Description
BLOW- OUT PREVENTER Filed Dec. 14, 1951 Patented Mar. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE An'rmm J. PENICK am: may '1'. minors, or nous'ron, 'rnxas BMW-OUT PREV Application Med December 14, 1881. flerial'llo. 580,846.
This invention relates to a blowout preventer, and is of the same general type as that disclosed in .our a plication for patent on blowout preventer led in United States Pat- 5 ent Ofiice on September 21, 1931, under Serial An object of the invention is to provide a head adapted to be attached to a tubing or other outer pipe in a well bore, and having aslipbowl in combination with a novel type of slip adapted to be seated and secured in said bowl around an inner pipe and provided with a sealing means to prevent the escape of fluid from the well between the slip and bowl or between the slip and inner pipe or-tubing said slip having means for adjusting the same so that in case a leak develops the slip may be adjusted, or expanded so as to form a tight fit to prevent any leakage of fluid therearound or therethrough.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a blowout preventer a novel type of slip having a supporting metal wear ring and packing depending from said ring and formed of rubber or similar material and having annular lips which fit closely against the walls of the slip bowl and against the inner pipe to form fluid tight joints therewith and eing provided with means for expanding said acking in case of necessity to maintain said oints fluid tight; With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the slip, and Figure 2 shows a vertical sectional view of the assembled blowout preventer asmounted on a pipe in a well. I
Referrin now more partciularly to the drawing w erein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures,
the numeral 1 designates a casing or other pipe in a well bore and the numeral 2 designates a head thereon having an upwardly flared slip bowl 3. Seated in this bowl are the slips presently to be described. These slips having the top wear ring formed of the bowl 3 and so surround a tubing or other inner pipe 9, the lip 7 fitting closely against the inner wall or seat of the bowl and the lip 8 seat$i)ng closely around the inner tubing or P p The under face of the wear ring and the upper end of the bowl 3 have the corresponding annular beveled faces 10, 11, which fit glOSilY together when the slip is seated in the The sections 4 have the pairs of marginal ears 12, 12 between which the depending dogs 13 are hinged and these dogs are adapted to engage with the annular external shoulder 14 around the bowl.
In case a blow out is threatened the slips may be opened and fitted around the inner pipe 9 and latched thereon by means of a latch as 15 and the inner pipe then lowered. The slips will land on the bowl 3 with the sections 4, 4 of the wear ring resting on the top of the bowl and the beveled lower ends 16, 16 of the dogs 13 will strike the top of the bowl and said dogs will be spread and will pass over and engage underneath the shoulder 14 and the slips will thereby be held securely in place. A collar as 17 of the pipe 9 will land on the slips and will form additional means for forcing the slips into and holding the slips in the bowl.
The internal pressure in thewell against the lower end of the packing will spread the lips 7, 8 and force them tightl against the bowl and inner pipe and form uid tightjoints therewith. The head 2 is equipped with the usual flow lines 18 beneath the slips through which the pressure fluid in the well may be drawn off.
In case a leak should develop between the packing of the slips and the bowl or the 5 panders 19 are provided, about which the material of the packing is moulded, and extending upwardly from these expanders are the rods 20 which extend up through bearings in the wear ring and whose upper ends are outwardly threaded to receive the nuts 21. In case a leak develops the nuts 21 may be tightened up and the expanders 19 thus pulled upwardly so as to clamp the packing material between the expanders and the wear ring sections and to thus cause an expansion of the packing so as to force the packing to seat closely against the bowl 3 and the pipe 9all the way around to close any space that might develop to permit leakage.
The drawings and description disclose what is now considered to be a preferred form of the invention by way of illustration only while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.

6. In combination, a tubular head having a slip bowl and shaped to receive an inner pipe therethrough, a slip having a top wear ring and a packing depending from said wear ring and shaped to surround said ipe, said packing having annular lips, one tted closely within the bowl and the other fitting closely around said inner pipe, rigid expanding means within the packing, means for adjusting said expanding means relative to the wear ring to control the lateral expansion of the packing, and releasable means for holding the slip against detachment from the bowl.
7. In a blowout preventer a slip formed with a sectional top Wear ring, a packer depending from said wear ring and formed of sections, rigid expanders within the packing sections and means connected with said wear ring for adjusting said expand-ers relative to the wear ring to control the lateral expansion of the packer.
8. A slii having a top wear ring and annular pac ing dependin a rigid expander within tlie packing, an adjusting rod attached to the expander and extending through said packing and Wear ring and means on the wear ring connected to the rod for adjusting said rod and expander.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification. v
