The present invention contemplates the provision of a dental X-ray film holder, constructed to permit the film to be quickly and conveniently associated therewith or removed therefrom, and when associated therewith it is held in proper position with relation to the tooth by clamping the holder between the teeth.

One of the chief characteristics of the present invention resides in the provision of a holder of the above mentioned character, constructed, or designed to accommodate a modeling compound adapted to be arranged between the teeth of the patient to receive the impression of the teeth, so that should a second picture be desired or necessary of the same tooth at a different angle, theimprint of the teeth in the modeling composition would insure the holder being placed in the exact position which is formerly occupied in the patients mouth.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connec' tion with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view showing how the holder is clamped between the teeth of the patient, and how the relatively soft modeling composition is used.

The film holder forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a b ase 10 which may vary in size and contour without departing from the inventive idea, and a front wall 11, the latter rising an appreciable distance above the base and spaced therefrom for a portion of its length to define a film receiving groove 12. The holder-in its entirety may be constructed from any suitable material which may also vary in size to ac-. commodate films of different dimensions, the film being placed in the groove 12, and held fixed relatively to the'holder by means ofsuitable screws or other fastening elements 13 carried by the front wall 11. The base 10 is designedto accommodate a modeling com position of relatively soft material, upon which the patient is adapted to bite, and thereby leave the impression of the teeth or tooth'being X-rayed as will be readily appreciated. The composition indicated at 14' is relatively soft for this purpose, but will readily harden when removed from between the teeth of the patient, thereby" leaving the,

impression of the teeth in the composition for a purpose to be presently described; Inaccordance with the preferred embodiments of the invention as clearly illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, the base 10 is provided with an open-,

ing 16 to receive the composition 14, while the walls of the base above and below the opening 16 are slightly beveled or tapered as at 17,- to permit spreading ofjthe composition when it is bit upon between the teeth of the patient.

In practice, the film 21 is placed in the groove 12 and the fastening elements 13 are tightened to hold the film fixed relatively to the holder. The modeling composition 14 is then associated with the base 10, and the holder placed between the teeth of the patient, the latter biting down upon the composition 14 as illustrated in Figure 1. As above stated the composition is relatively soft to receive the impression of the teeth of the patient, but will readily harden after it is removed from the mouth of the patient. After the picture has been taken the holder is removed, and the film 21 separated from the holder.

However, it is sometimes desirable to take a second picture of the same tooth, or a picture at a different angle from that taken by the first picture, whereupon a second film is associated with the same holder, and the latter again placed between the teeth of the patient. Inasmuch as the modeling composition is now provided with the impression of the patients teeth, it is manifest that the modeling composition would insure the holder being placed in the exact position between 5 the teeth that it formerly occupied in the patients mouth. Consequently the second film is again held in exactly'the same relative position with relation to the tooth as it initially occupied for the first picture.

" It is, of course, to be understood that the molding compound is used only when itis desired to take a second picture, namely one. to take a stereoscopic view, which gives the third dimension. However, when a second picture is not necessary or desirable, the base of the holder has associated therewith a soft flexible rubber instead of the molding compound. 7

While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it known that I do not limit myself to what is herein illustrated and described and that such changes may be re- 2 sorted to when desired as fall within the scope of ,what is claimed.

What I- claim is A dental X-ray film holder comprising a base adapted to be arranged between the teeth of the patient, said base having an opening therethrough, and oppositely beveled walls above and below said opening, a modeling composition of relatively soft material adapted to be received by said opening, and adapted to receive the impression of the teeth when hit upon to. maintain the holder in the mouth of the patient, and means forming part of said holder for supporting a film fixed relatively thereon.
