Description

W. G. BRUNING Filed April 8, 1952 LOCK FOR GASOLINE TANKS l j all HAHN /1 1 1u u Feb. 14, 1933.
Patented Feb. 14, 1933 UNITED STATES WILLIAM G. BRUNING, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA LOCK FOR (-)LASOIJNEv TANKS Application filed April 8, 1932. Serial No. 604,077.
This invention relates to a lock for the caps of gasoline tanks such as used on automobiles.
One of the objects is to provide a lock which 5 can be applied readily to a tank and will serve to prevent removal of the cap or closure by unauthorized persons, thereby preventing theft of gasoline by the insertion of a syphon.
A further obj ect is to provide a lock which is simple and inexpensive and can be applied readily without requiring the services of a skilled mechanic.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure l is a front elevation.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3, Figure l.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4, Figure l.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A designates a portion of the usual gas tank the inlet B of which has a neck C normally closed by a removable cap D.
The present improvement includes a split collar l the terminals of which form spaced substantially radial ears 2 connected close to their inner ends by a bolt 3 which, when tightened, will cause the collar to clamp securely around the neck C. Openings 4 are provided in these ears near their outer ends for receiving a lock E. A finger 5 extends outwardly from the collar at a point substantially diametrically opposite ears 2.
A cover 6 is adapted to be placed over cap D and around neck C and can be lined with a soft material 7 to prevent rattling. An angular or L-shaped slot 8 is formed in the edge of the cap and at a diametrically opposed point an ear 9 is extended outwardly from the cap leaving an opening 10. This ear has an aperture l1 adapted to register with the openings 4.
Aperture 10 is of a width equal to or 55 greater than the length of the laterally extended portion of slot 8. Thus when the cover is brought to proper position it can be lowered onto cap D so that finger 5 will be received by slot 8 while opening l() will receive ears 2. The cover is then given a turn to position finger 5 in the end of the laterally extended portion of slot 8 to bring ear 9 against one of the ears 2. Lock E is then secured in ears 2 and 9 as shown in Figure 4 65 so that the cover cannotbe rotated to release it from nger 5. As bolt 3 is protected by the cover it can not be reached to loosen the collar. Consequently only by unlocking and removing the cover can the cap D be taken o What is claimed is:
l. The combination with the filling neck of a container and a cap removably mounted thereon, of a collar on the neck, means for 7 binding the collar on the neck, ears extending from the ends of the collar, a projection on the collar at a point opposite the ears, a cover adapted to be positioned over and around the cap and collar and having an opening to receive the ears and an angular slot to receive the projection, and an ear on the cover adjacent tothe opening, said cover being rotatable relative to the cap to position the projection in the innermost portion of the angular slot and the ear of the cover close to the ears on the collar, there being apertures in all of the ears for the reception of a lock to hold the cover against rotation to release it from the project-ien. 9
2. The combination with the filling neck of a container and a cap removably mounted thereon, of a split collar on the neck, spaced 'ears on the ends thereof, a finger radiating 95 from the collar opposite the ears, a member engaging the ears to bind the collar on the neck, a cover for receiving the cap, neck and binding member, there being openings in the cover for receiving the finger and ears, said cover being rotatable relative to the ears and on the cover, there being apertures in all of the ears for receiving a lock to hold the cover x against rotation to release it from the finger.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affix-ed my signature.
