Description

May 23, 1933. `F YOUN@ 1,910,312
RIDGE ROLL Filed April 14. 1930 Patented May 23, 1933 l PATENT OFFICE FRANK YOUNG, F LOGANSPOBT, INDIANA RIDGE Bonn YApplication led April 14,
The object of the invent-ion is to provide means for capping the ridge of a roof covered with asphalt or composition shlngles, so as to avoid the use of the metal strip Ev ordinarily employed for this purpose with its tendency to discolor the shingles by reason of rust; to provide a ridge roll of the general nature of an asphalt or composition shingle but which includes a metallic remforcement permitting-its being shaped to and retaining its seat upon the ridge, the
roll being colored in accordance with the shingles in connection with which it is used; and to provide an article of manufacture of this nature which is o'f simple form and susceptible of cheap manufacture and low marketing cost. p
With this object in view, the invention consists in a, construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective viewofl a section of a ridge roof showing the invention applied in operative'position.
Figures 2 and 3 are sectional views on the planes indicated by the lines 2-2 and 3 3 respectively of Figure 1.
It is customary, Where roofs are covered with composition shingles suc-h as those indicated at 10 to cap the ridge 11 with a piece of sheet iron which must necessarily be kept well painted to protect it; and even in such cases, the rust produced by the elements will id its way upon and Vdiscolor the shingles The present invention contemplates covering the ridge l1 with a roll of the same general nature as the shingles and consisting of a transversely arched metallic reinforcing plate 12 which may be and preferably is of ordinary sheet iron which is cheap as well as liable. The reinforcement on the inner Aof to cover substantially the entire surface 1930. Serial No. 444,311.
The reinforcing member being pliable, they roll may be readily shaped to the ridge and, at' its longitudinal edges, is turned down, as indicated at 16, to make contact with the adjacent rows ofvshingles.
`The sections of the roll are formed for lap-joint connection, the composition `15 being omitted from the reinforcement at one end, as indicated at 17, and the composition` 14 being omitted at the other end, as indicat- 60 ed at 18.A Thus adjacent sections|may be connected at theirA ends by overlapping the exposed portions of the reinforcements.l
'By means of the invention, the ridge of` the roof is made of the same general character as the shingled portions and the ridge, having been once trimmed, requires no further attention, as for example, painting to maintain it in condition, as where sheet iron is used, this materially reducing the cost 7o of upkeep. v
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
A strip for l`covering the ridge of a shingled roof 'and the like comprising a pliable metallic reinforcement of a character to be readily bent to shape, and a roofing composition applied on opposite sides therearea of both sides, the composition on one 80 side being omitted from one face of the. reinforcement for the full breadth thereof and for a distance back from the end an amount equal to the overlap of adjacent strips, the composition on the opposite side being omitted from a corresponding area at the opposite end of the reinforcement.
In testimony whereof Iafiix mv signature.
A FRANK YOUNG.
ace is covered with the composition 14 and 45 on the outer face with the composition 151of .of the same general nature as the composi- 4 tion 14, but colored in accordance with the shingles 10. The composition on both faces of the reinforcement is of the same general 50 nature as the composition of the shingles 10.
