The device forming the subject matter of this application is a-puinping mechanism of the kind disclosed in my prior'Patent No. 744,618. One object of the invention is to improve the structure by using a single frame, at the top of the well, instead of employing two vertically spaced frames. Another obj ect of the invention is to cut down the amount of piping required, by making the hollow piston rod serve as a part of the outlet for the water.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view,
which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combinat1on and arrangement of parts and in the de tails of construction hereinafter described Figures and 6 are vertical sections taken,,
respectively, on the lines 55 and 6-6 of Figure 4.
The numeral 1 marks a well, at the upper end of which there is a foundation 2 carrying sills 3 on which is supported a single frame 4 embodying foot plates 5 connected on their lower sides by cross bars 6 and connected on their upper sides by cross bars 7 carrying upstanding bearing posts 8. Upwardly extended brackets 9 are located to one side of the cross bars 7 and are secured at 10 to lugs 11 on the foot plates 5. A main shaft 12, which is horizontally disposed, is journaled for rotation in the bearing posts 7. A short shaft 14 is journaled in lateral offsets 15 on the posts 8. A roller 16 is carried for rotation on the shaft 14 and is disposed in the same horizontal plane with a pinion 17 secured to the shaft 12, and to main shaft 12, between the brackets 9, the gear wheel 18 meshing with a pinion 19 on a PATENT OFFICE CHARLOTTE, NORTH. A drum 23 is secured to the shaft 12, outwardly of the cross bars 7. lower end of the rack bar 26 is connectedto the closed upper end of a hollow piston rod 27 provided'with a coupling 28 havinga lateral spout 29 to which is connected a flexible tube 30 located in the well 1 and connected at its outer end to a fixed outlet pipe The lower end of the hollow piston rod 27' is secured in an inverted, cup-shaped cap 32 forming part of a piston 33', there being piston 33, at the lower end of the hollow piston rod 27. p r I The piston 33 is mounted for vertical reciprocation in a cylinder 35, having a check valve 36 at its lower end, the check valve being disposed at the upper end of a pipe '37 secured in the lower end of the cylinder 35. On the lower end of the pipe 37 there is a strainer 38, the upper portion of the strainer being imperforate, and the lower. portion of the strainer being perforated.
An upwardly opening check valve 39 is mounted in the strainer, and islocatedbetween'the perforate and imperforate portions of the strainer, asFigure 1 will show.
, The device comprises a hanger, including with the frame 4. The rods 42 carry a horia downwardly closing check valve 34 in the b zontal guide 43 in which the hollow piston rod 27 slides, and the coupling 28 is located between the guide 43 and the plate 41. If desired, a vent 44 may be formed in the upper end of the cylinder 35.
In practical operation, the operator rotates the shaft 20 by means of the crank 22, and rotation is imparted to the main shaft 12 through the instrumentality of the pin-- i'on19 and the gear wheel 18. ,VVhen rotation is imparted to the main shaft 12, as aforesaid, the drum-23 is rotated, the flexible element 24 being wound about the drum, and the weights being raised. By the rotation of the shaft 12, rotation is imparted to the pinion 17, and the rack bar 26 is raised, carrying with it the hollow piston rod 27 and the piston 33. Water enters the lower portionof the cylinder 35, by way of the pipe 37 andcthe strainer 38. The cylinder 35 now is fullof water, below the piston 33. A faucet (not shown) at the outlet end of the pipe 31 being closed, the parts will remain inthe condition stated, until the faucet is opened. When the faucet is opened, the weights 25 and the flexible elements 24 rotate with'the drum 23, and rotation is impartedto the main shaft 12. 'When the main shaft 12 is rotated, the pinion 17 forces the rack bar 26, the hollow piston rod 27, and the piston 33 downwardly, the check forced upwardly through the hollow piston rod 27, the coupling 28, the spout 29, the
tube 30, and. the pipe 31, so long as the faucet is open, or until the supply of water in the cylinder 35, below the piston 33, is depleted.
