This invention relates generally to Window construction and refers more particularly to windows of the type having laterally spaced openings therein separated by a dividing frame bar on the window frame and havlng swinging sashes or ventilatorsfor the openings arranged with the swinging edges thereof adjacent each other for engagement wlth the dividing bar.
The invention concerns itself still more particularly with a window of the foregoing charatcer wherein latch mechanism is employed on the dividing bar of the window frame for latching one or both of the ventilators in closed position and wherein separate actuators are provided for Operating each ventilator.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to provide improved means for screening a window of the general type specified above which, in addition to providing for obtaining a more durable construction, is capable of being expediently assembled with or removed from the window.
Another advantageous feature of this invention is to provide a window construction having separate or individual screens, for the openings therein mounted thereon in such a manner as to form a compact unitary construction therewith, and in addition so arranged as to permit unobstructed manipulation of the latch and operator mechanisms hereinbefore set forth.
The foregoing as well as other objects will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an inside elevational view of a window constructed in accordance with this invention;

For the purpose of illustration, I have shown my invention as applied to a easement window of the all-metal type comprising a frame 10 having top, bottom and side bars l1, 12 and 13, respectively, and having laterally spaced window openings 14 and 15 therein. In the present instance, the window openings 14 and 15 are separated by a centrally arranged dividing bar 16 forming a part of the frame and extending between the top and bottom bars 11 and 12 thereof. The dividing bar 16 simulates an I-beam in crosssectional area or in other words, is provided with a web portion 17 extending at substantially right angles to the plane of the frame and terminating at its outer and inner edges in laterally projecting oppositely extending flanges 18 and 19, respectively.
The openings 14 and 15 are adapted to be closed .by a pair of swinging ventilators 20 and 21 hingedly connected in any suitable manner to the side bars 13 of the frame and having the free or swinging edges thereof arranged adjacent each other'for engagement with the marginal edge portions of the flanges 18 and 19 when the ventilators are in their closed position as shown in Figure 3. For actuating the ventilators 2O and 21, I provide individual operating mechanisms 22 and23, respectively. The operating mechanisms provided for actuating the ventilators are not shown in detail herein since they may be of any suitable design capable ofbeing attached to the lower bar 12 of the frame and connected to the ventilators for moving the latter to, and for maintaining the same in their various adjusted positions. y
For latching each or both of the ventilators in their closed position, I provide a single latch mechanism 24 supported by the dividing bar 16 and having a handle 25 located upon the inner side of the window for convenient manipulation. The handle 25 is secured to a suitable shaft 26 which in turn is suitably j ournaled upon the inner side of the dividing bar 16 and has secured thereto a cam 27. The cam 27 is shaft 26 inwardly from t e inner side of the dividing bar 16 and cooperates with suitable keepers 28 and 29 secured respectively to the ventilators 20 and 21 for latching either or both of the latter in their closed positions.
In detail, the keepers 28 and 29 are secured shown in Fi ure 2 by the handle 25. It will be obvious t at when the cam is in engagement with the slots 31 in both of the keepers, swinging movement of the ventilators will be prevented. It will also be apparent from Figure 2 that the cam 27 is of such configuration that when the same is rotated through an arc of approximately 90 from the position illustrated in the above figure, one or the other of said ventilators are released depending upon the direction of rotation of the cam. In other words, the cam 27 is segmental in elevation having a substantially Hat side 32 so positioned withV respect to the axis of rotation of the cam that when the latter is rotated to position the flat side opposite the ventilator 20, for example, the cam will be released from the keeper 28 permitting the lat- -ter Ventilator to be moved by the operating mechanism 22. In the same manner, movement of the latch handle 25 to` position the straight side of the cam opposite the other ventilator 21 will release the cam from the keeper 29 and thereby permit the ventilator 21 to be moved to its open position.
As previously stated, it is one of the objects of this invention to provide practical and efficient screening for windows of the above type. The foregoing is accomplished in the present instance by providing two separate and independent screens 33 and 34 for the window openings 14 and 15, respectively. The screens are arranged upon the inner sides of the window and are of such dimension to extend completely over the openings 14 and 15. The side bars of the screens are preferably tubular in cross-sectional area and the adjacent side bars 35 of the screens are adapted to embrace the inner marginal edge portions of the inner fianges 19 on the dividing bar 16.
