This invention is for improvements in packages for cigarettes, and has for its object the provision of means whereby a package which is sealed at least at one end by side tucks andtwo broad end flaps may be partially opened to permit of the cigarettes to be removed therefrom.
The present invention consists of a cigarette package closed at least at one end thereof by two side tucks and two broad end flaps and having a cord arranged between the cigarettes and around one side tuck so that when the package is sealed the said side tuck may be torn from the package toexpose the ends of those cigarettes located adjacent to that side of the package.
One method of carrying the invention into effect will hereinafter be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which ShOWs a package made up of an inner liner formed from a piece of reinforced foil which is inserted into a cup shaped envelope, open at one end, the whole being subsequently wrapped in an outer covering of thin transparent paper which is the usual practice em-. ployed in the packing of. cigarettes in the United States of America.

eferring to the drawing: the cigarettes are enclosed in a wrapper 1 of reinforced foil and one narrow side flap is slit as shown at 2 and a piece of cord 3 is laid in position as shown.
The narrow side flaps 2 and 4 e thereafter folded over the ends of the cigarettes as shown in Fig. 2, and it will be observed that the flap 4 differs from the flap 2, owing to the slits in the edges of the latter. It will also be observed that the cord '3 is now held in position by the flap '2.
The broad flaps 5 and 6 are now folded down as shown in Fig. 3, and the wrapped batch thrust into an outer paper cup 7.
The cup 7 is thereafter enclosed in an outer block ended envelope 8 made of thin transparent paper or similar material, and the cord 3 is bent as illustrated so that the same lies along the corners of one narrow panel.
The narrow side folds 9 and 10 of the outer wrapper are thereafter folded down and the cord 3 consequently takes up the position shown in Fig. 5.
The broad flaps 11 and 12 of the outer wrapper 8 are thereupon folded down and the cord firmly secured to the packet. The ends of the cord may be afterwards connected together to form a complete loop, which loop may have threaded through it a disc having any desired matter printed thereon,
or "the disc may, if necessary, be of sealing wax so as to connect the ends of the cord together.
It will be observed that if the cord is pulled, the side tucks 9 and 10 of the outer transparent covering 8 are torn and the side tuck 2 of the inner foil wrapper is removed bodily, exposing the ends of the cigarettes located adjacent to that side of the package.
Thus, the package is provided with an opening which only exposes one or two cigarette's, whilst at the same time it is provided with a complete envelope of thin transparent paper which keeps the remaining cigarettes within the package in condition.
