J. F. LYNCH RUMBLE SEAT INCLOSURE Filed Dec. 28, 1952 5 Sheets-Sheet 5 Inventor rjmes 7". Lynch Patented May 16, 1933 UNITED STATES JAMES F. LYNCH, or rmnony, MASSACHUSETTS RUMBLE SEAT INCLOSURE Application filed December 28, 1932. Serial No. 649,212.
The present invention relates to an inclosure for the rumble seat of an automobile and has for its prime object to provide an inclosure of this nature which is simple in its construction, easy to manipulate, convenient,
compact when not in use, inexpensive to manufacture and install, thoroughly efiicient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. With the above and numerous other objects-in view aswill appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and 1n the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. I
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the inclosure showing the same in use. Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section therethrough. 1
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the rumble seat back, 7 l V V Figure 4: is a front elevation thereof, Figure 5 is a side elevation thereof, Figure 6 is a detail sectional view through the frame showing particularly the plate on the back curtain. I Figure 7 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 7-7 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a front elevation of the rumble seat back with the front cover removed to illustrate the frame.
Figure 9 is a vertical transverse section through the rumble seat back with the filler of hair removed. 7
Figure 10 is a perspective view of, the frame.
Figure 11 is a detail perspective view showing the brackets for connecting frame parts together.
Figure 12 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 12-12 of Figure 5.
' Figure 13 is a perspective view of the upper portion of'the inclosure.
Figure 14 is a longitudinal section through one of the telescopic sides of the frame.
Figure 15 is a fragmentary plan view showing the ends of the side members.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5' denotes a rumble seatcompartment with the seat 6 mounted therein and1the seat back 7 hingedly mounted as at8. Numeral 9 denotes the back curtain of the drivers compartment 10. The rumble seat back 7 comprises a panel 11 with a pair. of longitudinal partitions 12' thereon and a pair of transverse partitions 14 and 15 thereon thereby forming a large compartment A to be filled with air and the like such as is used in upholstery and a pair of side compartments Band a top compartment C which has end walls 15. Numeral 16 denotes a cover over the compartments A and B andalso extending over the compartment C; Access is had to the side compart ments D by a zipper fastener 17 and access is obtained to the upper compartment through a zipper fastener 18. Spring rollers 19 are mounted in the compartments B and have wound thereon sheets of waterproof material 20. A spring roller 21 ismounted in the compartment C and has a sheet of waterproof material 22 wound thereon and this sheet is provided with enlarged side flaps 23. An elongated flap 24 is fixed to the rear curtain in a somewhat inverted U-shaped formation and has snap'fasteners 25 to cooperate with fasteners on the sheets 20 and 22 and the side flaps 23. The side flaps 23 are attached to the side curtains or sheets 20 by suitable snap fasteners 26.
In order to hold the inclosure in aproper extended position I provide a frame formed by a cross rod 30 the ends of which are bent over and under itself as at 31 and terminates in downwardly disposed extensions 32 which are adapted to be slidably received in hollow uprights 33 mounted in the corners of the compartment A so that these rods may be raised and lowered. The hollow members or uprights 33 are formed in telescopically associated sections a. and I) so that the hollow members may be adjusted to fit different sized rumble seat backs and the sections 0, and b are held indifferent adjusted relationships by set screws 34:. The extensions 32 are held in the h'ollow members in either down or raised positions by set screws 36. Straps 37 are rockable on the rod 30 and 45 to engagethe other section 38.
have engaged therewith side members each of which includes a hollow section 38 in which is slidable a section 39 terminating in a head 40. The heads 40 are engageable with notched semi-circular plates 42 mounted on the rear curtain so that when the frame has been raised to the desired height the rod sections 39 may be pulled out and the heads engaged with the plate as indicated to advantage in Figures 6 and 7 and then the upper curtain .or sheet 22 may be unwound from the spring roller 21 and placed over the frame as indicated to advantage in Figures 1 and 2 and then engaged in the flap 2a.
A brace rod 44L is rockably engaged as at 48 with one section 38 and has a forked end Thus it will be seen that the side members of the frame may be folded as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 10 and stored in the upper compartment 0. 7
It is thought that the'construction, operation, 'utilityand advantages of this invention will now be clearly understood by those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. 1 c
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In combination with a rumble seat back provided with side compartments and an end compartment, of spring rollers mounted in said compartments, and flexible sheets or curtains windable thereon, the sheet associated with the end compartment having side flaps, and snap fasteners for engaging the side flaps with the other sheets, and a frame 1 foldably mounted in the back and extendible into the sheets for holding them in extended position. 7
