Description

H. FERRARI, JR
GAME APPARATUS Filed April 19. 1932 FIG. 1.
M 'QAq-CT D E T E F INVENTOR ERRA JR- Patented May 2, 1933 NiTEos ATEs HERMAN FERRARI, JIL, GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA GAME APPARATUS Application filed April 19,
This invention relates to an improved game apparatus designed for the playing of a high- 'ly entertaining game having the characteristics of an election contest, and which may be appropriately called the game of politics. The object of the present inventionis to provide a game apparatus of the above kind,
the use of which in playing a game will re quire the exercise of skill and will prove Figure 2 is a section on 'line22 of F igure 1.
' Figure 3 is a face view of one of the cards used as a play indicating'means and ers or chips.
Referring in detail to the 'drawing, the present game apparatus comprises a game board 5, chips or markers 6, and play indicating means such as a deck of cards 7.
The game board 5 has suitably provided, in or upon'one face thereof a circular series of separated radial grooves or spaces G which are divided transversely by uniformly spaced "T lines into uniform divisions B, each radial space bearing the name of a state of the United States as shown, and'the letters of e such name being arranged in separate divi- 810118 of the space. Beside certain letters of indicated'at the inner end of such name as at A and equals the total number of electoral votes possessed by'that state. Thereare, of course, the same number of radial 'grooves or spaces G as there are states in the union, and these spaces are numbered consecutively for identification asaat C. lVithin the circular series of spaces, a map of the United States is suitably provided as at 12, and each state is designated within its boundaries by its name as'at 13. Also provided within the boundaries of each state as at E is a number indicating the number of elec- Figure 4 is a plan-view of one of the mark-j 1932. Serial No. 606,229.
toral votes possessed by that state and an arrow D pointingtoward the space G in which the name .of that state is provided. A pocket- F is provided at each corner of the board to hold a number of the markers 01'" chips 6.
1 The markers or chips 6 are in the form of square plates or wafers ofudifferent colors and each of a size to cover one of the divisions B, there being a number of markers" of each color so that each player may use markers of a color difierent from that of the markers of each of the other players.
The play indicating means preferably. consists of a deck of cards 7, preferably fiftytwo in number. Each card preferably bears two columns of letters as at I and J, and the letters of -all of the cards correspondto all of the valued letters in the names of all of the states provided in the spaces Gon the game board.
The game can be played by two or more players. In playing. the game, each player is allotted all of the markers of a particular color. The cards are then placed in a stack, and each player-takes a turn atdrawing a card. In the first run'of the cards, only the left-hand column of letters on each card is used. Assuming that the first card drawn is that illustrated, the player drawing. the same will place one of his markers'or chips over a letter M in the name of one ofthe states in the spaces G on the-game board,
another marker over a letter D of a differ- HZ? the name of each stateare provided nu-' merals 11, and'the total of all numerals for all the letters of the name of each state is:
ent state,-and still another marker over a" letter T- of a still different state. The next player then draws a card and plays in a' 7 similar way, according to the letters in the left-handc'olumn of that card, and so on until all of the cardsare drawn. The cards are then shufliedanddrawn overagain, the right-hand-column 'ofletterson each card being then used. At the end of the second drawing, all of the valued letters of the names ofall of'the states in the spaces G will have been covered by markers or chips. The player's then tabulate their respective electoral votes. For instance, one player may have covered the letters PESYVN, and another player the letters NNLAIA of the State of Pennsylvania. In that case, the first player would have a total electoral vote of 20 and the second player would have a total electoral vote of 16 for that state. This state would therefore go to the first player, who would get the entire 39 electoral votes of such state.
The vote of each state is determined-in this way, and the player having the greatest grand total of electoral votes wins the game. It will be noted that a particular letter may have a different value in oneplace than in another, of the state names. Accordingly, success in playing the game depends to some extent on skillful selection of the best place to play the chips or markers.
The cards 7 may bear identifying numerals as at 20 corresponding to those of the spaces at C, to permit a variation in the mode of playing the game, if desired.
While I prefer to use adeck of cards as the play indicating means, it is apparent that dice or a suitable chance device may be used instead, without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
WVhat I claim is:
