This invention relates to locks. It is dirooted to the type of lock generally described in my co-pending application Serlal No. 395,783, filed September 28th, 1929,

Among the objects of this invention is to generally improve the construction of locks of this character, so as to provide a neat,
compact and rugged structure, highly practical and efficient, comprised of few and simple parts, easily and quickly assembled, and which shall yet be smooth and positive in operation and practical and efficient to a high degree. 1
Other objects of this invention 17111 in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
Certain features described in my co-pending application Serial No. 395,783, filed September 28th, 1929, including a plural ty of U-shaped bolts adapted to be moved 1nwardly toward each other simultaneously with the projection of thehor1zontal bolt,
- are shown and described, but not claimed in the present application.
With the foregoing exception, the lnvention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and
arrangement of parts which will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

The casing may be provided with any suitable means as for instance, ears 26w and 27a suitably bored for receiving screws for securing the casing to the door. Said casing 15 may be provided withany suitableguide means for slidably mounting the horizontal bolt 20. 'A rear backing plate3O removably secured to the casing in any suitable manner, is adapted to press against the inner or rear face of the bolt for retaining the same in position within the casing.
For reciprocating the said horizontal bolt 20, the front wall 25 of the casing is provided with a boss 31 bored as at 32 for rotatably receiving a knob 33. Fixedly attached to said knob 33 is one end of a crank arm 34, theopposite end of which is formed with an opening 35 for rotatably receiving one end 36 of a curved link 'or connecting member 37. The latter wardly curved as at 37a, the opposite end 38 thereof being provided with a pin 39 pivotally engaging'a suitable bearing opening in the horizontal bolt 20.

For actuation of the bolt 20 from the outside of the door, as for instance byuse of a key, the crank arm 10 is pivotally .mounted on the rear plate 30 and provided with means not shown, adapted to cooperate with a key for turning said arm. Said arm 40 is provided with a cylindrical projection or pin 41 rotatably received in the socket portion 42 integrally formed at one end of the connecting arm 37.
The casing 15 is provided with a vertical transverse, integral wall portion 45 parallel to and spaced from said end wall 28. Said end wall 28 is formed with a pair of symmetrically disposed, spaced openings 47 and 48, and said wall 45 is provided with a pair of openings 47a and 48a aligned with said openings 47 and 48 respectively. Fixed to the horizontal bolt adjacent the ends thereof, are a pair of pins or bolt portions 47 b and 48?) adapted to slidably extend thru the openings 47, 47a and 48, 48a respectively. The strike 23 is provided with a pair of members 50 and 51 formed with openings 50a and 51a adapted to receive the forward ends of said bolt portions 47 b and 48?) respectively.
Upon actuation of the knob 33 or key mechanism, the horizontal bolt 20 will be moved forwardly for projecting pins or bolt portions 47 b and 485 into engagement with said strike portions 50 and 51, respectively.
Means is provided for moving the U- shaped bolts 18 and 19 inwardly toward one another, simultaneously with the projection of the horizontal bolt portions 47 b and 48b.
To this end, said casing walls 45 and 28 are each provided with a pair of bearing openings 55, 56 respectively, said openings being preferably aligned and symmetrically disposed with respect to the mid-section of the casing and disposed inwardly of the openings 47, 48 and 47a, 48a. Extending thru the aligned openings 55 is a rod 60 having a steep pitched helical thread61 formed on the rear portion 62 thereof. Mounted on the portion 64 of said rod, disposed between said walls 28 and 45 and suitably splined to said rod portion, as for instance in the manner hereinafter described, is a small gear wheel 65 substantially abutting the end wall 28 and having a width smaller than the width of the space between said walls 28, 45. Extending from said gear wheel 65 is a hub or flange 66 adapted to contact said wall and fixed to said rod as by means of a set screw 67. It will now'be understood that the rod 60'is rotatably, but non-slidably mounted within the aligned bearing openings 55. The horizontal bolt 20 is provided with a suitable opening 70 slidably receiving the rear threaded portion of the rod. A pin 71 screwed to said bolt 20 is provided with a projection or lug 72 adapted to extend into the helical groove formed on said rod, whereby upon movement of the horizontal bolt, coaction of the are adapted to overlap and mesh with one another. Preferably integrally formed with and extending from said gear wheel 74 is a hub or flange 75 contacting said end wall 28 and fixed to said shaft as for instance, by means of a set screw 76. Sliding movement of the gear wheel 74 and stub shaft 73 is thus prevented. Said gear wheel 74 will be rotated upon actuation of the horizontal bolt 20 due to the meshing engagement with the gear wheel 65.
