Description

March 21, 1933- A. A. JEWELL.
HOLDER FOR CONTAINERS Filed Jan. 16, 1952 Patented Mar. 21, 1933 ARCHER ALFRED JEWELL, F
oFricE PEGKHAM, LONDON, ENGLAND PATENT HOLDER FOR CONTAINERS Application filed January 16, 1932, Serial No. 587,138, and in Great Britain February 2, 1981.
My invention relates to holders for milkdelivery bottles and like containers.
In the delivery of milk, for example it is the usual practice to deposit the containers on door-steps or pavements where they generally remain for a considerable time before being collected by the users, so that the contents are liable to be contaminated by dust, rain or by the attentions of animals.
The object of my invention is t o provide a form of holder for milk-delivery bottles and other containers by means of which, contamination of the contents from the above causes, is obviated.
My invention consists in the novel combination of parts set forth in the appended claims.
Referring now to the accompanying draw- 1110 Figure 1 shows an elevation of a holder for a milk-delivery bottle, constructed according to my invention. 1
Figure 2 shows the relative position of the parts of the holder illustrated in Figure 1,
when the milk-delivery bottle is being inserted therein or being withdrawn therefrom.
Figure 3 shows a section through the line, IIIIII, on Figure 2.
Figure 4 shows an elevation of a supporting member for accommodatlng a number of milk-delivery bottles.
In carrying my invention into effect, according to one form, and as applied by way of example to a milk-delivery bottle, I provied a screw, 2, Figures 1 and 2, having at one of its ends a thread, 3, the other end of the screw being bent into the form of a ring,
4. The screw, 2, is adapted to be screwed into a door-post or shutter, or it may be into a plugged hole in a brick or stone wall, at the desired height from the ground.
From the ring, 4, jaws, 5 and 5a, are suspended by links, 6, the jaws, 5 and 5a, being pivoted together on the pm, 7.
To the jaw, 5a, the disc, 8, Figures 1, 2 and 3, is attached by welding brazing or soldering, and this disc is provided with a slot, 9, for the accommodation of the jaw, 5, when 5 the jaws are in the closed position. The jaws,
5 and 5a, are formed with recesses, 10, for ac- V delivery bottles and at commodating the protuberance, 11, formed on the neck of the milk-delivery bottle, 12.
On the lower ends of the jaws, 5 and 5a, gripping. members, 13, are secured by welding, brazing or soldering, the inner faces, 14, Figure 2, of the gripping members being curved to correspond to the neck of the milkdelivery bottle. I
In Figure 1, the milk-delivery bottle is shown suspended from the holder, while in Figure :2, the relative position of the parts is illustrated when the milk-delivery bottle is being inserted in the holder or being withdrawntherefrom. When the milk-delivery bottle is inserted between the jaws, 5 and 5a, the jaws close by their own weight so that the gripping members, 13, engage underneath the protuberance, 11, on the neck of the bottle,12, while the weight of the bottle acting on thegripping members, 13, assists in maintaining the jaws in the closed position.
When the milk-delivery bottle is suspended in the holder, as shown in Figure '1, the disc,
8, covers the mouthof the bottle and'prevents dust or rain lodging on the paper disc which is generally used to seal the bottle.
In Figure 4, alsupporting member is illustrated for anumber of milk-delivery bottle holders of the type above described. In this M figure, the base, l5, is provided with holes, 16, for attaching the supporting member by means of screws to the door-post, shutter or wall. The arm, 17, is provided with a number of semi-circular slots, 18, corresponding to the number of holdersto'beacoommodated. lVith the slots, 18, the links, 6, of the holders engage as shown.
By means of my invention, a holder fora mi'lk delivery'bottleis provided, the arrangementof the holder being such as to permit the bottle to be readily inserted therein and withdrawn therefrom and also to prevent the ingress of dust, rain :or other foreign matter to the mouth of the bottle. Further the holder or holders may be suspended above the ground at such a height as will permit the ready insertion and withdrawal of the milk the same time prevent the bottles being subjected to undesirable attentions of animals.
Although I have described my invention as applied by way of example to a holder for milk-delivery bottles, its use is not limited to this application, as it may be appliedto other types of containers.
indications may be made in the examples of my invention hereinbefore described without departing beyond the scope of the invention as defined in the claims appended hereto.
I claim 2- l r 1. A holder for containers, comprising a support, a pair of crossed levers pivoted together intermediate their ends, grips at the lower ends of said levers, links connecting the upper ends ofthe levers with the support, and a closure for the mouth of the container carried by one of the levers.
2. A holder for containers, comprising a support having an eye, crossed levers pivoted together intermediate their ends, links connecting the upper ends of the levers and the eye of the support, laterally extending gripping members at the lower ends of the levers, and one of said levers having a closure rigidly attached thereto for closing the mouth of the container. 7
3. A holder for containers, comprising a support, crossed levers pivoted together intermediate their ends, links connecting the upper ends ofthe levers with the support, laterally extending gripping members at the lower ends of the levers, and one of the levers having a closure rigidly attached thereto, said closure contacting with the opposite lever to thereby limit the movement of the levers in one direction.
4. A holder for containers, comprising a air of crossed levers pivoted together intermediate their ends, grips at the lower ends I of the levers, a closure secured to one of the levers above and spaced from the grips, said closure having a notch on its edge for the reception of the companion lever when the grips are in closed position, and means for flexibly supporting the levers.
5. A holder for containers, comprising a pair of levers pivoted together with their inner edges shaped to engage a flange on a container, laterally and inwardly extended grips at the lower ends of the levers, the inner edges shaped to engage the container, a'closure carried by one of the levers to cover the mouth of the container when the grips are engaged with said container, and means for supporting the levers.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ARCHER ALFRED JEWELL.
