particularly designed for use in oil fields for operating deep well pumps employed in the oil fields. I
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 shows a fragmentary side elevation of the apparatus, shown partly in section.
Figure 2 shows an end view thereof, partly in section, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figu taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures the numeral 1 designates an upstanding post mounted on a suitable base, or platform 2, and pivotally mounted on the u per end of which there is the usual walking am 3, of any desired construction. Mounted on the platform 2 there is a suitable stand, or frame 4, which supports the cylinder 5. Within this cylinder there is a plunger 6, which is attached to the upper end of the plunger rod 7 and extending laterally each way at the lower end of the plunger rod, through the side slots 8, of the stand 4 are the connecting rods 9, 9, which constitute a cross-head. Side links 10, 10, are pivotally connected, at their lower ends, to the respective rods 9 and the upper ends of these links are connected by the cross rod 11,
which works in a bearing 12, mounted on the corresponding end of the walking beam 3. A guide rod 13 depends from the p unger rod 7 re 3 shows a horizontal sectional view and works in a suitable guidev 14 which extends down through the base 2. As the walking beam is oscillated up and down the plunger 6 will be reciprocated accordingly. The numeral 15 designates a well casin which extends down into the well to be pumped. Around the well there is the suitable platform 16, mounted on the foundation 17 and disposed above the platform 16 there is a, casing head 18, connected to the upper end of the well casing and having a lateral connection 19 for the attachment of a fluid line through which the fluid is conducted from the well. The pump is operated through the usual pump sucker rod 20 fixed to the upper end of which there is a cross yoke 21. On the platform 16 there is an arcuate track 22 which is fastened to said platform and is provided for the purpose to be hereinafter stated.
Above the well there is a cylinder 23 which is mounted upon supporting legs or frames 24 whose lower ends are fastened to an arcuate foot 24; which is bolted to the track 22. Within the cylinder 23 there is a plunger 25, which is attached to the lower end of the plunger rod 26. This plunger rod works loosely through the guide cap 27 at the upper end of the cylinder 23, and attached to its upper end there is a yoke 28. Operating rods 29, 29 are attached at their upper ends to the respective ends of the yoke 28 and their lower ends are attached to the corresponding ends of the yoke 21. i
A pressure transmitting pipe 30 is connected into the upper end of the cylinder 5 and extends underneath the platform 16 and up through said platform and is formed with a flange 31 which rests on the platform 16, said pipe being extended up above said flange and telescoped into the lower end of the pipe section 30 which enters the lower end of the cylinder 23. A ring nut 32 is threaded on to the lower end of the section 30' and rides on the flange 31 and interposed between said flange 31 and said nut 32 there is a ring-like packing 33. An annular clamp plate 34; surrounds the pipe section 30 and rests on the nut 32 and clamp bolts 35 extend through said plate 34 and flange 31 and the platform 16 as well and hold the assembled parts in their proper relation. to the platform 16. This construction permits the pipe section 30 to swivel or turn for the purpose to be hereinafter stated. The pressure transmitting conduit composed of the pipes 30, 30' may be filled with water, or other fluid'through an inlet 36, at the upper part of the section 30', thus completely filling the space between the plungers 6 and 25. While being filled the valve 37 may be opened to permit the discharge of air and the inlet connection 36 is provided with a relief valve 38, of conventional construction to relieve the pressure in case it exceeds a pre-determined limit.
In operation'upon an upward stroke of the plunger 6, the pressure will betransmitted into the cylinder 23 beneath the plunger 25 causing an upstroke of said last named plunger and of the pump. Upon down stroke of the plunger 6 the pressure being relieved the plunger 25 and the pump rod will descend by gravity and the pump operation will be thus accomplished.
It is obvious that a number of wells may be simultaneously pumped from a single source by duplicating the apparatus hereinabove described operated from the beam' 3, and connecting each apparatus into the cylinder '5 throu h a pressure transmitting pipe such as 30 as lllustrated in Figure 1, and it will thus be found practical to operate many wells from a single walking beam.
. At times it will be found desirable to disconnect a pump from the operating mechanism for repairs, or other purposes, and to provide for this the weight 39 has been suspended from the weight rod 40 down into a casing-lined bore 41, the casing 42 of which has its upper end extending up through the platform 16 at a convenient distance from the well. The upper end of this rod 40 carries a cross yoke 43, similar in construction to the cross yoke 21. When it is desired to disconnect a particular well the workman may detach the lower ends of the rods 29 and then swing the foot 24 around on the track 22 so not interfered with. In swvin ing the foot 24' around, as above explaine the section 30' of the pressure transmitting line swivels around the upper end of the line 30 so as to carry that portion of the apparatus supported on the frame 24 as well as saidframe 24, around from over the well so that the disconnected pump may be repaired and put into working condition and the rods 29 then disconnected from the yoke 43 and the foot 24 swung back around and into position so that said rods 29 may be connected on the yoke 21 and the operation of the well resumed. The

It is sometimes desirable to vary the stroke of the plunger 6 and in order to accomplish this the bearing 12 may be adjusted on the beam 3. When this hearing is adjusted toward the post 1, it will shorten the stroke.

