Each gratebar is also 0 held against longitudinal movement in any desirable manner, as providing the same with depending lugs 10 which engage the contiguous parts of the frame. Another obvious way to prevent longitudinal movement is to set the ends of the grate bars in a recess or recesses in the end walls 7 of the frame. Of course, the parts are so fitted as to give a certain amount of play which will provide for limited longitudinal or transverse movements of the several grate bars.
Each grate bar is provided with a transverse circular opening or hole 11 having an entrance slot 12 leading thereto and I prefer that the hole and the slot be formed in a lobe 13 depending from each grate bar midway the length thereof so that lips 14 are produced for a purpose to be presently described. I
The support or frame 6 also includes a rear wall 15 and a front wall 16, the former having a small opening therethrough to .provide a bearing for the rear trunnion 17 of the fastening bar 18 while the front wall has an opening 19 therethrough, preferably circular in shape, although other shapes can be utilized, and at least as large as the opening 11 in each grate bar and in said opening 19 is removably mounted a sleeve 20 in which a hole 21 is formed to act as a bearing for the forward trunnion 22 of the fastening bar 18. Said bar may be formed with a tool hold 23 for the reception of a suitable tool, handle or crank for readily rotating said fastening bar.
The intermediate part 24: of the fastening bar, or the portion between the trunnions,'is of oblong shape in cross section so as to have a long dimension substantially the same as the diameter of the openings 19 and 11 and a shorter dimension substantially equal to that of the width of the slot 12 so that a grate bar may be passed over the flat portion of the fastening bar 24 and the latter then rotated within the opening 11. With the fastening barin the position shown in Fig. 2, so that its greatest dimension extends'crosswise of the slot 12, said grate bars cannot be displaced because the lips 14' under-lie the flat portion of said fastening bar but when said fastening bar is rotated" a quarter turn so that its greatest diameter will be vertical and in alignment with the slots 12 any one or more of the grate bars maybe readily lifted and removed from the fastening bar.
"he fastening bar is also provided'with means to prevent accidental withdrawal thereof or undue longitudinal movement which means may be in the form of pins 25 and 26, said pins being so mounted or constructed as to prevent the same from dropping out when the fastening bar is rotated or when the complete structure is tilted or inverted. One of said pins, as 26,.acts as a holding means or bolt to maintain the fastening bar in a grate bar fastening position or with the greater dimension of the flat intermediate portion in a horizontal position, by engagement with a lug 27 formed on or carried by the front wall 16. This pin can also be utilized to rotate the fastening bar and therefore the tool hold could be elim- .inated.
When originally assembling all of the grate bars in or on their frame, they can be placed in position and the fastening bar 18 then projected through the opening 19 in the front wall 16 of the frame and through the holes 11 in all of the bars until the rear trunnion 17 is set in its hearing. The sleeve 20 can then be placed upon the forward trunnion 22 and inserted in the opening 19 and finally the pins 25 and 26 inserted, with the pin 26 projecting into or through the lug 27 at which time all of the grate bars will be fastened in position against accidental displacement. By reversing the above ac tions, all of the grate bars can be removed. After the entire structure has been assembled and it is desired tov remove or replace one or more, but possibly not all, of the grate bars, the pin 26 is withdrawn from the lug 27 and the fastening bar rotated until its longer dimension is vertical or in alignment'with the slot 12. This unfastens the grate bars and the one or ones to be removed or replaced can be readily taken off or put back on the fastening bar and when everything is ready, the fastening bar is rotated in the opposite direction until its longer dimension is in a horizontal position crosswise of the slot 12 and so long as the fastening'bar is in this position the grate bars cannot be removed.
From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that I have provided an exceedingly simple and effective means for fastening gratebars in position to preventtheir accidental displacement as when the frame is tilted to a steep angle or actually inverted.
Of course, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown'and described as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is p A grate consisting of a stationary frame having an opening through one of its walls, a sleeve in said opening, a fastening bar having a fiat intermediate portion passable through said opening and journalled for rotation in the rear wall of the frame and said sleeve, a plurality of grate bars resting on said frame each having a transverse opening therethrough and a slot leading thereto,
said grate bars being individually removable or replaceable when the flat portion of the fastening bar is in alignment With the slots and held against accidental displacement when the flat portion of the fastening bar is crosswise of the slots, a 111g on the frame adjacent the position of the fastening bar, and means carried by said fastening bar for engagement with the lug t0 normally hold the fastening bar against rotation.
In testimenywhereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
WVALTER H. CLAWSON.
