20, it has been moistened and is ready for binding. The operator by passing his finger along the center of the slip 20 causes the moistened gum-portions of the slip to adhere to the other end of the slip, the surface over which such action is required being reduced by the gummed portions having sloped, or substantially rounded corners.
I claim:
1. In a dispensing machine having a container for binding slips, a handle supported on the wall of the container, a gear sector connected to the handle, a rotatable shaft extending through the walls of the container, a pinion keyed on the end of the shaft and located in meshing relation with the gear sector, a pulley located on the shaft and .freely rotatable thereon, a bin formed in the container above the pulley for holding the binding slips in horizontally disposed stacks and having an open end, a roller supported below the bin, a belt supported on the pulley and roller and extending over the opening, a spring pressed dog pivotally supported on the pulley, a single toothed ratchet fixedly mounted on the shaft and located proximate to the pulley, the single toothed ratchet adapted to be engaged by the dog to rotate the pulley upon rotation of the shaft, and a hand operated lever for releasing the dog from engagement with the single toothed ratchet.
2. In a dispensing machine having a container for binding slips, a stub axle supported on the wall of the container, a handle, the handle rotatably supported on the stub axle, the handle having an internal sector gear, a shaft rotatably mounted in the walls of the container and extending therethrough, a pinion keyed to the shaft, the internal sector adapted to engage the pinion, a bin formed within the container for holding the binding slips in horizontally disposed stacks and having a slotted opening, a roller member rotatably supported within the container proximate to one end of the slotted opening, a pulley supported on the shaft and freely rotatable thereon proximate to the opposite end of the slotted opening, a flexible sheet belt connecting the roller and the pulley and extending across the opening, a single tooth ratchet keyed to the shaft adjacent to the pulley, a spring pressed dog pivotally supported on the side of the pulley proximate to the single tooth ratchet, a hand operated lever adapted to engage the spring pressed dog for releasing the spring pressed dog whereby the spring pressed dog engages the single tooth ratchet to rotate the pulley and dispense a binding slip from the bin.
3. In a dispensing machine having a container for binding slips, a stub axle supported on the wall of the container, a handle, the handle rotatably mounted on the stub axle, the handle having an internal sector gear, a shaft rotatably mounted in the walls of the container and extending therethrough, a pinion keyed to the shaft, the internal sector gear adapted to engage the pinion, a plurality of bins formed within the container for holding the binding slips in horizontally disposed stacks, each of the bins having a slotted opening, a plurality of rollers rotatably supported within the container and proximate to one of the ends of the slotted openings, a plurality of pulleys mounted on the shaft and freely rotatable thereon, the pulleys located proximate to the other ends of the slotted openings, a plurality of flexible sheet belts connecting each of the plurality of rollers and pulleys, the belts extending across the slotted opening, a plurality of single tooth ratchets keyed to the shaft adjacent to the pulleys, a spring pressed dog pivotally supported on each of the plurality of pulleys proximate to an adjacent single tooth ratchet, a plurality of hand operated levers slidably supported in a Wall of the container, each of the hand operated levers adapted to engage each of the spring pressed dogs for permitting the engagement of the spring pressed dog with an adjacent single tooth ratchet whereby binding slips will be dispensed according to the particular hand operated lever actuated.
