This invention relates to an improvement in pumping apparatus, and more particularly in an apparatus of the ty e and kind shown and described in the app ication for patent filed by me on the 14th day of May, 1929, Se-
rial No. 363,027, which is especially designed to pump and deliver gasoline or'other liquids from a main source of supply to a measuring dispensing device. Thus the present apparatus includes a rotary pump mounted to rotate in a horizontal plane and driven by an electric motor supported upon a unitary part of the pump to provide a-compact operating unit w ich may be readily installed in an upright position within a small space and readily ta en apart for inspection and repairs. In this assembly of parts the pump itself is particularly arranged and constructed to trap and remain full of li uid when not operating so that the pump Wlll not drain or run dry but be constantly primed and kept in good condition for instant use even after protracted periods of non-use. The structure is also so divided and arranged that the pumpin parts may be readily reached and *remove without dismantling the motor and drivin means or detaching the entire pump from t e main supporting frame for the ap-' paratus. Other advantages features of construction and useful arrangements of the operating parts also reside in the apparatus as will hereinafter appear and as more concisely set forth in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings.
Thus, in the preferred embodiment of the invention shown in thedrawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of dispensing cabinet in which the apparatus may be housed, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the pumping unit itself on a larger scale and removed from. the cabinet. Fig. 3 is a top view of the pump on a still larger scale, this view being taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 4. Fig.

Fig. 7 is a sectional view horizontally through the mid-- dle part of the pump on line 77-of Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a sectional View of the intake part for the pump, this view being also taken on line 7 7 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 9 is a side view of the lower part of the frame and the pump,
and a sectional view of the intake extension which projects downwardly from one side of on line 9-9 0 Fig. 6. Fig. lOis an enlarged sectional View of the head of the by-pass valve.
In Fig. 1 I show an upright dispensing cabinet A in which the present operating unit may be installed. The form and construction of this cabinet may vary greatly, but the unit is especially constructed to facilitate its installation in a small space and to simplify the making of pipe connections therewith. Usually the supply pipe 2 for the unit extends to an underground supply tank, not shown, and the discharge pipe 3 is connected to a flexible hose 4 suspended from a fitting 5 at one side of the cabinet. The operating unit consists of a rotary pump B secured horizontally to the bottom of a supporting frame C upon which an electric driving motor D is mounted. Frame C is a casting having circuitous fluid passages 'o-- therein which permit the attachment of the separate supply and discharge pipes 2 and 3, respectively, directly to the frame, and the pump B is also detachably connected to this frame in communication with the fluid passages therein so that it will lie in a lower plane than certain parts of said fluid passages to always trap and hold a large charge pipes. As constructed and arranged,
the pump body'and the pumping parts therein may also be bodily detached from frame G without disconnecting the supply and discharge pipes, these pipes being connected directly to frame C, as stated. Either the complete pump'may be removed or only a part thereof as occasion may require, the
To prolnote'the foregoing purposes, frame is an open rectangular casting having an overhanging top 9 and a laterally extending bottom 10 formed with vertically-aligned openings 11 and 12, respectively. Motor D is seated removably upon top 9 with its hub 13 and motor shaft 14 extending downrotate.
