J. J. sMnjH A TOOL Filed Jan. 3l, 1930 ATTORN EYS Patented Feb. 7, 1933 Partnr orrics JOSEPH J'. SMITH, OF DEEP RIVER, CONNECTICUT TOOL Application led January 31, 1930. Serial No. 425,036.
This invention relates to tools. I
It is among the objects of the present 1nvention to provide a novel and improved driving tool adapted for use in conjunction with pneumatic hammers.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a removable driving head for pneumatic hammers, which is particularly adapted to drive nails.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a driving tool for pneumatic hammers which is adapted to drive nails and which is further adapted for use in setting the nail head below the surface of the material into which the nail is being driven.
Other objects of the present invention include the novel construction and interrelation of parts whereby a simple and improved adjustable pneumatic hammer head is provided.
Other objects of the present invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3 8 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the present invention includes a longitudinal shaft 10, one end of which is adapted to be provided with a suitable head (not shown) which is adapted to be received within a conventional form of pneumatic driving mechanism, such as the pneumatic hammer now in use. No specic type of connecting head is provided on the shaft 10, it being understoo d that this forms no part of the present invention, and that any preferred type of connecting head may be used, if desired.
he shaft intermediate its ends is provided with an extending shoulder 11, and at its lower end is reduced to provide a driving terminal 12. As shown in the drawing, the shaft 10 including the shoulder 11 and terminal 12, is preferably formed integral. It is within the scope of the invention, however, to form the shaft assembly of various parts should structural or manufacturing advantages be obtained thereby.
Slidably mounted upon the shaft 10, a housing 18 is provided. a central bore adapted to receive the shaft 10 below the shoulder 11, the bore at the end of the housing being reduced as at 14, to guide the reduced driving extremity 12. The up- The housing 13has f per end of the bore of the housing 13 is enlarged, as at 15, to receive therein a'coil's'pring 15a, surrounding the shaft 10, the upper end of the spring abutting the lower face of the shoulder 11, while the lower end of the spring abuts the end of the enlarged portion 1 5 of the housing bore. The arrangement is such that the expansion of the spring normally tends to force the housing 13 downwardly with respect to the shaft 10, whereby the driving portion 12 is normally received within upper end of the outer surface of the housing 13, the arrangement being such thatfree upward mov-ement of the shacklel and housing with respect to the shoulder 11 is provided, while the shoulder 11 acts to limit the downward movement of the housing unj der the iniiuence of the spring.
rThe structure is completed by the provision of apertures 19 in the housing 13, which lead into the bore of the housing, whereby lubrication between the housing and shaft may be applied. Lubricating and cleaning apertures 2O are also provided in the tapered lower extremity of the housing.' rI`he lower end of the housing is provided with a countersunk recess 21 terminating the reduced bore 14 of theV housing. configuration together with the apertures 20, provides for the cleaning of the lower eX- tremity and forlubrication thereof.
In the operation of the device, the head of a nail or the like may be received within the The co-operation of this 9 ing having 'van vexternal annular `groove Yadytion with respect thereto. v j a upper 'end of the casing and formed with marginal inwardly offset upper ends combining to provide an annular shoulder for limiting relative movement of the casing and impact shaft and for guiding the upper end of said `impact shaft; Y

lowest posi- 4 With this construction it will seen that y when a nail vis driven with its headflush tolbi A the working surface, the housingl may be held against the working surface and the'V reciprocation in the shaft thereinwill drive the head of the nail belowjthefworking surface, thus to effect 'a setting operation.v 4
Fromgthe foregoing ity win be understood thatthe invention Vis not confined to thel speciiicstructural details herein' shown, but that Y numerous` changes, modifications, and' the full of`eo|uivalents maybe resorted to v f without departing from the spirtor scope of i theV invention' as outlined inthe nappended "'claims, z y
