My said invention relates to a design wheel and it is an object thereof to provide grooved means whereby the operation of the design wheel may be changed in much less time than has heretofore been the case. In deslgn wheels of this character inserts are ordinarlly held between two rigid pieces of metal and when the set up of the design wheel is to be changed it is necessary to remove the cover and then to put in or take out inserts as desired for the particular set up to be performed. In the present wheel a complete set of inserts is put into the Wheel and they are then moved to active or inactive posltion as desired.
Referring to the drawing, which is made a part of this application and in which s1m1lar reference characters indicate similar parts:

In the drawing reference character 10 indicates the body member of the wheel which, in the present embodiment, is shown as provided with notches at 11, these notches being inclined with reference to the axis of the wheel for the reason that the wheel of the present embodiment is such a wheel as is commonly mounted alongside a needle cylinder on an axis inclined to that of the cylinder, so that needles whose butts rest on the inserts hereinafter described will be lifted whereas the butts of the other needles engage in the notches and merely assist in rotating the wheel but are not lifted thereby. Fig. 3 shows a section of said body through the teethbetween the notches.
' In addition to the notches 11 the wheel is provided with radial slots in which inserts 12 are mounted for inward and outward moveing portion 13, a lug 14 by means of which they may be moved in and out, notches at 15 and 16 for engagement with a holding device to be described and a lug 17 adapted toengage a ledge at 18 (Fig. 3) for limiting the outward movement of the inserts.
A disk 19 of spring metal is journalled on the axle 20 of the wheel, said disk having an annular rib 21 for engaging with either one ofthe notches 15 and 16. The axle '20 extends through thecenter opening of the'body 10, as shown in Fig. 2, operating with threads on a nut 22. By this means the parts are locked together and preferably a cover plate 23 is provided between the nut and the resilient disk 19 for securely clamping the disk in place and preventing undue flexing of the disk.
In the use of my device I provide the same with a full complement of inserts in every notch of'the wheel. When such a wheel is used for lifting needles all the inserts at the points where needle butts are to be engaged for lifting them are moved out into the position indicated at 24 in Fig. 1 and also shown in Fig. 2. Such inserts as are not to lift needlesare moved back to the position indicated at 25 in Fig. 1, whereby the notches in the wheel are left open for engagement by the needle butts to turn the wheel. It will be seen that no dismantling of the wheel is and has screw-threads oonecessary but that designs may bechanged very quickly by merely moving the inserts in or out in accordancewith the It will be obvious also that the principle of desired pattern. Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. In a design wheel, a body member having radially extending slots in aside face thereof, inserts in said slots movable into an outer active position or an inner inactive position, a resilient disk bearing on the inner ends of said inserts, and rigid means for holding the disk in place.
2. A device as in claim 1, said inserts hav ing notches corresponding to the two posi-- tions' thereof, and said disk having an an nular rib for engagement with either one of said notches in an insert.