and in or er to maintain the required amount of fluid in said pressure transmitting line a plunger pump is provided which is preferably secured to and depends from the platform 16. This pump consists of a cylinder 72 in which there isa vertically reciprocable plunger 73 to which is attached a plunger rod 74. Surrounding this plunger rod and interposed between the platform16 and a stop 75 carried by said rod, thereis a: coil spring 76. Leading from'the bottom of the cylinder 72 and entering the pressure transmitting line30, there is a supply line 77. The cylinder 72 is supplied with fluid from a fluid reservoir 79 connected into the cylinder 72 throu h the line 80 which is equipped with a ack pressure valve 81. As leakage occurs from. the line 30, 30', the down stroke of the yoke 21 will be increased so that eventually it will contact with the free end of the rod 74 and as it does so it will force the plunger 73 downwardly and force fluid outwardly through theline 77 into the line 30, 30'. The line 77 is equipped with a suitable back pressure valve 78 to prevent the back flow of fluid. Through the mechanism described fluid will be automatically delivered into the line 30, 30' to maintain the fluid level therein at a predetermined point. 'The rod 74 may be equipped with a foot pedal 82 for manually operating the plunger 73 to force additional fluid into the line 30, as desired.
When it is desired to disconnect the walking beam 3 from the pump for pulling the pump rods, or for other-purposes the links 10, may be disconnected from said beam in the conventional manner and also disconnected from the conventional operating pitto the working load, said last mentioned man and then lowered. This will permit the end of said beam to be carried up out of the way so that it will not interfere with the work incident to pulling, or working; on the pump.
What I claim is:
1. An apparatus for effecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system including a pair of cylinders, a plunger in each cylinder, a fluid pressure line connecting said cylinders, operating means connected to one of said plungers, and load carrying means carried by the other plunger, a working load and an idle load, said last mentioned plunger and its cylinder being pivotally mounted, to adapt said plunger for connection to either load.
2. An apparatus for effecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system including a pair of cylinders, a fluid pressure line connectin said cylinders, a plunger in each cylinder, fluid in said line through which power may be transmitted from one plunger to operate the other plunger, a working load and an idle load, means for operating one plunger and a load carrying means connected to the other plunger, said last mentioned plunger and its cylinder forming a motor which is pivotally mounted so as to adapt it to be connected, alternatively to the working load or to the idle load.
3. An apparatus for effecting the continuous operation of a transmission system including a pair of cylinders, a slngle fluid pressure line connecting said cylinders, fluid in said line, a plunger in each cylinder, said plungers being adapted to work against said fluid in opposite directions, plunger driving means connected to one plunger, a working load and an idle load, means connected to the other plunger and adapted to connect it plunger, and its cylinder, forming a motor which is pivotally mounted to adapt the plunger thereof for connection to the idle load and the working load.
4. In an apparatus of the character described for effecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system and having a reciprocable driving means, a pair of cylinders, a plunger in each cylinder, a load for doing work and an idle load, means adapted to operatively connect one plunger to said driving means, means connected to the other plunger and adapted to operatively connect it with said working load or idle load and a fluid pressure line directly connecting said cylinders.
5. In anapparatus of the character described for effecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system and having a reciprocable driving means, a pair of cylinders, a plunger in each cylinder, means adapted to operatively connect one plunger with said driving means, separate loads, means connected to the other plunger and adapted to operatively connect it with either load, a fluid pressure line directly connecting said cylinders, fluid in said line between the cylinders forming means for transmitting power from'one plunger to the other plunger.
6. In an apparatus for effecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission systom having a reciprocable driving means,

7. An apparatus for effecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system including a reciprocable driving means, a
pair of cylinders, a plunger in each cylinder,-
means operatively connecting one plunger with said driving means, means connected to the other plunger and operatively connecting it with a working load, an idle load, a fluid pressure line connecting said cylinders, fluid in said line between the cylinders, forming means for transmitting power from one plunger to the other plunger, said means connected to said working load being detachable therefrom and the corresponding cylinder being mounted to revolve about a vertical axis to adapt said last mentioned means for connection to said idle load.
8. Inca-n apparatus of the character described for effecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system and having. a reciprocable driving means, a mechanism embodying a confined fluid column and means between which the column is located for transmitting power in either direction, through said fluid column. an idle load, said transmitting means being adapted to beconnected one to the driving means and the other to a working load, the last mentioned transmitting means being pivotally mounted to permit its connection to the idle load.
9. An apparatus for eflecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system including the combination with a reciprocable driving means, a mechanism embodying a confined fluid column, and means between which the column is located for transmitting power. in either direction, through said fluid column, an idle load, said transmitting means being connected one, to the driving means and the other, adapted to be connected to a working load, said means being detachable therefrom and being adapted to be connected to said working load revolvable so as to adapt it to be connected to said idle load.
10. An apparatus of the character described for eifecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system and comprising a working load, an idle load, a pivotally mounted motor adapted to be con-- nected to said working load for doing work or to said idle load.
11. An apparatus of the character described for efiecting the uninterrupted operation of a transmission system and comprising a working load, an idle load, a pivotally mounted motor adapted to be connected to said working load for doing work or to said idle load and transmission means for operating said motor.