As pointed out in the preceding description, the cam 27 is supported inwardly from the dividing bar and the keepers on the ventilators are adapted to assume positions opposite the cam for engagement thereby. Thus, in order to provide for actuation of the latch mechanism without interfering in any way with the screen, portions of the outer sides of the screen bars 35 are slotted as at 36 to receive the offset portions 30 on the keepers and portions of the adjacent sides of the screen bars are slotted as at 37 for receiving the cam 27 to permit the same to be engaged within the slots 31 in the keepers. The foregoing arrangement is such that the latch olperatin mechanism assumes a position upon t e divi ing bar 16 of the window intermediate the adjacent side bars of the separate screens 33 and 34 for the ventilator openings in the window and also that the aforesaid bars of the screens are slotted to receive portions of the latching mechanism when the ventilators are in their closed positions.
While any suitable means may be employed for supporting the screens 33 and 34 in position upon a window, nevertheless, for the purpose of illustration, I have shown the screens as supported at their lower ends upon the ventilator operating mechanisms 22 and 23. The upper bars of the screens may be maintained in engagement with the adjacent bar of the window by means of suitable clips 38 carried by the upper frame bar and movable over the upper bar of the screen.
In Figure 4, I have shown a slightly modified form of construction differing principally from the above embodiment in that the latch mechanism including the cam and keepers is located laterally between the inner and outer flanges 39 and 40 on the dividing bar 41, thereby rendering it unnecessary to recess or otherwise fashion the adjacent bars of the screens for accomodating portions of the latch mechanism. In detail, the inner side of the dividing bar is provided with an opening 42 and the web portion of the dividing bar is suitably slotted for receiving a rockshaft 43 having a portion 44 extending inwardly beyond the inner surface of the bar between the screens 45 and 46 for receiving a suitable operating handle 47. The shaft 43 is journaled in a suitable bearing 48 carried by a bracket 49 secured in any suitable manner to the dividing bar intermediate the flanges 39 and 40. Fixed to the shaft 43 and extending transversely through the cut away portion in the web of the dividing bar is a cam 50 adapted to engage keepers 51 fixed to the adjacent edges of the ventilators 52 intermediate the inner and outer sides thereof as clearly shown in Figure 4. The cam 50 may be of the same configuration as the cam 27 hereinbefore described so as to function to latch either or both of the ventilators in their closed position. A suitable spring friction washer 53 may be provided between the cam and adjacent surface of the bracket 49 so as to permit restricted axial movement of the shaft and thereby provide for obtaining an intimate engagement between the cooperating engaging portions of the ventilator and dividing bar. With the above construction, it will be apparent that the adjacent side bars of the screens may be engaged with the inner surfaces of the anges 39 of the dividing bar without interference with the latch mechanism and without the necessity of slotings 57 arranged in alignment with corresponding openings 58 in the inner side of the dividing bar upon opposite sides of the web portion 57 of the latter. The two pairs of aligned openings 57 and 58 are adapted to receive suitable. rockshafts 59 having portions projecting inwardly beyond the mounting plate to provide for securing the operating handles 6() thereto andhaving other portions extending outwardly beyond the vinner side of the dividing bar for engagement with suitable flanges 6l on the ventilators 62.' As
will be observed from Figure 6, the flanges 61 extend toward each other andare provided with inclined surfaces 63 for engagement w ith the corresponding cam faces 64 formed on the outer ends of the shafts 59. With the above construction, the usual keepers hereinbefore set forth may be eliminated since parts of the ventilators are utilized instead.
As shown particularly in Figure 6, the adjacent bars 65 of the screens 66 are adapted to embrace the inner marginal edge portions of the dividing bar in the same manner as in the above-described form of the invention except that the adjacent edges of the screen bars 65 are recessed as at 67 opposite the mounting plate 55 so as to provide sulicient clearance therefor.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A window construction comprising a 'i frame having a pair of window openings therein, an outwardly swinging ventilator for each opening, a separate screen for each opening positioned upon the inner side of the frame, and means for latching both of the ventilators in closed position including a single latch mechanism supportedupon the frame intermediate the adjacent edges of the screens.
2. A window construction comprising a l frame having a vdividing bar and having an opening on opposite sides of the bar, a swinging ventilator for each opening mounted upon the frame with the free edges thereof adjacent each other and engageable Withthe dividing bar, an individual screen for each' opening having adjacent sides thereof spaced laterally from each other and abutting the dividing bar, and means for latching the ventilators in closed position against the bar including latch` mechanism supported upon the bar` intermediate the adjacent edges aforesaid ofthe screens.
3. A window construction com rising a frame having laterally spaced win ow openings and havinga dividing bar intermediate said openings, a'ventilator for each of said openings pivotally mounted on said frame for outward swinging movement and arranged with the swinging edges thereof adjacent each other for -engagement; with the outer sides of opposite marginal edge portions of said dividing bar, individual screens for said openings positioned upon the inner sides of the frame with the adjacent edges thereof spaced from each other and overlapping the inner sides of the marginal edge portions aforesaid of the bar, and latch mechanism supported upon said bar intermediate the adjacent edge portions of the screen and operable to latch eitherA or both of said ventilators in closed position.