The casing 15 is provided with a pair of aligned oppositely extending tubular portions and 81 preferably square in crosssection adapted to slidably receive the arms 82 and 83 of said U-shaped bolts 18 and 19, respectively. The arm 82 of said bolt 18 is formed with a rack portion 84 having gear teeth 85 adapted to engage the teeth of the gear wheel 65. The rack portion 84 is substantially the width of the hub 75 and is hence disposed between the gear 74 and the end wall 28. Upon actuation of the horizontal bolt 20 the gear teeth 85 will be engaged by teeth of the gear wheel 65 for moving the bolt 18. Such movement is permitted by reason of the construction of the rack portion 84 of such width, that the same is received between the gear wheel 74 and the end wall 28, whereby said rack does not mesh with or engage said gear wheel 74. The arm 83 of the U-shaped bolt 19 is likewise provided with a rack portion 88 having a width substantially equal to the width of the hub 66 and being aligned therewith, said rack portion having teeth 89 engaging the teeth of the gear wheel 74.
Thus, the rack portion 88 may be reciprocated without interference or engagement with gear wheel 65. Upon actuation of the knob, the gear wheels 65 and 74 will'be rotated in opposite directions and hence the U-shaped bolts reciprocated in opposite direction. The direction of the helical thread 61 and rod 60 is preferably such that upon projection of the bolt portions 47?), 48?), from the casing, the U-shaped portions 18 and 19 will be moved inwardly toward one another.
The strike 23 is provided with integrally thereof 'ormed with openings 92, 93 adapted to receive the preferably square-shaped arms 90, 91 of the U-shaped portions 18 and 19 respectively.
The lock may quickly and easily be assembled or disassembled. Upon unscrewing or'removal of the set screws 67,76 and 71, the rod 60 and stub shaft 7 3 may be removed thru the end wall 28 of the casing. The
gear wheels 65 and 74 and their respective 10 hubs 66 and 7 5 may then be easily removed, thus permitting further disassembly of the bolts 18 and 19. The bolt portions 21 and 22 obviously may also be detachab-ly attached to the horizontal bolt as for instance, by forming said horizontal bolt with suitable bearing openings for receiving the inner ends of said bolt portions and providing suitable set screws for fixing said inner ends to said horizontal bolt.
In accordance with the modified construction shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, means is provided for rotating the projecting portions of the horizontal bolt at the end of the K projecting stroke for the purpose herein- 25 is provided with a pair of bearing openings 100 and 101 adjacent the opposite ends thereof, and rotatably received within said bear ing openings are parallel bolt portions 102 and 103 formed at the outer ends thereof with extensions or wings 104i and 105 respectively. Said bolt portions are furthermore formed with longitudinal slots or grooves 106 and 107, respectively, andwith annular grooves 108 and 109, respectively, communicating with said longitudinal slots 106 and 107, respectively. Each of said bolt portions 102 and 103 is furthermore formed with a pair of spaced outwardly pro ecting pins 110. It will be noted that the projections 110 on the bolt portion 102 are differently positioned longitudinally with respect thereto from the pins 110 on the bolt portion 103. Said pins 110 are so spaced on their respective bolt portions that when said bolt portions are in fully projected positions, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, said projections will engage the respective rack portions 84a and 88a respectively (substantially similar to the rack portions 84: and 88 shown in Figs. 1 and 2).
