The metallic sheet or plate 3 is clamped and firmly held in position to cover the aperture in the structure and to cover and compress the cement by threaded nuts 10 which are mounted on and in threaded engagement with the projecting threaded ends of the anchor-bolts 5 onthe outside of the said metallic sheet or strip 3. The plastic cement is thus tightly compressed and held in place between the structure and said metallic strip or sheet, and the latter is securely clamped and held in operative position by said anchor-bolts and nuts.
In the form of my improved device and invention. shown in the accompanying; drawing, a pair of longitudinal approximately parallel recesses or grooves 11 are made in the structure 1 on opposite sides of the aperture or joint 2 and in approximately parallel relation to each other and to the said aperture 'or joint to be closed and sealed. Longitudinal marginal ribs 12 are provided which are by preference channel-shaped and rigidly secured to the opposite longitudinal margins of the metallic sheet or strip 3 by means of litharge cement or equivalent soldering or welding material applied to the parts to be united, said connected parts being subjected to the process of burning or fusing whereby the said parts are united together while in a heated partially melted condition. Each of said longitudinal marginal ribs 12 is adapted to form an integral longitudinal side flange or marginal rib on said metallic sheet or strip. And said longitudinal marginal ribs 12 are by preference on the inner side of said metallic strip or sheet and adapted to be embedded in the plastic cement contained in said grooves 11 on opposite side-s of the aperture or joint 2, when the metallic sheet or strip 3 is in place and the device is in operation.
Each of the longitudinal grooves 11 connects a series of said bolt-containing recesses or pockets 6 in the structure 1; and said boltretaining recesses are of greater depth than the groove in the bottom of which said recesses :or pockets are made, and of which they may be said to form a part.
After making the longitudinal grooves 11 and the bolt-reccivingrrecesses or pockets 6, and setting the anchor-bolts 5 in said recesses or pockets, said grooves and recesses and the space between the said grooves on opposite sides of the aperture 2 to be closed,-including the space between the surface of the undisturbed area 9 of the structure 1 and the metallic plate or strip 3,are filled with and covered by the cement 8 in a plastic condition; and the plate or strip 3 with its longitudinal marginal ribs 12 thereon are placed in position to cover and enclose the aperture or joint 2, with the said marginal ribs embedded in the plastic cementitious material contained in the grooves 11 and with the anchor bolts 5 in position in the recesses 6 and grooves 11 and extending through the adjacent perforated ribs 12 and bolt-receiving apertures 4 in the metallic sheet or strip. The threadednuts 10 are then placed upon the anchor-bolts and tightened in clamping engagement with the outer face of the metallic sheet or strip 3 so as to clamp and securely hold the latter in position and compress and securely hold the cement or plastic cementitious material in position to close and seal all of said apertures and spaces containing said cementitious material.
A transverse end groove 13 is made in the concrete or masonry structure and extends across the adjacent extremity of the aperture 2 to be closed and sealed; and a transverse end rib or bar 14 is provided and welded or otherwise secured in rigid engagement with the inner side of the adjacent end margin of the metallic strip or sheet 3 so as to eXtend' across the adjacent end of the aperture 2 in the structure 1, for enclosing the same and for closing and sealing the space between the adjacent ends of the longitudinal ribs 12 and between the ends of said strip or sheet 3 and the surface ofthe structure adjacent to the end of the said aperture or joint 2 in said structure. 7
A similar transverse groove 15 is made in the structure 1 in position toextend across the opposite extremity of the aperture or joint 3 2 in the structure 1 and the corresponding extremities of the longitudinal grooves 11 and transversely between the corresponding end portions of the ribs 12; and a transverse end rib 16 is welded or otherwise rigidly secured to the adjacent end ofthe sheet or strip 3 and adapted to be embedded in the con-' crete-or cement in a plastic condition in said groove 15 when the metallic strip or sheet 3 with its attached or integral marginal ribs" 12, 14 and 16 are secured in operative position upon the structure.
lVhen the aperture 2 to be repaired or closed and sealed is in an uprightwall, said upper transverse rib 16 and said groove 15 for receiving the same are usually not required and maybe dispensed with; but when I v said aperture or joint 2 is to be closed and sealed throughout its entire length and 'enclosed or covered and sealed at both of the extremities of said aperture or o int, the transverse end ribs 14 and 16 and transverse grooves for receiving the same serve to effec which covers the enclosed aperture or joint 2 and the enclosed surface of the structure on opposite sides of said aperture or joint, all serve to effectually close and seal said aperture or joint, and render the structure waterproof and strong.
