Description
March 28, s TEBEAU TOY ANIMATION PICTURE DEVICE Filed March 2, 1931 aaaaaz 1 N V EN TOR. 5/77.: 7255/ 0 Patented Mar. 28, 1933 UNITED STATES SILAS B. TEBEAU, OF EAST DETROIT, MICHIGAN TOY ANIMATION PICTURE DEVICE Application filed March 2, 1931. Serial No. 519,371.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a toy animation picture device, and has for its object the provision of a toy of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, durable and entertaining and amusing.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a housing or drum having a pair of spaced abutment members therein which will serve to engage separate rotatably mounted display members so as to present the same over a vision aperture separately to produce an efiect of a sequence of action when the rotatably mounted pictures are rotated and separately sequentially presented to view.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a ."eference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional View of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a View taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
It is intended that the device be made of light material so that it may be held in the hand while being used, and to this end I prefer to form the structure from a stamping. I provide a drum-like housing having side walls 7 and 8 which are spaced apart by the circular wall 9, one end 10 of which is turned radially inwardly and the other end 11 of which is also turned radially inwardly in spaced relation to the end 10 and of slightly greater length. A supporting spool 12 is fixedly mounted on the spindle or shaft 13 which projects through and is journaled in the side walls 7 and 8. Fixedly mounted at one end to the periphery of the spool 12 is a plurality of display members 14, each of which has on one of its faces an image 16, the images on the successive display members 14 being so associated that when viewed successively they will display a sequence of action so'that when the spool is rotated and the pic- "cures viewed in succession, the effect is a moving picture effect. In the drawing I have illustrated a spool 12 mounted so as to rotate in a clockwise direction so that as the spool is rotated, the display members 14: are successively brought into engagement with 5 the inturned end 10 which serves as a separating abutment so that as each display member 14 rides over the end 10 it will strike against the inturned end 11 which serves as a display abutment. The opening 17 in the housing is covered by the shield 18 into which the user may look while the spool is being rotated. In this way the picturesare successively separately brought into the field of vision and the desired effect of sequential action is produced.
To rotate the spool 12, I have fixedly mounted on the spindle 13 a crank 19 and a handle 20 serves to support the housing. A covering 21 is illustrated as covering the housing and handle, this covering being of cloth, leather, paper or any other desirable material.
The device as illustrated is one which may be very cheaply manufactured and which will lend itself admirably to the production of a cheap toy or advertising novelty in which various forms of action may be portrayed so as to produce the effect of animated pictures. I
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
. 1. A device of the class described, comprising: a drum-like housing having oppositely disposed side walls; a circular wall spacing said side walls apart; radially inturned ends on said circular wall, one of said ends being turned in a distance greater than the other; a spool in said housing; a spindle carried by said spool and journaled in the oppositely disposed side walls of said housing, one end of said spindle projecting beyond said houslot ing; a handle mounted on said projecting end for rotating said spool; a plurality of display members swingably mounted at one end to the periphery of said spool and spaced 5 around said spool, said display members being engageable successively with said inturned ends. 7 I
2. A device of the class described, comprising: a drum-like housing having oppositely disposed side walls; a circular Wall spacing said side Walls apart; radially inturned ends 7 r on said circular Wall, one of said ends being turned in a distance greater than the other; a spool in said housing; a spindle carried by said spool and journaled in the oppositely disposed side Walls of said housing, oneend of said spindle projecting beyond said housing; a handle mounted on said projecting end for rotating said spool; a plurality of display members swingably mounted at one end to the periphery of said spool and spaced around said spool, said display members being engageable successively with said inturned ends; and a shield mounted on said housing and projecting over an opening formed therein between said inturned ends. v In testimony whereof I have signed, the foregoing specification.
