This invention relates tofasteninginserting machines and is illustrated herein as embodied in a machine for attaching to "shoes or to heel bases rubber heels, top pieces .or like members which require their fastenings to be driven at definite locations.

In view of the above it is an object of thepresent inventionto provide animproved fastening inserting machine in which the work may be positioned properly relatively to the line of drive of the fasteningsbymeans of a single member which isoperable also to insert fastenings into the work .and which is illustrated herein as a naileinserting, driver.

Machines-of this type. areprovided with clutch mechanism ,byhmeans of which the operation of the fastening insertinginstrumentalities may be initiated and suspended. A work support is caused to press the work against an abutment or presser plate during the insertion of the fastenings and neans is provided for relieving this pressure to allow the work to be fed. Such machines may be provided with separate treadles to control the raising and lowering of the work support for the removal and replacement of the work and the starting and stopping of the fastening inserting instrumentalities. Since in nz iiling shoe partsof the type referred to above it is necessary'for the operator to locate the work for each nail to be driven in order that the nails will be driven accurately through the ,nail receiving holes formed in the work, the machine is usually stopped aftereach nailis inserted. Also the spacing between various nail locations in a rubber heel, top piece or like member ordinarily differs and consequently a set mechanical feed of the work cannot usually be employed.
In the illustrated machine and according toan important feature of the invention, the

under the block sition to clamp the work against As usual in machines of the type hereinbefore referred to the illustrated machine, like the machine of said Letters Patent, is provided with a raceway adapted to receive previously formed headed nails from a hopper, a separator for separating the endmost nail of a line of nails in the raceway and movable to present the nail to the operation of the nail driver. In the illustrated machine, however, the awl, the awl supporting mechanism and the mechanism for producing the swing of the head of the machine which imparts the work feeding movement to the awl are removed. In describing the present I invention it is unnecessary to set forth in detail the construction and mode of operation of many of the parts of the machine and for a full description of such parts reference may be had to the said Letters Patent.
The illustrated machine is provided with a main frame or column carrying at its upper end a head 12 and with a secondary column 14 carrying a work support illustrated as a last pin 16. The head 12 carries a cam shaft 18 from which the various parts of the nachine are operated. A driver bar 20 carrymg a driver 22 is moved upwardly by means of a lifting cam 24 which engages a block 26 carried by the driver bar 20. A spring 28 anchored at one end to a stationary part of the head of the machine and connected at the other end by a link 30 with the driver bar 20 forces the driver bar 20 and driver 22 downwardly when the cam 24 passes out from 26, thus driving a nail into the work, and is compressed as the cam 24 lifts the driver bar 20. The worksupport 16 is arranged to clamp the work against a presser plate 32 which limits its upward movement. The work support 16 is moved downwardly from a pressure applying position after the driver 20 has driven a fastener to allow the work to be fed by the operator and upwardly into a pressure applying pothe presser plate 32 prior to the fastening inserting operation by suitable release mechanism, for example as disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 265,227, granted September 26, 1882, on an application of Louis God du, also driven from cam shaft 18 by means of a cam 34. The cam 34 is connected with a horn depressing lever 42, having its fulcrum at 44 and connected at 46 to the lower end of a work supporting shaft 48 carrying at its upper end the work support 16, by means of a ratchet and pawl arrangement which allows the work support to be de pressed a predetermined amount after each fastening is inserted notwithstanding variations in the thickness of the work, as more fully set forth in Letters Patent No. 265,227. The operator may depress the work support to place the work thereon by means of a foot treadle 50 pivoted at 44 and having its rear end engaging the lever 42 at the rear of its fulcrum.
The driver 22 is set in such a position vertically in its carrying bar 20 that the lower end of the driver 22 projects a definite distance below the work engaging face of the presser plate 32 at the conclusion of the driver stroke. The front of this presser plate 32 is preferably cut away so that the operator may easily see the lower end of the driver 22. The illustrated machine, like the machine of Letters Patent No. 490,624, is provided with the usual clutch controlling mechanism by means of which a driving pulley 52 rotatably mounted upon the shaft 18 is caused to move axially on the shaft 18 to engage a clutch member fixed to the shaft 18 when starting treadle 54 is depressed by the operator. In order to bring the machine to rest promptly after the clutch is disengaged, the illustrated machine is also provided with the usual brake operating mechanism comprising a cam 56 fast to the shaft 18, a cam lever 58, and a brake band 60. The brake band 60 is arranged to engage the periphery of the cam 34 to check rotation of the shaft 18 after-each nail has been driven. The relation of the timing of various parts of the machine, as shown in Fig. 3, is such that the machine is arranged to come to a stop, after each nail has been driven, with the end of the driver 22 projecting below the work engaging surface of the presser plate 32 and the work support 16 depressed sufficiently to allow the operator to move the work to a fresh position. The driver 22 in its inoperative position may be used as a gage to lo cate the work by causing the end of the driver to be threaded into a recess such as that which usually occurs above each washer in the tread surface of a rubber heel.
In operation the operator moves the work support 16 downwardly by means of the treadle 50 to a work receiving position and places upon the last pin 16 a shoe mounted upon a last and then positions an unattached rubber heel on the heel-seat portion of the sole of the shoe. When the treadle 50 is released, the work support 16 moves upwardly, not, however, sufliciently to apply a clamping pressure to the shoe and heel, and the operator, by the end of the driver 22,- locates a recess in the rubber heel which requires a fastener. Then, by depressing the treadle 54, he causes the machine to drive a single nail in the selected position.
