The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in signs and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this kind including a supporting structure or frame and one or more interchangeable or removable plates mounted in the supporting structure or frame.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a, sign of the character described embodying novel means for mounting the plates in the supporting structure or frame together with means for locking said plates in position.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a sign which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, attractive in appearance, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sup porting structure or frame of a sign constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a detail view principally in perspective and partially broken away in section of one of the uprights of the frame.
Figure 3 is a detail view in perspective of a pair of the plates.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a frame which is designated generally by the reference numeral 1, said frame including metallic, tubular posts 2 and 3 between the upper and lower portions of which cross members 4 extend. While the posts 2 and 3 are illustrated in the drawings as being substantially square in horizontal section, they may be of any suitable shape. The posts 2 and 3 are preferably anchored or embedded in the ground. Mounted on the upper end of the post 2 is a, cap 5.
The inner sides of the posts 2 and 3 have formed therein vertical slots 6 having notches 7 projecting horizontally from the opposite sides thereof. In its outer side, the post 3 has formed therein a similar notched slot 8 which is alined with the slots 6.
The reference numeral 9 designates metallic plates which are mounted in the slots 6 of the posts 2 and 3, said plates having oppositely extending flanges 10 on their upper and lower edges which are engageable in the notches 7 of said slots 6 for removably supporting the plates in position between the posts. The plates 9 may be of any suitable size so long as the flanges 10 are spaced properly for engagement in the notches 7.
The plates 9 are mounted in position by sliding the same horizontally through the slots 8 and 6 of the post 3 until one end of said plates rests in the slot 6 of the post 2 and the other ends thereof rest in the slot 6 of the post 3. Then, a substantially channel-shaped locking bar 11 is slidably inserted in the post 3 for closing the slot 8, thereby preventing removal or withdrawal of the plates 9. As clearly seen in Figure 2 of the drawings, the open side of the bar 11 is adjacent the inner side of the post 3 while the closed side or bight portion of said bar 11 is adjacent the outer side of said post 3 for closing the slot 8. The post 3 is open at its upper end for slidably receiving the bar 11. A cap 12, similar to the cap 5, is mounted on the upper end of the bar11.
It will thus be seen that a sign has been provided through the medium of which the indicia-bearing plates 9 may be expeditiously inserted and removed as desired. Further, as many of the plates 9 as wished may be gm MU mounted in the frame 1. The notches 7 are so spaced as to cause the plates 9 to overlap, as suggested in Figure 3 of the draw ings, and the slots in the posts 2 and 3 are of sutficient width to permit this.
It is believed that the many advantages of a sign constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A sign comprising a pair of spaced, op-
posed posts, said posts having notched slots in their opposed sides, panels extending between the posts and having their end portions engaged in the slots, and flanges on the panels engaged in the notches of the slots.
2. A sign comprising a pair of spaced, opposed posts having notched slots extending vertically in their opposed sides, cross mem bers extending between the posts, removable plates extending between the posts and having their end portions engaged in the slots, oppositely extending flanges on each plate 3 engageable in the notches on opposite sides of the slots for supporting the plates in said slots, and means for locking the plates in the slots.
3. A sign comprising a pair of spaced, opposed posts having slots in their opposed sides, said slots having notches in their opposite walls, a plate mounted in the slots, and oppositely extending flanges on the upper and lower edges of the plate engageable in the notches on opposite sides of the slots for supporting the plate in position in said slots.
4. A sign comprising a pair of spaced, 0pposed posts, said posts having slots in their opposed sides, one of the posts further hav- L. ing a slot in its outer side alined with the first named slots, a plate removably mounted in the first named slots, said plate being insertable through the second named slot, and a bar slidably mounted in said one post for closing the second named slot for locking the plates in position.
5. A sign comprising a pair of spaced, opposed, tubular posts, said posts having vertical slots in their opposed sides, one of the posts further having a vertical slot in its outer side alined with the first named slots, a plate removably mounted in the first named slots, said plate being insertable through the second named slot, and a substantially channel-shaped bar slidably insertable in said one post for closing the second named slot for retaining the plate in position.
6. A sign comprising a pair of spaced, opposed, tubular posts having vertical slots in their opposed sides, one of the posts further EVAN G. BOWER.
