A. STEVIJLEY, OF NEV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
SCISSORS-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,106, dated January 12, 1858.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW S'rnvELnY, ofthe city, town, and county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut7 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scissors- Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of the sharpener complete with the file inserted on one side only, and with slots or grooves to receive the file on both sides or at different angles on the same side. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sketch in perspective of the same. F ig. et shows the file in form to be inserted.
The nature of my inif'ention consists in my method of' inserting a file or other cutting instrumentfitted to operate on iron or steel at such an angle to a. plane surface as to furnish a cheap and convenient tool for sharpening all sizes of shears and scissors.
The Sharpener is made by fitting a file, or files on each side, as shown in Figs. 'l and 3, in a slot or groove on the side or opposite sides of a block which block I find most convenient to make in a. cubic form and in size from one to one and one half inches square. These slots or grooves may consist of one on each side only or they may be cut at different spaces as shown in the drawings and at different angles to receive the file so as to cut any required bevel upon t-he edge of the instrument to be sharpened. Thus shears which require a sharp bevel for the purpose for which they are used may be sharpened on the same instrument with shears which require a more flat bevel by simply changing the file from one slot to another-only observing that the slot or groove should be of such a width as that the file when driven into it shall be firmly held by the block.
Then the file is firmly Xed in the side of the block at the required angle the method of using' the Sharpener is to press the fiat part of' the blade of the shears or scissors to be sharpened against the side of the block, then by drawing the shears back the cutting surface of the file operates upon the bevel of the blade to form a perfect edge. This is speedily effected and the same Sharpener may be used for the smallest scissors or for tailor-s shears as the only requisite in use is to keep the flat part of the blade pressed against the side of the block.
I have described a file as best to be used but the same purpose may be accomplished by using a single bevel edge of steel, properly secured to the block and adjusting it to the proper angle.
IV hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- An instrument or tool formed by securing a file or other proper cutting edge or edges at a proper angle, variable or otherwise to the side of' a plane surface so as to form a cheap and eflicient Sharpener for all sizes of shears and scissors for family use when combined and fitted for use substantially as herein set forth.
ANDREIV STEVELEY.
In presence of- LnoIUs G. Pinon, T. BRIGHT.
