Description

F633. 14, 1933. J. E. LYQNS ,6
COMBINATION TABLE AND CHRISTMAS TREE HOLDER Filed NOV. 11, 1930 TEN GFFICE JAMES E. LYON'S, OF MAYWOOD, CALIFORNIA COMBINATION TABLE AND CHRISTMAS TREE HOLDER Application filed November 11, 1930. Serial No. 494,826.
This invention relates to a combination As shown in the drawing: table and Christmas tree holder, and has for The reference numeral 10 indicates genone of its principal objects the provision of erally what might be termed a base element an article of furniture which shall be usefor the improved combination stand and tree ful during the major portion of the year as a support of this invention, this base being table or stand, and which may be quickly provided on its inside with a supporting eleand easily converted into a tree holder at ment or the like as shown at 12, and compris- Christmas time. ing essentially a block having a plurality of One of the important objects of this inintegral extenslons, preferably four in num- 10 vention is the provision in a combined stand her as best shown in Figure 4. 60
or table and Christmas tree holder of means Pivotally mounted to each of the extenfor properly supporting a Christmas tree sions of the block 12 is a leg or the like 14, or the like in a desired vertical position while each of these legs comprising essentially an at the same time the supporting means is angularly shaped element as best illustrated 5 automatically adjustable to various sizes of in Figures 1 or 2, which may be formed of tree trunks, wood, metal or some other suitable material, Another and still further important 010- but preferably composed of woodwith a side ject of the invention is the provision in a lng Of metal as shown at 16. o combination article of furniture of means Attached to each of these angularly shaped comprising a stand or support for vases or l g 18 a e lOIl 18, these extensions beother objects whi h u ort can upon very mg adapted when placed in vertical position short notice be converted into a Christmas to pp the table p the like a and tree holder which will also prove an attrac- 1 p a d n an ang ar position as shOWIl tive article of furniture and which will not 111 gu they act as supporting braces 01' be unsightly in any way, while at the same Xteudlng legs whereby a Chrlstmas tree or time providing a firm and substantial supthe 11 k6 2 1 lntalned in proper vertlcal porting means for the tree. p p- Other and further important objects of It W111 be noted that the arrangement of the invention will be apparent from the disthe 1egs 1418 Wlth the attilchtd base element closures i th accompanying d i d 1s reversed when the device 1s used as a tree 3 following specification support, and a groove 1s formed 1n the outer The invention, in a preferred form, is ilend of each of the 8; members so that lustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more accurate conformmg to h 001113011? of 3V more fully described the tree trunk 22 results w1th an accordlng- In the drawing: ly adequate support. 5 Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved t 5 i? 5 F to be A d as fl p combination stand and Christmas tree holder 5 an t 8 Op 0 1S astene m posltlon Wlth respect to the upper ends of the extensions 1 0 i 4o t aiid mventlm showmb the same used as a 18, which extensions are then 1n vertical p0- Figure 2 illustrates the device with the top if i g g l gig i gi ig g i g removed and inverted so as to be used as a table top Q being accomplished by passing ohl'lstmas l' holdersuitable bolts or the like 24: through open- Flgul'e 3 1s a bottom P VleW of the top ings 26 in the ends of the members 18, these 45 of the table or stand, portions being broken b lt b i l passed th h correspondaway. ing openings in downward extensions 28 of Figure 4 is a bo tom View Of he Stand, a plate 30 which is mounted on the bottom showing the top removed therefrom, and with face of the table top, this being maintained two of the legs also removed so as to more in position by means of screws or the like 0 clearly show the construction. 32. Wing nuts 34 are used on the ends of the bolts 24 so that a removable yet positive connection between the table top and the extensions 18 can be readily made.
In order to assure a more accurate positioning of the leg elements 1418 with respect to the base 10, notches 38 are formed in the periphery of the base into which corresponding portions of the extensions 18 are adapted to be fitted when the same are in vertical position. This provides a more securely braced structure, and one which will not be liable to sagging or deformation even under considerable stress or strain.
It will be evident that herein is provided an article of furniture which combines all the advantages of a very attractive table or stand with the more useful features of a readiiy available and automatically adjustable Christmas tree stand. The device can be used as an ordinary article of furniture for the major portion of the time, and when the Christmas season approaches, it can be converted without use of tools into a reliable tree support practically immediately, and any annoyance and delay due to searching for last years support or obtaining a new one is positively eliminated.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I, therefore, do not propose limitin g the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A combination stand including a base, supporting legs pivotally mounted on the base, extensions for the legs, and a top removably mounted on the extensions.
2. A combination stand, including a base, supporting legs pivotally mounted on the base, extensions for the legs, and a top removably mounted on the extensions, said removable mounting comprising bolts and wing nuts extending through openings in the extensions and correspondingly openings in the top.
3. A combination stand, including a base,
supporting legs pivotally mounted on the base, extensions for the legs, and a top removably mounted on the extensions, together with bracing means for rigidly positioning the combined supporting legs and extensions with respect to the base and to the top.
4. A combination stand, including a base, supporting legs pivotally mounted on the base, extensions for the legs, and a top removably mounted on the extensions, together with bracing means for rigidly positioning the combined supporting legs and extensionswith respect to the base and to the top, said brace means comprising downwardly extending legs on the top, said legs having openings therein adapted to be aligned with the corresponding openings in the ends of the extensions, and bolts adapted to be passed through said openings.
5. A combination stand, including a base, supporting legs pivotally mounted on the base, extensions for the legs, and a top removably mounted on the extensions, together with bracing means for rigidly positioning the combined supporting legs and extensions with respect to the base and to the top, said brace means comprising downwardly extending legs on the top, said legs having openings therein adapted to be aligned with the corresponding openings in the ends of the extensions, and bolts adapted to be passed through said openings, the base having notches in the periphery thereof for reception of corresponding portions of the extensions of the supporting legs.
6. A combination stand, including a base, supporting legs pivotally mounted on the base, extensions for the legs, and a top removably mounted on the extensions, together with reinforced metal connections between the top, the base, and corresponding portions of the legs and extensions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
