This invention relates in general to hoisting engines, and more particularly to a hoisting engine of the type including an electric motor or a gasoline motor instead of the usual steam engine and driving gear.
In hoisting engines of this character, for
example as shown in Patent No. 1,727,724,
chain and sprocket connection of the motor to the drum driving shaft, and permit of a i v winch being applied to the end of the drum shaft as usual. The result of this has been that the protruding end-of the shaft has been too weak to effectually withstand the strains applied to the winch. Furthermore, in hoisting engines of this character the chain and sprocket drive mechanism has been disposed outside of the frame and .bearings of. the engine so as to occupy a conslderable amount of space'and project from the frame in such 1 a manner as to hinder movement of the frame and be exposed to blows from other objects or machines.
One object of my invention is to provide a hoisting engine of the general character described embodying a novel and improved con- 5 struction and combination of the engine frame, hoisting drum shaftsand bearings, and driving connection between the. motor and the hoisting drums, whereby a strong and compact construction shall be provided with a minimum of parts projecting beyond the frame of the engine in such a manner as to become hindrances.
Another object is to provide in such a construction' a combined frame part'and gear casing, whereby the gea'ringconnections between the motor and the hoisting drums shall be enclosed within the frame of the engine.

ings, whereby a strong bearing support for the hoisting drum shafts is provided and the winch may be mounted on the shaft in close proximity to the bearing, the gearing connection between the motor and the hoisting drums being disposed between the drums and the winch; to provide a novel and improved relative arrangement of the drum driving shaft, the drum shaft and the gearing connection betweenthe motor and the drum driving shaft, whereby the said gearing connection surrounds the drum shaft and the drum shaft passes through the gearing connection, so that a compact and strong arrangement of the parts is ensured; and to obtain other advantages and results as will be brought out by the following description. 7

1 Specifically describing the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the reference character A designates the base of the h0istin g engine which includes two parallel side pieces B upon one of which is mounted a bearing frame C having bearings D each for one hoisting drum shaft E and EE upon which are mounted hoisting drums F. On the other side of piece B is mounted a combined bearing frame and gear casing 1 for the other ends of the shafts E andEE. Mounted upon the shafts E and EEbetween the ends of the drums F and the bearing frame 1, are gears G each carrying one part H of a friction clutch which cooperates with another part I on the c p nding hQisting drum. These gears G mesh with a pinion 26 on a driving shaft 7 that is journaled in the bearing frames O and 1. The hoisting drums are slidable longitudinally of the shafts E to cause engagement and disengagement of the clutch parts H and I by known mechanisms J.
The bearing frame 1 is preferably in the form of a casting and is horizontally divided into two sections 2 and 3, the lower one of which has a gear chamber 4 therein and has formed integrally therewith the lower halves and 6 of bearings for the drum shaft E and the drum driving shaft 7 which is disposed between the drum gears G and substantially in the same horizontal plane with the drum shaft E. The other halves 8 and 9 of these hearings are bolted to the lower halves, as at 10, in the usual manner. The upper section 3 of the bearing frame is in the form of a cover which is secured to the lower section, as by bolts 12. One end of the bearing frame 1 is open and has secured thereto an auxiliary gear casing 13 formed in two sections 14; and 15 bolted to the end of the bearing frame 1 and to each other, as by bolts 16. Into the auxiliary gear casing 13 projects one end of a shaft 17 of an electric motor 18 which is mounted on the base A of the engine. A sprocket 19 is mounted on the motor shaft 17 and another sprocket 20 is mounted on the drum driving shaft 7. These sprockets are connected by a driving chain 22 which passes upon opposite sides of the drum shaft E. Obviously, instead of mounting the sprocket 19 directly on the motor shaft the sprocket might be connected to the motor by suitable gearing.
The end of the drum shaft EE opposite the bearing frame C is journaled in a bearing 23 in line with thebearing frame 1. This bearing 28 might be formed integrally with the bearing frame 1, as are the halves 5 and (3 of the bearings for the shafts E and 7, but as shown, this hearing 23 is formed in a separate casting 24 secured to the base A.
Vith this construction, it will be observed that the drum shaft E is mounted in a long bearing which extends transversely of the combined bearing frame and gear casing 1, so that a strong support for the drum shaft is provided, and the shaft need project from the bearing only a short distance to receive a winch 25 which is located closely adjacent the shaft hearing, as is desirable.
Instead of mounting the sprocket 19 directly on the shaft 17 of the motor, it may be desirable in many instances to mount a stub shaft 27 in bearings 28 in the bearing frame and gear casing 29. and connect the driving sprocket 30 to said stub shaft, as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. This stub shaft can then be connected to the shaft of the motor by a suitable known shaft coupling 31 or by additional gearings.
This construction admits of easy and quick disconnection of the motor from the chain and sprocket gearing without removal of the sprockets or chain, so that the hoisting engine without the motor can be built as a unit, and any suitable motor thereafter connected. to the stub shaft 27.
Obviously, where the auxiliary gear casing 2 9 is used as a bearing support, the gear casing will be formed with a suitable base 32 to be connected to the base A.