The lock casing 15a is substantially similar to said casing 15. However, the end wall 28a of said casing 150; is substantially thicker than the corresponding wall 28 shown in Fig. 1. Said end wall 28a however, is provided with openings 112, 113 adapted to receive the front ends of the bolt portions 102, 103, so that upon retractingthe horizontal bolt in the manner hereinafter appearing, the forward ends of the bolt portions will fit into said openings. Fixed to said end wall 28a are pins 115, 116 adapted to project into the longitudinal grooves 106 and 107 respectively, of the bolt portions 102 and 103.
The operation of the device will now be clear. The U-shaped bolts 18a and 19a are similar in construction to the bolts 18 and 19 and are similarly connected to the horizontal bolt. Upon actuating the horizontal bolt 20a, for projecting the same, the bolts 102 and'103 will be slidably moved outwardly and the relative positions of the pins 115 and 116 within the longitudinal grooves 106 and 107 will be changed. Near the end of the stroke, the pins 115 and 116 will become aligned with the annular grooves 108 and 109. At this point in the projection of the horizontal bolt, the outwardly extending pins or projections 110 will engage the teeth of the inwardly moving'racks 84a and 88a respectively, so that the bolt portions 102 and 103 will be given a rotary movement in addition to the forward movement out of the casing. The rotary movement will bring the wings 104 and 105 from a position transverse to the lock to a position parallel thereto as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The parts are preferably so proportioned that the bolt portions 102, 103 will be given a ro-' tary movement of 90;
The strike 23a is provided with integral portions 120 and 121 havmg transverse openings 122 and 123 respectively, large enough to admit the front ends 7 of the bolt portions therethru. When said front ends of the bolt portions have been passed entirely thru the openings 122 and 123 of the strike portions 120 and 121 respectively, the rotary movement of said bolt portions begins, and the wings 104 and are then brought into the positions shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. The lock is thus rendered j immy-proof and the bolt portions 102 and 103 cannot be given a sliding retracting movement without proper actuation of the knob 33 or key mechanism, be-
cause of the inter-engagement of the wings 104: and 105 and strike portions 120 and 121. Obvlously, upon retracting the horizontal bolt rotary movement is given to the bolt portions 102 and 103 by reason of the interengagement of the projecting pins with the respective rack portions 84a and 88a, which are moved outwardly by the gear wheels. When the wings 104 andv 105 are. brought to the transverse position for alignment with said openings 122 and 123, the pins 110 will come out of engagement with the rack teeth and the pins and 116 will enter the longitudinal grooves 106 and 107.
The remainder of the retracting movement v will then cause only slid-ing movement of the bolt portions 102 and 103'. It will be noted that rotation of the bolt portions 102 and .103 is notpossible until thepins106 and .107
are aligned with the annular grooves 108 and 109 respectively.
The helically grooved rods, as well as the remainder of the actuating mechanism, are located within the casing, and only the bolts are projected, this construction making for a neat and compact look.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
' As various possible embodiments might. be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A lock comprisinga casing, a member formed with a helical thread rotatably and non-slidably mounted within said! casing,
and a bolt slidably mounted within said casing adapted to be projected from said casing, having means coacting with the thread of said member for causing rotation thereof upon slidably moving said bolt,'and a sec- .ond bolt slidably mounted on said casing for movement in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said bolt, and means on said member operatively engaging said second bolt for moving the same upon causing sliding movement of said first bolt.
2. A look comprising a casing, a member having a helical thread thereon non-slidably and rotatably mounted within said casing, a gear wheel mounted on said member for rotation therewith, a second gear wheel meshing with said first wheel mounted for rotation within said casing, a pair of oppositely extending bolts having rack portions meshing with said gear wheels, and a member slidably mounted within said casing having means coacting with the thread of said first member for causing rotation thereof.
3. A look comprising a casing, a member having a helical thread thereon non-slidably and rotatably mounted within said casing, a gear wheel mounted on said member for rotation therewith, a second gear wheel meshing with said first wheel mounted for rotation within said casing and a pair of oppositely extending bolts having rack portions meshing with said gear wheels, a member slidably mounted within said casing having means coacting with the thread of said first member for causing rotation there of, said last named member having a portion adapted to be projected from said casing.