wardly through opening 11, and the closure plate 7 of pump B is provided with a radial ly ribbed hub 15 adapted to be centered within and to extend upwardly through opening 12 to place the pump shaft 16 axially in line with the motor shaft so that the two shafts may be operatively connected together by any suitable coupling device 17. Cast integral with frame C at one side of bottom 10 is a hollow depending boss or extension 18 having an elbow-shaped entrance 19 and a horizontal flaring chamber 20 which may be said to be the intake end of circuitous passage a inasmuch as the vertical supply pipe 2 is screw connected with the bottom of this boss or extension. A cylindrical screen or strainer 21 is coniined removably within chamber 20 between a removable screw plug 22 and a flat annular seat 23 surrounding an elbow-shaped outlet 24 which also forms part of circuitous passage a-. A coiled spring 25 is interposed between the screw plug and the strainer to hold the latter yieldingly in position. Passage a extends horizontally above bottom 10 on a sweeping curve from the upwardlyextending elbow-shaped outlet 24 to a downward ly-curved port 25 formed in bottom 10, see Figs. 5 and 6, "and port 25 communicates with a circular opening 27 in closure plate 7 opposite a corresponding intake opening 28 in the upper flat face of pump body 6. Plate 7 is also provided with a second circular opening 29 adapted to .register with an outlet opening 30 in the top of pump body 6, and bottom 10 of casting C includes an elbow portion 31 containing a discharge duct 32 which is a continuation of circuitous passage -aiwhen the parts are assembled with duct 32 in communication with opening 29 in plate 7 and outlet opening 30, in body 6. An elbow fitting 33 is' bolted to the side of frame C opposite the discharge duct 32 to permit the vertical discharge pipe 3 to be connected thereto. Body 6 of the pump has a flat top and bottom, and a circular chamber 35 extends vertically through the body at one side thereof, which chamber is divided by a central wall or ring-shaped partition 36 to provide two working spaces within which a pair of round istons 37 and38 are adapted to T ese pistons are mounted eccentrically in balanced relation on shaft 16, which rotates in. suitable bearings in bosses or extensions on the closure plates 7 and 39, for body 6. Separate inlet and outlet ducts 40 and 41,
the longitudinal medial line of body 6 and communicate with the separate working spaces above and below partition 36 which has an extension 42 in the form of a keyshaped bar adapted to interlock with the partition. Extension bar 42 occupies a centrol position within a cross slot 43 in body 6, which slot is open to both piston chambers or spaces in body 6.
A pair of fiat abutment blades or plates 44 and 45, respectively, are slidably seated in slot 43 above and below the dividing bar 42, and the innerends of these blades project into the working spaces and have riding contact with the peripheral surfaces'of the eccentric pistons, thereby separating the inlet and outlet ducts completely where they communicate with the working spaces.
The blades 44 and 45, are controlled and held in their proper working relations by a rocking lever 46 and a compression spring 47 which is interposed between a supporting plunger 48 and an adjustable sealing nut 49 seated within body 6 at one side of a transverse by-pass passage 50 therein. Plunger 48 is a cylindrical piece free to reciprocate in a round bore in body 2, and spring 47 is seated within a recess in one end of this plunger, while its opposite end is bifurcated to receive the flat-sided rocking lever 46. An axial passage 51 in the plunger permits the fluid under pressure in compartment 52 to pass into the space beneath nut 49 so as to equalize the pressure on this part, and the bifurcated portions of the plunger are grooved transversely to receive and rest astride aishort trunnion or pivot shaft 53 located mid-length of rocking lever 46,
thereby positioning this lever centrally in respect to the slidable blades so that the rounded ends 54 thereof may bear against the smooth flat outer edges of said blades. The rocking lever 46 extends lengthwise of a slot 55 in the middle wall in body 6, thereby keep- 1 ing it aligned with both blades 44 and 45. By-pass passage 50 communicates with corresponding ends of the inlet and outlet ducts 40 and 41 and contains a beveled valve seat 56 against which a beveled valve 57 is pressed normally by a spring 58. This valve opens automatically and permits the fluid to circulate through the pump should the discharge be checked or cut-off while the pump is running. To prevent shattering, the beveled head of the valve is provided with a short cylindrical extension 58 adapted to enter a reduced part of the assage in advance of the beveled seat, w ile the main body of the valve conforms closely in dialne'ter to a shallow counterbore 59 surrounding the beveled seat, whereby a small amount of liquid may be trapped in the counterbore when the valve closes, thus cushioning the valve as it seats. A large screw plug 60 closes a side entrance to by-pass passage 50 opposite nut 49 so that this nut may be reached from the outside and removed in as sembling and dis-assembling operations.
What I claim is:
1. A pumping apparatus, including an open frame adapted to be attached toa support, parallel perforated shelves extending laterally from said frame, a motor mounted upon the top shelf having its shaft extending downwardly through the perforation of the top shelf, a rotary pump, a cover plate for said pump provided with a radially ribbed hub for the shaft of the pump attached to the bottom shelf of said frame with said hub portion extending through the perforation of said bottom shelf for centering the shaft of said pump with respect to said bottom shelf, a coupling member connectin said shafts, circuitous fluid passages in sald bottom shelf extending substantially above the top surface thereof and terminating in its bottom face, and intake and dischar e passages for said pump arranged in sai cover plate below said bottom shelf and communieating with-said circuitous fluid passages to trap a body of liquid within said pump between the inlet and discharge passages thereof.
2. A pumping apparatus according to claim 1, wherein one of the circuitous passages of said bottom shelf is downwardly extended and includes a seat for a removable strainer.
