Patented Feb.r 28,1933
UNrria'zD` ysrnras i PATENT orriceN CLARENCE 2li'.V EGGLESTON AND DUANE D.` GUTEKUNST, 0F JACKSON, MICHIGAN PHONOGRAPH Application filed `October 8, 1928; Serial No. 310,994.
The main object of this invention is to provide a phonograph especially designed for signaling or making announcement such as Warning signals or advertising announcements or the like.
A further object is to provide an instrument of this character which is very simple and economical in its parts and at the same time durable.
Objects relating to details and economies of our invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is illustratedk in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a detail view mainly in central longitudinal section on line 1-1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 2 2( 2O of Fig. 1. j
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a record. Fig. 4 is a plan lview of one of the support members.
Referring to the drawing, We' provideV a bracket 1 adapted for mounting the instrument upon a suitable support. The motor unit which may be of standard or suitable design is provided with a housing 2. This housing is mounted on the supporting plate 3. The motor is indicated at 4.
The driving shaft 5 of the motor is provided With a pinion 6 meshing with a gear 7 on the periphery of theturntable which is carried by the shaft 8 mounted on the motor unit.
We pro-vide a forwardly tapered housing member 9 having out-turned flanges 10 and 11 at its ends. The flange 10 is secured to the flange of the motor unit housing by bolts 4G 12, a gasket 13 being arranged between the flanges to make a tight joint at this point.
A horn 14 is provided with a base 15 having an outwardly projecting flange 16 at its edge.
A diaphragm 17 and plate-like needle unit supporting spider 18 are arranged in parallel relation between the flanges 11 and 16, these parts being clamped bythe bolts 19. Re-V silient rings 20 are arranged at each side of the diaphragm.
A gasket 21 is arranged between the needle unit supporting spider and the ange 11.`
The needle unit designated generally by the numeral 22 is mounted on the supporting spiderl and operatively connected to the diaphragm with the needle 23 in operative relation to the record 24. This record is clamped' upon the turntable by means of the'thumb nut 25.'
The record grooves are indicated at 26, the same being arranged in a circle. y Our improved phonograph or announcing or call instrument isgsimple and economical in its parts; it is well adapted for use in stores in making advertising announcements or for street or tralhc signals or the like, or for lire calls and the like.
Havingthus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 1. In a phonograph of the class described, the combination with a supporting plate, a cup-like motor casing removably secured to said plate, a motor carried by said casing having its shaft extending through said plate, a turntable carried by said plate, disposed parallel thereto and driven by said motor, a phonographic record mounted on said turntable and having thereon a single circular phonautographic groove formed to 8o reproduce words of warning, means removably securing said record to said turntable, whereby the record may be changed, but 'when in place will remain so, regardless of the position of the turntable, a conical housing having flanged ends detachably secured to said plate and enclosing said turntable, a spider disposed adjacent the end of said housing, a diaphragm disposed parallel vto t said spider, a tone arm carried by said spider and connected to said diaphragm, a stylus mounted on said tone arm and operatively engaging said phonautographic groove, a horn having a flanged inner end disposed adjacent to the rim of said diaphragm, and means securing said horn, diaphragm, spider and housing together, said housing and said plate readily disconnectable and connectable for the purpose of changing said record.` j 2. In a phonograph of the class described,
whereby the record may be changed, butv When in place Will remain so, regardless of the position of the turntable, a housing having ends detaehably secured to said plate and enclosing said turntable, a spider disposed adjacent to the end of said housing, a diaphragm disposed parallel to said spider, a tone arm carried by said spider and c onneoted to said diaphragm, a stylus mounted on said tone arm and operatively' enga-ging said phonautographiegroove, a horn having an inner end disposed adjacent to the rim of said diaphragm, and means securing said horn, diaphragm, spider and housing together.
In Witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands.
