' F. .1. 05mm INDEX TO BE USED WITH TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES AND OTHER BOOKS Filed Oct. 12, 1931 E a v Z W wh .3 am m. ""1 B ATTO RNEY;
Patented Mar. 7, 1933 FRANCIS JOHN OSUCH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN INDEX TO BE USED WITH TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES AND OTHER.'BOOKS Application filed October 12, 1931. -.Serial 1 \To. 568,442.
This invention relates to indexing and covering devices, particularly designed for use with bound books such as directories and the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel indexing and covering de vice which may be applied to and removed from a bound book, without injuring or.
altering the binding or the leaves of the latter. Still further objects of the invention will become readilv an arent u on reference to the following detailed description and to the appended drawing disclosing a preferred em bodiment of the same.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of an embodiment shown in use with a bound book;
Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view of the same; 7
Fig. 3 shows the devlce in use with the bound book closed, and with a cover part of" the device open;
Fig. 4 shows the cover part of the device in open position.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the device includes a plurality of index leaves 1 slightly larger than the leaves of. the bound book, the latter having a coverreferenced 2. On those edges of the index leaves adjacent the open edge of the book are a plurality of alphabetical indices 3 which are adapted to project beyond the edges of.
the book leaves.
F or mounting the index leaves there are provided a pair of transverse members 4,, preferably in the form of angles, which are.
disposed outside of the leaves and to which the leaves are hingedly and permanently connected bv bent wires 5, these having ends. secured to the upper and lower edges of the 7 tion of a. cover 7, the back section being.
referenced 8.
may be applied to the cover, or vice versa.
. It will be observed that the device comprises, in general, two groups ofparts, one of which is the cover per se and the other of which includes the angles 4, the wires 5 and the index leaves 1. The last mentioned group, may be secured to and removed from the first mentioned group as a unit, through the medium of the keyhole slots and headed rivet-s, and may be appliedto a bound book, without injuring or permanently disturbingthe leaves Or original cover of the latter.
It will be observed that in order to remove the index from a bound book it is first necessary to slide the cover 8 and the indexing unit, relatively, so as to present the larger portions of the keyhole slots to the rivet heads, after which the cover and the indexing unit may be separated. When so separated they may-befremoved from the bound book in a manner which will be obvious.
. To reap-.; 17 ply the index to a bound book, it is essary to thread the leaves to be indexed between the indexing leaves, after which the index perse, and with it, the bound book,
- T5 It will be observed that the cover part may be made of any suitable material to give permanence thereto and may be provided with advertising matter in a manner that is well known. Further the indexing leaves may be"v so ruled on one side as indicated to provide spaces for favored numbers, and may also be provided with advertising matterif desired.
It will also be observed that while the members 4 are shown aspermanently secured to '85 theleaves andremovably secured to the cover 7 it will be clear that but one of the members may be so constructed, the other one if desiredmaybe permanently ,or detachably secured to the cover or permanently or detach ably secured to the leaves. I
Now having described the inventionand a preferred embodiment of the same, it will be clearly understood that the scope of the invention is to be limited, not to the specific details herein shown, but only by the claims which follow. 7 v
I claim:
1. An index for bound books comprising a back section adapted to fit against and cover the bound edge of the book, members at the opposite ends of the back section and detachably secured thereto, and a plurality of separate index leaves hingedly connected to said members, the latter and the leaves being applicable to and removable from the bound book as a unit with the index leaves interspersed among indexed leaves of the book.
2. In an index for bound books, a back section adapted to fit against and cover the bound edge of the book, and an indexing unit, removable from and applicable tothe back section, as a unit, the unit having members detachably fastened to the back section at opposite ends thereof, outside of said book, and
. index leaves hingedly and substantially permanently secured to said members.
3. In an index for bound books, a back section adapted to fit against and cover the bound edge of the book, and an indexing unit, removable from and applicable to the back section, as a unit, the unit having members detachably fastened to the back section at opposite ends thereof, outside of said book, and index leaves hingedly and substantially permanently secured to said members by elongated means running from the upper edges of the leaves upwardly to the upper member, and from the lower edges of the leaves downwardly to the lower member.
4. In an index for bound books, a back. section adapted to fit against and cover the.
bound edge of the book, and an indexing unit, removable from and applicable to the back section, as a unit, the unit having members detachably fastened to the back section at opposite ends thereof, outside of said book, and index leaves hingedly and substantially permanently secured to said members by elongated wires running from the upper edges of the leaves upwardly to the upper member, and from the lower edges of the leaves downwardly to the lower member.
5. In an index for bound books, a back section adapted to fit against and cover the bound edge of the book, members above and below the upper and lower edges of the book leaves and secured to and extending transversely across the back section, index leaves between the members, and means hingedly connecting and extending from the upper and lower edges of the index leaves to'the members.
6. In an index for bound books, a back section adapted to fit against and cover the bound edge of the book, members above and below the upper and lower edges of the book leaves and detachably secured to and extending transversely across the back section, in-' dex leaves between the members, and means hmgedly connecting and extending from the upper and lower edges of the index leaves to V the members.
