reclining chair backs, andv other devices and appurtenances with which the invention may be combined or to 'which it may be applied.
No attempt is made to show the many various 0 uses to which the principles of this invention are adaptable,`but the illustrations are confined to several modifications of the invention shown in drawing table vide novel, adj us connection n withv a draftman s of table leaf extension. The invention has among its objects to protable, frictional supports which shall be simple in construction and susceptible to comparatively quick andpositive operation.

A double forked vfriction bar 5l is hingedly supported on the pin 50 between the ears 52A of the bracket 52 which is rigidly supported on the face 53 of the apparatus ordevicewith which the hinged extension is used.
The double forked friction bar comprises a pair of spaced parallely disposed forks 51A, the free ends of which extend into'the openings 4above the shelve 49D and 49E, thus limiting the up and down movement of same.
A substantially L-shaped gripping member 54 is provided which comprises a normally operable vertical armv 54A disposed between the spaced forks 5lA and having enlarged upper and lower ends with laterally extending friction teeth 54B and 54C adapted to respectively engage upper and lower faces of each fork 51A. The arm 54A is further provided with integral lugs 54D of' rectangular cross section extending laterally from an intermediate portion of the arms-54 and on both sides thereofto provide apair of additional friction teeth for engagement between the blades of the forks 51A. The integral laterally extending arm 54E is pivotally connected with a link 55 which is pivoted on the pin 56 within the ears cast integrally vwith the lower end of the bracket 52. Y l f The upper end of the arm 54E is of sufficient height to clear the under face of the section 49A when the forks are in lateral position, so that when the extension 48 is raised to lateral position, as shown in the illustrations, the unwill rest upon the head of the arm 5.4A and will exert downward v pressure thereon tending to lift the hinged end of the arm 54E and will thereby cause a frictional engagement of the teeth 54B, 54C and 54D w'ith the forks 51A. f
In Fig.` 2, the dotted lines indicate the retaining position of the link 55, grip'54," and forks 51A; the yfull lines indicate the released position of same.
Referring now to the illustrationsin Figs. 3, "4 and 115, the hinged-member 57 islrigidly only necessary to slightly raise mounted to the top of the member 58 of inverted U cross section having an integral cross shelf 58A connecting the outer end of the vertical legs thereof.
A bracket 59 is rigidly supported below the movable member 57 and is provided with a pair of integral ears 59A for the pin 60 about which is pivotally mounted thefriction plate 61, the vertical movement of which is conlined betwen the lateral portion. of the member 58 and the cross shelf 58A. Y
A pair of links 62 is pivotally supported at their lower ends on the pin 63 heldin the bracket 59. The upper ends of .the links 62 are pivotally connected with the pin 64e held within the inner end of grip 65 which is pivotally supported on the pin 66. The outer end of the grip 65 is provided at its lower end with a tooth 65A adapted to frictionally engage upon the upper face of the friction plate 6l. A second frictional grip 67 of substantially inverted U cross section, is pivotally mounted on the pin 56 in a manner to present the upper lateralportion 67A as a frictional bearing against the inner face of the lateralL portion of the member 58; the vertical ,legs 67B being disposed at the sides of the grip 65 for-pivotal support on the pin 66.
A third grip 68 cross section is provided, the vertical legs 68A of which are pivotally. suspended from the ends of the pin 66. The lateral portion GSB is formed with an integral tooth 68C projected forwardly andlocated to fall substantially below the tooth 65A and to frictionally engage the under side of the plate 6l.
The member 57 in this instance will be autoin lateral posi-V matically securely retainedv the underside of tion by the friction `between the lateral portion and between the tooth 65A and the upper face of plate 6l, and between the lower face of plate 61 and the tooth 68C. To release the frictional retainment of the member 57 it is the members 57, as for instance, to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. gripping positions of the members 65A, and 68C will be displaced to permit a free sliding action of same on plate 6l to afford the lowering of the member 57 about the pivotal pin 60.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A device for hingedly mounted member in adjustably varying angular positions, comprising an element movable with an connected to said member, saidelement vhaving an odset portion spaced from the face of said member, a
frictional grip comprising an arm having anV opening in one end thereof through which said offset portion of said element extends for frictional engagement, a pivot pin in the of substantially U- shaped 58B and the section 67A 5, whereupon the relative frictionally retaining a other end of said arm, a link connected with said pivot pin at one end thereof, and a stationary support for the other end of said link.
2. A device for frictionallyr retainin a hingedly mounted member in adjustagbly varying positions, comprising a hingedly mounted element movable with said member, and having` a free limited movement independent of said member, said element comprising a pair of spaced forked sections, an arm adapted to frictionally engage said pair of forked sections along different points thereonto frictionally retain said member in adjustably varying angular positions, said arm having integral'teeth fory frictionally engaging the inner, upper and. lower faces of said forked sections, a link connecting one end of said arm', and a stationary support for the other end of said link, said stationary support pivotally supporting said member and said element.
3. A device for frictionally retaining a hingedly mounted member in adjustably varying angular positions, comprising a hingedly mounted element movablerelatively to said member, independent of said member, said element comprising a plate hingedly mounted at one end thereof, an inverted U-shaped member connectedpto said hingedly mounted member, t
said pivotally mounted member and said element and. said; inverted U-shaped member having an identical pivotal axis, a frictional grip comprising a friction shoev adapted to move between the lowerface of said U-shaped member, a frictional grip arm pivotally mounted onrsaid shoe above said plate element, and having means for frictionally engaging the upper face of said plate element, a link connecting one end of said grip arm, a stationary support for the other end of said link, and a U-shaped frictional grip also pivotally supported upon the same pivotal support of said arm and adapted to frictionally engage upon the lower face of said plate element.
4. VA device as embodied in claim 3, and including said stationary support comprising a bracket having pivotal means for pivotally supporting said pivotally mounted member and said plate element and 'said in verted U-shaped member.
5. A device as embodied in claim 3, andincluding said friction shoe comprising a plate of inverted U-shaped cross section wherein the parallel downwardly disposed portions provide pivotal supports for said frictional grip arm and said U-shaped frictional grip.
