IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-MOLDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I9 1,045, dated May 22, 1877 application lled March 21, 1877.

To ali whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN GrLEs, of Patten, of the'county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molds for Shaping Butter; and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of Which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section, of one of my improved molds as it appears when in a closed state. Fig. 4 is a top view, and Fig. 5 an inner side view, of it as open. Fig. 6 is a top view, and Fig.7 an edge view, ofa wooden paddle or spatula of the kind to be used with such mold. Y

The mold is intended for the reduction of butter, cheese, or other like substance to quadrilateral prisms or blocks of a determined weight-as one pound, for instance-and to enable this to be accomplished readily and expeditiously.

It is composed not only of two side boards or plates, A A, provided with handles a a, and formed as represented, but of two end boards or plates, B U,such side and end boards or plates being arranged relatively to each other in manner as shown. The outer end board or plate C, rectangular in shape, laps on the outer extremities of the two side boards or plates, and is connected to them by hinges b b. The inner end board or plate B, square in shape, is joined to one ot' the side 'boards by one or more hinges, d, disposed as represented. Furthermore, the end board or plate B is provided with a slotted tongue, D, extending from it, and going through a hole, c, in the next adjacent side board. A wedge or key, when inserted in the slot e of the tongue, serves to hold the mold in aclosed state.

In using the mold, it, while shut, is to be charged with butter, which, after having been suitably packed or forced into the mold, is to have the surplus removed by the knife-edge spatula. The block of butter in the mold baving been properly finished by the said spatula or paddle P, may be removed from the mold by so opening and-manipulating the latter as to draw its plates successively oft' the block.

The quadrilateral blocks or prisms thus formed by the mold may be packed to great advantage in boxes of the right sizes t'or their reception.

This mold, besides being cheaper of construction, is in several respects preferable to a conlmon butter-press provided with one or more plungers, and a matrix or matrices therefor.

I am aware of' the butter-mold shown in the Patent No. 121,496, and therefore do not claim such, it having each ot' its sides usually per- -manently fixed to one ofthe adjacent end walls, and also having one side Wall and one end wall permanently fastened to a bottom board. In my mold one end, C, is hinged to both the side boards A A, the other end, being hinged to one of them, by which I am enabled to readily separate suchy boards better when molded by them, without having any corners for the lump to catch on or adhere to.

I claim- The improved butter-mold composed ot' the four end and side boards or plates A A B C, arranged and hinged together, and having handles a a, and a locking-tongue, D, and a hole, c, for its reception, all being substantially as set forth.