4. In a lock, a casing having a pair of parallel wall portions formed with two pair of aligned bearing openings, a rod rotatably mounted in one pairof openings having a portion extending beyond one of said walls, a shaft rotatably mounted in the other pair of aligned openings, a gear wheel mounted on said rod and between said walls, and a secondfgear wheel mounted on said shaft meshing with said first gear, wheel.
5; In a look, a casing having a pair of parallel wall portions formed with two pair of aligned bearing openings, a rod rotatably mounted in one pair of openings having a portion extending beyond one of said walls, a shaft rotatably mounted in the other pair of aligned openings, a gear wheel mounted on said rod and between said'walls, a second gear wheel mounted on said shaft meshing with said first gear wheel, and a pair of oppositelyextending rack members meshing with said gear wheels.
6. In a look, a casing having a pair of parallel wall portions formed with two pair of aligned bearing openings, a rod rotatably mounted in one pair of openings having a portion extending beyond one of said walls,

a shaft rotatably mounted in the other pair of aligned openings, a gear wheel mounted on said rod and between said walls, a second gear wheel mounted on said shaft meshing with said first gear wheel, a pair of oppositely extending rack members meshing with said gear wheels, and a horizontal bolt slidably mounted within said casing havlng a portion extending into the threaded groove on said first rod, and means for translating.

In a look, a casing having a pair of parallel wall portions, formed with a pair of aligned bearing openings, a rod rotatably mounted within said openings and having a. portion extending beyond one of said walls, said rod being formed with a steep pitched helical thread, a member slidably mounted within said casing having a portion'projectmg into the thread of said rod for causing rotation thereof, a geared wheel mounted on the portion of the rod extending between said walls and splined to said rod, a horizontal bolt portion on said slidably mounted member, and a vertical bolt having a rack portion meshing with said gear wheel whereby said bolt portion and bolt may be simultaneously projected.
9. In a lock, a casing, a member rotatably and non-slidably mounted therein, a member slidably mounted within said casing having means co-operating with said first member to cause rotation thereof, a gear wheel fixed to said first member, a bolt having a rack meshing with said gear wheel, said slidably mounted member having a bolt portion adapted to be projected from said casing, and means on said bolt portion adapted to engage said rack for causing rotation of said bolt portion simultaneously with the projecting movement thereof.
10. A look comprising a casing, a member having a helical thread thereon non-slidably and rotatably mounted within said casing, a bolt slidably mounted within said casing having a projection engaging said thread for rotating said member upon causing sliding movement of said bolt, a gear wheel mounted on said member for rotation therewith, a second gear wheel meshing with said first wheel mounted for rotation within said casing, and a pair of oppositely extending bolts having rack portions meshing with said gear wheels, said gear wheels being similar in size and mounted on aligned, parallel axes, and said rack portions being aligned and parallel.
11. A look comprising a casing, a member formed with a helical thread rotatably and non-slidably mounted within said casing, a bolt slidably mounted within said casing having a portion adapted to be projected from said casing, said bolt being provided with means coacting with the thread of.
said member for causing rotation thereof upon slidably moving said bolt, a hand knob rotatably mounted on said casing, and means connecting said knob to said bolt for causing sliding movement of the latter upon rotating the former.
12. A lock comprising a casing, 21. member having a helical thread thereon rotatably and non-slidably mounted within said casing, means for rotating said member including a bolt slidably mounted in said casing and having a portion engaging said thread, and means for causing sliding movement of said bolt, a gear wheel fixedly mounted on said member, and a second bolt mounted on said casing for sliding movement in a direction transverse to the movement of the first bolt and having a rack meshing with said gear wheel.
13. A look comprising a casing, a member having a helical thread thereon rotatably and non-slidably mounted within said oassliding movement of said bolt for rotating said member, a gear wheel fixedly mounted on said member for rotation therewith, a second gear wheel rotatably mounted within said casing and meshing with said first wheel, and a pair of oppositely extending bolts having racked portions meshing with said gear wheels.