It will also be understood that the invention may be embodied in single drum hoisting engines as well as in multiple drum engines such as shown.- Furthermore, while I have shown and described the invention as embodied in certain details of construction, it will. be understood that this is primarily for the purpose of illustrating the principles of the invention. and that many modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction of the invention without departing from the spirit or scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a hoisting engine, the combination of a hoisting drum shaft having a drum thereon, a drum driving shaft, a driving connection between said sha s, a pair of spaced bearing frames having bearings for said shafts, one of said frames being hollow to form a gearing chamber and having elongated bearings for said shafts in the walls of and extending across said chamber, a power shaft, a sprocket on said power shaft within said gearing chamber. a second sprocket on said drum driving shaft within said gearing chamber, and a chain co-opcrating with said sprockets respectively, located within said gearing chamber and passing upon opposite sides of the bearing for said hoisting drum shaft.
2. In a hoisting engine, the combination of a hoisting drum shaft having a drum thereon. a drum driving shaft, a driving connection between said shafts, a pair of spaced bearing frames having bearings for said shafts, one of said frames being hollow to form a gearing chamber and having elongated bearings for said shafts in the walls of and extending across said chamber, a power shaft. a sprocket on said power shaft within said gearing chamber, a second sprocket on said drum driving shaft within said gearing chamber. said last named sprocket being of relatively greater diameter than said power shaft sprocket, and the bearings for said hoisting drum shaft and said driving shaft being on substantially the same horizontal plane. and a chain co-operating with said sprockets respectively, located within said gearing chamber and passing upon opposite sides of the bearing for said hoisting drum shaft.
In a hoisting engine, the combination of a base having a bearing frame at one side thereof, a hollow bearing frame at the other side thereof having elongated bearings extending across and in the walls thereof, a hoisting drum shaft mounted in bearings upon said frames and projecting beyond the elongated bearing in said hollow frame, a'
winch carried by the projecting end of said shaft closely adjacent the end of said elongated bearing, whereby bending stresses upon said shaft are avoided, a drum driving shaft mounted in bearings upon said side frames respectively, gearingpositioned between said side frames and connecting said driving shaft with said drum shaft, a power shaft, a sprocket carried thereby, a sprocket on said drum driving shaft, and a sprocket chain co-operating with said sprockets respectively, located within said gearing chamber and passing upon opposite sides of said hoisting drum shaft. 4. In a hoisting engine, the combination of a base having a bearing frame at one side thereof, a hollow bearing frame at the other side thereof comprising an upper and a lower section, and means connecting said sections to form a closed gearing chamber, said sections having co-operating elongated bearing portions extending across and in the-walls of said chamber and on substantially the same horizontal plane, a hoisting drum shaft mounted in bearings upon said frames, a drum driving shaft mounted in bearings upon said side frames respectively, gearing positioned between said side frames and connecting said driving shaft with said drum shaft, a power shaft, a sprocket carried thereby, a sprocket on said drum driving shaft, and a sprocket chain co-operating with said sprockets respectively, located Within said gearing chamber and passing upon opposite sides of said hoisting drum shaft.
5. In a hoisting engine, the combination of a base having a bearing frame at one side thereof, a hollow bearing frame at the other side thereof comprising an upper and a lower section, and means connecting said sections to form a closed gearing chamber, said sec tions having co-operating elongated bearing portions extending across and in the walls of said chamber and on substantially the same horizontal plane, a hoisting drum shaft mounted in bearings upon said frames and projecting beyond the elongated bearings in said hollow frame, a winch carried by the projecting end of said shaft closely adjacent the end of said elongated bearing, whereby bending stresses upon said shaft are avoided, a drum driving shaft mounted in bearings upon said side frames respectively, gearing positioned between said side frames and connecting said driving shaft with said drum shaft, a power shaft, a sprocket carried thereby, a sprocket on said drum driving shaft,
and a sprocket chain co-operating with said sprockets respectively, located Within said gearing chamber and passing upon opposite sides of said hoisting drum shaft.
6; In a hoisting engine, the combination of a hoisting drum shaft having a drum thereon, means whereby said drum may be selectively connected with, or disconnected from, said shaft, a drum driving shaft, a driving connection between said shafts, a pair of spaced bearing frames having bearings for said shafts, one of said frames being hollow to form a gearing chamber, and having elongated bearings for said shafts in the Walls'of and extending across said frame, a power shaft, a sprocket on said power shaft within said gearing chamber, a second sprocket on said drum driving shaft within said gearing chamber, and a chain co-operating with said sprockets respectively, located within said gearing chamber and passing upon opposite sides of the bearing for said hoisting drum shaft.
7. In a hoisting engine, the combination of a base having a bearing frame at one side thereof, and a combined bearing frame and gearing chamber at the other side thereof having a plurality of elongated bearings, some of which extend across and are in the walls of the gearing chamber portion of said frame, and another of which is positioned outside of said chamber, the bearings extending across said chamber being on substantially the same horizontal plane with each other and positioned above said other bearing, a plurality of hoisting drum shafts mounted in bearings upon said frames and projectingbeyond the elongated bearing in said combined bearing frame, a winch carried by the projecting end of each hoisting drum shaft closely adjacent the end of the elongated bearing in Which it is mounted, whereby bending stresses upon said shafts are avoided, a drum driving shaft mounted in bearings upon said side frames respectively, gearing positioned between said side frames and connecting said driving shaft with said drum shafts respectively to cause rotation of said drum shafts in the same direction, a power shaft, a sprocket carried thereby, a sprocket on said drum driving shaft, and a sprocket chain co-operating with said sprockets respectively, located within said gearing chamber and passing upon opposite sides of said hoisting drum shaft.