Perforated channel-shaped or U-shaped washers 17, having inwardly extending longitudinal flanges 18 adapted to be pressed into abutting clamping engagement with the outer surface of the metallic sheet or strip 3, are provided and mounted upon the projecting ends of the anchor-bolts 5 between the nuts 10 and said metallic sheet or strip, for compressing the longitudinal margins of the latter inward in waterproof adhesive engagement with the cementitious material 8.
These flanged or channel-shaped washers are required and well adapted for use in connection with my improved device, more particularly when, for any reason the longitudinal marginal ribs or channels 12 are not employed; I prefer, however, to employ said longitudinal marginal ribs or flanges 12 which are rigidly secured to the longitudinal margins of said sheet or strip as above described, or by any ordinary and well-known or suitable connecting means.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a structure having an aperture therein to be closed, of a metallic sheet member having perforations in its opposite longitudinal margins, headed anchor-bolts anchored in the structure on opposite sides of the aperture to be closed and adapted to extend into said perforations in said metallic sheet member for holding the latter in posi tion upon said structure and over said aperture, cementitious material between said metallic sheet member and the surface portions of said structure located on opposite sides of said aperture and adapted to cover and close said aperture and fill the space between said metallic sheet member and the surface of said structure, and clamping means comprising threaded nuts in threaded engagement with said anchor-bolts and in engagement with said metallic sheet member for clamping and holding the latter in leak-proof contact with said cementitious material and in position to cover and enclose said aperture in said structure.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a structure having an aperture therein to be closed, of a metallic sheet member having a series of perforations in the opposite longitudinal margins thereof, a series of anchor-bolts anchored in said structure on opposite sides of the aperture to be closed and adapted to extend into said perforations, longitudinal marginal ribs on opposite longitudinal margins of said metallic sheet member, cementitious material enclosed between said metallic sheet member and the surface of said structure on all sides of said aperture and adapted to fill the space between threaded nuts on the threaded ends of said anchor-bolts and in engagement with said metallic sheet member for clamping'and holding the latter and said cementitiousmaterial in position'to cover and close andihermetically seal said aperturein said structure:
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a structure-having an aperture therein to be closed, of a. metallic sheet member having perforations in bpposite longitudinal margins thereof, anchor-bolts anchored in said structure on opposite sides of the'aperture to be closed, said bolts being adapted to extend into said perforationsin said metallic sheet member, said structurebeing provided with longitudinal grooves thereinlocated on opposite sides of said aperture and insubstantially parallel'relation to each other, cementitious material in said' grooves and adapted to fill and close said aperture and the space between said metallic sheet member and the portions of said structure located on opposite sides of said aperture and between said grooves,'longitudinal marginal ribs on the opposite margins of said me tallic sheet member and embedded in said cementitious material, and threaded nuts on and in threaded engagement with said anchor-bolts and in engagement with the outer surface 'of said metallic sheet member for clamping and holdingthe latter in closely fitting clamping engagement with said comentitious material and in position to effect the closing and sealing of said aperture in saidstructurea V I 4'. In a device of the class described, the combination with a structure having an aperture thereinto beclosed,of a'met-allicsheet member having perforations in its opposite r longitudinal margins, headed anchor-bolts anchored in the structure on opposite sides of the aperture to be closed and adapted to extend into said perforations in said metallic sheet member for holding the latter in position upon said structure and over said aperture, cementitious material located between said metallic sheet member and the surface of said structure and adapted to cover and close said aperture in said structure, longitudinally flanged metallic channel members extending lengthwise of said metallic sheet member on the opposite longitudinal margins of the same and provided with perforations for receiving said anchor-bolts, and securing means comprising threaded nuts on and in threaded engagement with the ends of said anchor-bolts on the outside of the perforated margins of said metallic sheet member and adapted to securely hold said sheet member in position upon said structure.
5. In a repair devicefor closing ruptures lid in concrete and the like structures, including a metal sheetmernber adapted to overlie the rupture to be sealed and having a series of perforations adjacent the rupture, clamping bolts extending through said perforations, means for anchoring the bolts in the concrete structure adjacent the rupture, and a sealing member positioned between and adapted to be clamped against the concrete structure and 0-. the metallic sheet metal member.
