In the form of window here shown, the side members or jambs are each made of two bent members. outwardly extending portion 10 and a hooi; shaped portion 12. Welded into the back of the hook shaped portion 12 is a second member 14 which is L-shaped with its outside part slightly bent outwardly. The bottom branch 66 of this Vmember pivots about the same pivot as offset portion 58 of fork 54 and the upper branch is pivoted to bracket 62 on the same pivot which is used for attaching fork 54.
Between the branches of these forks are piv oted a second pair of bars 70 and 72. Bars 70 and 72 are pivoted together at 74. The
upper bar 70 is here shown as pivoted to a bracket 6 `carried by sash 40 and at the other endis pivoted to the upper branch of fork v64. The lower bar 72 in like manner is pivs" oted'to a Vbracket 78 carried by lsash 36 and above the other and between the branches of .the forks. When either sash is pushed out,
the other sash will tra-vel with it due to the p 'i lazy'tongs effect and the sashes will be adequately supported by the forks and bars described. Also this structure has one added ladvantage. Windows of this type are frequently used in institutions such as sanitariums and hospitals where precautions have to be taken against patients throwingthemselves from the window. The forks 54 and 64 and the bars 7 0 and 72 serv-e to form a net workv ,filling the space between the sashes when fthel window is open to the position shown in Fig. 5.
In view of the fact that sash 36 carries the extension plate 38, it is desirable that rthis sash be pushed open iirst. Accordingly kthis sash is here shown as provided with the operating handle. This handle 7 9l is pivoted v n to the sash near the ycenter of the window and viso.

What claim is:
1. In combination with a window frame, two sashes,rand hinge mechanism connecting snch sashes with the frame adjacent its Vertical axis comprising a member pivoted to each sash and pivoted to the frame along a common. axis, and ay second pair of members pivoted together intermediate their ends and each pivoted at one end to a sash and .at its other` end to that one of said first members which is pivoted to the other sash in such a way that when the sashes are open the sashes and said members will, in all positions, substantially define four parallelograms.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1 in which said pivoted members are adapted to be folded into substantially one straight line.
3. A structure as specified in claim lA in which a set of such pivoted members is'connected to the sashes near but not above their tops in a pla-ne above the bottom of the lintel member of the window frame and another set of such members is connected to the sashes n-ear but not below their bottoms in a plane below the top of the sill member of the window frame, so that when the window is closed said hinge mechanisms will be embraced between the sashes and window frame.v
4. In combination with a window frame,
two sashesr opening horizontally and hingev mechanism connecting such sashes with the frame comprising a member pivoted to each sash at approximately equivalent points thereof and to the frame upon a common axis,keach of said members being approximately of the same length and being forked at the end pivoted to the frame, and a second pair of members each approximately of the same length and pivoted together midway their ends and each pivoted'at one end toa sash and at its otherend to one of the first members so that when the sashes are opened horizontally the second pair of members maintains the sashes approximately equidistant from the frame and so that when'the sashes are closed said second pair of members folds substantially within the forked ends of the first pair, and all of said members are 1