4. A window construction comprising a frame having laterally spaced window openings and having a dividing bar intermediate said openings, a ventilator for each of said openings pivotally mounted on said frame for outward swinging movement and arranged with the swinging edges thereof adjacent each other for engagement with the outer sides of opposite marginal edge portions of said dividing bar, latch mechanism for said ventilators supported by the dividing bar, and individual screens for said openings positioned upon the inner sides of the frame with the adjacent edges thereof overlapping the inner sides of the marginal edge portions aforesaid of the bar and having recessed portions opposite the latch mechanism to provide sufficient clearance therefor.
5. A window construction comprising a frame having a pair of laterally spaced window openings therein and having a dividing bar intermediate said openings, an outwardly swinging ventilator for each of said openings mounted upon the frame with the swinging edges thereofpositioned adjacent each other and engageable with the outer sides y of opposite marginal edges of said dividing bar, latch mechanism for said ventilators supported by the dividing bar, and individual screens for said openings having frames positioned upon the inner side of the window frame with the adjacent side bars thereof overlapping the inner sides of the marginal edge portions aforesaid of the dividing bar upon opposite sides of the latch mechanism and having recesses in the said adjacent screen bars for receiving portions of' the latch mechanism.
6. A window construction comprising a frame having a pair oflaterally spaced window openings therein and having a dividing bar intermediate said openings, an outwardly swinging ventilator for each of said openings mounted upon the frame with the swinging edges thereof positioned adjacent each other and engageable with the outer sides of opposite marginal edges of said dividing bar, latch mechanism for said ventilators supported by the dividing bar, said latch mechanism including keepers secured to the swinging edges of the ventilators and projecting inwardly beyond the dividing bar when the ventilators are in their closed position, a locking member also suppor-ted inwardly beyond the dividing bar for engagement with the projecting portions aforesaid of vthe keepers, individual screens for the openings having frames positioned upon the inner sides of the window frame with the adjacent side bars thereof overlapping the inner sides of the marginal edge portions aforesaid of the dividing bar and having'recesses in said adjacent bars for receiving the keepers and locking member.
7. A window construction comprising a frame having a pair of laterally spaced window openings therein and having a dividing bar intermediate said openings, an outwardly swinging ventilator for each of said openings mounted upon the frame with the swinging edges thereof positioned adjacent each other and engageable with the outer sides of opposite marginal edges of said dividing bar, latch mechanism for said ventilators supported by the dividing bar, said latch mechanism including keepers secured to the swinging edges of the ventilators and projecting inwardly beyond the dividing bar when the ventilators are in their closed position, a locking member also supported inwardly beyond the dividing bar for engagement with the projecting portions aforesaid of the keepers, individual screens for said openings having frames positioned upon the inner sides of the window frame with the adjacent side bars thereof overlapping the inner sides of the marginal edge portions aforesaid of the dividing bar, said adjacent side bars having recesses in the outer walls thereof for receiving the projecting portions aforesaid of the keepers and having recesses in the adjacent edges thereof for receiving portions of the locking member to permit the same to engage said keepers.
8. A window construction comprising a frame having a pair of laterally spaced openings therein and having a dividing bar intermediate said openin s, an outwardly swinging ventilator for eac of said openings mounted upon the frame with the swinging edges thereof adjacent each other and engageable with the outer sides of opposite marginal edge portions of said dividing bar, individual screens for said openings positioned upon the inner sides of the frame with the adjacent edges thereof spaced from each other and overlapping the inner sides of the marginal edge portions aforesaid of the dividing bar, latch mechanism for latching the ventilators in closed position including keepers fixed to the swinglng edges of the'ventilators and located within the space defined by the inner and outer sides of the ventilators, a locking member rotatably supported upon the dividing bar intermediate the inner and outer sides thereof for engagement with the keepers, and means for rotating the locking member extending inwardly beyond the dividing bar between the adjacent edges of the screens.
9. A window construction comprising a frame having a pair of laterally spaced window openings therein and having a dividing bar intermediate the openings, an outwardly swinging ventilator for each of said openings mounted upon the window frame with the swinging edges thereof adjacent each other and engageable with the outer sides of the opposite marginal edge portions of said dividing bar, independent latching mechanism for each of said ventilators supported upon the dividing bar, and individual screens for said openings positioned upon the inner sides of the frame with the adjacent edges thereof overlapping the inner sides of the marginal edge portions aforesaid of the dividing bar and having recessed portions opposite the individual latch mechanisms providing clearance for the latter.
