Description

March 21, 1933. I KONDQ 1,902,710
FUSE REFILLING TOOL Filed Feb. 29. 1932 Patented Mar. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES MASARU xonno, or PUUNENE, Maui, Team? or HAWAII FUSE REFILLING TOOL Application filed February 29, 1932. Serial No. 595,949.
The'object of. the invention is to provide a tool for use in connection with fuseswhere the fuse element is made replaceable, so that said element may be readily inserted. and the fuse thereby refilled; and to provide a tool of the kind indicated which is of simple form and therefore susceptible of cheap manufacture.
With this object in View, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing but to which the invention is not to be restricted further than is imposed by any limitations that may appear in the following claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section, showing the invention applied in operative position. Figure 2 is an edge elevational view of the tool.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure t is a perspective view of the bowed spring member constituting an element of the aws. J The invention is designed as a refilling tool forthe placing of a fuse, such as indicated at 10, in a shell of the character of that indicated at 11. The tool comprises pivotally connected members of which each jaw member 12 is formed as an integral part of the handle member 14, the twohandle members being normally forced away from each other by an expansion spring 15; The handle members are provided with stopmembers 16 disposed on their inner sides and when the handles are forced toward each other against the pressure of the spring 15 until the stop members 16 are in engagement, the jaw-members 12 will be properly spaced.
The jaw members 12 at their extremities are provided with the lateral extensions 17 which constitute the real fuse holding elements in conjunction with similar extensions 18 formed at the extremities of the legs 19 of a bowed spring member which is securedto the two jaws 12 by rivets 20 or other fasthus lie fiat against the jaw members 12 and tenors. The legs 19 of the bowed spring i the extensions 18 on the legs of this spring member together with the lateral extensions on the jaws constitute cooperating elements between which the legs of the fuse 21 may be inserted so that the extremities may be forced into the clips 22 and 23 of the shell.
The fusible part of the fuse 21 is the transverse portion 24, this being riveted or otherwise secured to the legs which are of relatively stiff metal.
The jaws of the tool are pivotally connected, so that their spacing may bevaried to suit variations in the spacing in the clips 22 and 23 in various fuse shells, the jaws having the widest separation when the stop members 16 engage each other. The spacing ma be reduced-by inserting a filler between t ese stop members.- 7
The handle portions of the tool are provided with insulating coverings to avoid liability of shock in the event the insertion of the fuse should be attempted without removal of the shell from the fuse block.
In the use of the invention, pressure on the handle members until the stops 16 engage will result in the proper spacing of the jaws 12 and consequently in the proper spacing of the fuse holding elements, when a fuse of the kind indicated in the drawing may have its legs slipped between the lateral extensions of the bowed'spring member and of the jaws V and the fuse then inserted. The tool may then be removed from engagement with the inserted fuse by lateral movement relative to the latter, after which releasing of the hand will permit the spreading of the handles and movement of the jaws toward each other by the operation of the spring 15.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
A tool of the kind indicated comprising pivotally connected members of which those portions on one side of the pivot constitute jaws and the remaining portions constitute 5 handles, an expansion spring connecting the handles, stops carried by the handles and engaged with each other against the action of the spring, and a bowed spring member disposed between the jaws and secured to 10 each, the legs of said member lying flat against the jaws and the latter and the spring member having lateral extensions constituting fuse'leg' engaging elements. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
