In razors of the type mentioned one of the blade clamping elements, the blade backing member, is provided with a screw-threaded clamping pin 'which is adapted to be extended through the blade and through a hole in the guard member, for engagement with a screw-threaded bore in the handle of the holder, said pin and handle'serving to bring the blade clamping elements into proper relation for shaving; Therefore, when a used blade is to be replaced, it is ne cessary to disengage the handle from the clamping pin, that is to say the holder must be taken apart with the consequent liability of dropping or losing parts, which is an objectionable feature of devices of this character.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a blade holder and blade cons struction whereby the elements of the razor need not be taken apart for the purpose of either replacing a blade or for cleaning the elements.
lVith these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts herelnafter described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. a Two of the many possible embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an end View of a razor constructed n accordance with the present 1nvention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. '2, part of the blade backing member being shown in elevation tov properly illustrate the relation of the elements; Fig.4 is a section taken on line 44: of Fig. 2; Fig 5 is a top'plan view of the guard member of the construction; Fig.

Referring now first to Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, of the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the guard member, the numeral 11 the blade, and the numeral 12 the blade backing member of the razor, so organized that the said blade may be clamped between said members. The guard member is shown of the variety having guard teeth 13 in its opposite longitudinal edges, along which the cutting edges 14 of the blade may extend in an ordinary way for shaving. Any suitable means may be provided for causing the blade to be clamped between the guard and backing members. In :the example illus trated in the drawing, the backing member is provided with a centrally arranged screwthreaded pin 15, which 715 adapted to pass through an aperture 16 in the blade and through an opening 17 in the guard member, and to engage a screw-threaded socket 18 in av handle 19, to clamp the parts together for shaving. v i
The aperture 16 is, generally speaking, in the form of 'a central longitudinal slot,
which extends from one of the transverse edges of the blade, denoted by the numeral 20, toward the other transverse edge, but
stops short of the latter. This slot is pro ,vided with a central transverse enlargement 21, through which the clamping pin 15 is adapted to pass. The said slot is furthermore provided on either side of the said central enlargement with a transverse enlargement 22, the last-mentioned enlargements being disposed adjacent the ends of the slot and being adapted totake each a cylindrical positioning-stud of the blade holders of the ordinary Gillette. type of safety razors. In each corner of the blade is formed a re-entrant recess 23, vfor a purpose hereinafter to be described. The blade aperture 16 is adapted to receive -a noncylindrical positioning stud 24, in the form of a rib, extending from the blade engaging face of the backing member 12 and being arranged in the longitudinal center line of the latter. This ribis uninterrupted throughout its length, the pin 15 projecting from the free edge thereof (see Fig. 4). The rib is adapted to enter a groove 26 in the longitudinal center line of 'the uard member 10, thereby positioning the lade and clamping member in relation to the guard teeth. I
Adjacent one of the transverse edges of the bladebacking member 12 extend'from the blade engaging face of the latter two projections 27, they being located at the intersection of the said transverse edge with her and guard member, respectively, and
the two longitudinal edges of the blade backing member, that is to say at the corners thereof. These projections fit and enter the re-entrant recesses 23 in the blade at that transverse edge thereof into which the blade slot opens, and serve to prevent spreading of the blade when the latter is clamped in the holder, as will hereinafter more fully appear. In the opposite transverse edge of the blade backing member 12 is formed a notch 28, adapted to register with a notch29 in the guard member, 'to
permit grasping-pf th blade when the lat ter is to be removed rom the holder.
In Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawing the elements of the razor are shown assembled foruse. The projections 27 on the blade backing member are seated in those two re-entrant recesses, 23 of the blade which are adjacent the open .end of the blade slot and thereby prevent spreading of the blade as the latter is clamped between the guard and backing members. When the blade is to be removed from the holder, the handle 19 is unscrewed from the clamping pin 15 to an extent that the guard and backing members are separated to release the blade; more particularly until the blade flattens out. The blade is then grasped between two fingers inserted into the registering notches 28 and 29 in the blade backing memdrawn longitudinally of the holder until the rib 24 is disengaged from the blade slot, when it may be readily removed from the holder. A new blade may then be inserted by bringing the open end of the slot therein into alignment with the rib on the blade backing member and shifting the blade longitudinally on the holder until stopped by the slot end abutting against screwed down, whereby-the blade is properly flexed and clamped between the guard and backing members. From the foregoing it will be seen that the blades may be mounted upon-and taken off the blade clamping members and that the safety razor may be efliciently cleaned without the necessity of taking the device to pieces.
Attention is called to the fact that for the proper co-operation of the razor elements, re-entrant recesses need be formed only in that end of the blade in which the blade slot terminates. The re-entrant recesses shown in the drawing on the opposite blade end are provided only in order to obtain a symmetrical blade. This is, however, not necessary as appears from the construction illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawing, in which only in one blade end are provided recesses 30, for co-operation with pin-like projections 31 on the blade backing member 32. The operation of the device shown in Fig. 8
y will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
It is obvious that, while herein the positioning stud, that is the rib 24 has been described as being located on the backing member and the groove 26 has been specified as being formed in the guard member, the relative positions of these elements may be reversed without departing from the invention, which lies mainly in the provision of a construction wherein an open slotted blade may be mounted upon and removed from the holder without taking apart the elements of the latter. As far as the gist of the invention is concerned, vit is immaterial whether the means for preventing spreading of the blade are located on the blade backing member, as herein described, or on the guard member. It is also obvious that, instead of the specific positioning stud herein referred to, one or more studs of other forms may be used on the holder for cooperation with the blade slot.
What I claim is 1.. A safety razor, comprising blade clamping members, a blade having transverse edges adapted to fit between said members, multiple means to clamp said members on said blade, said blade having a central \longitudinal slot opening into one of its transverse edges, a blade positioning rib extending longitudinally of .one of said clamping members adapted to enter said slot and permitting the blade to be shifted longitudinally between said blade clamping members while the elements of said clamping means are in engagement with one another, said blade being provided with recesses in that transverse edge thereof into which said slot opens, and projections on one of said clamping members adapted to be seated in said recesses to prevent spreading of the blade at its open slot portion when said clamping members are being clamped thereon.
