Loosn isrNnEn Application led November 20, 1930. :Serial No. 496,970. 4
This invention relates to a new and improved loose leaf binder.
The main object of my invention is tol provide a loose leaf binder which has a metal back and which is of such a design thatit can be made and assembled quickly and cheaply.
Other objects and advantages relate to the size, shape and arrangement of parts, all as will more fully appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, partially broken away and partially in section, of a binder embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a section onl line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a. binder embodying a. modified form of my invention. Y
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 5. j
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a section similar to Figure 5 with the covers of the binder in the open position.
Figure 7 is adetail transverse section taken through one edge of the back members, illustrating the hinged connection of the spacing strips shown in Figures 5 and 6.
My improved binder comprises opposed housings 1 and 2, opposed covers 3 and 4, a main back plate 5, and a supplementary back plate 6.
Housing l, cover 3 and one longitudinal edge of back plate 5 are provided with tubular extensions which encircle a rod 7 The tubular extensions on the three members just mentioned are in staggered relation to form a piano hinge.
Similarly, housing 2, cover 4 and the opposite longitudinal edge of back plate 5 have tubular extensions which encircle a rod 8 to form a piano hinge.
Back plate 6 has secured, as by riveting, thereto in spaced relation adjacent one end thereof, a pair of upwardly extending posts 9 and 10. Posts 9 and 10 are internallyv threaded.
A similar pair of posts, not shown, are secured'adjacent the opposite end ofbacli plate 6.v Back plate 6 is `preferablyprovided with depressions at the points where the, posts as 9 and 10 are secured so that the rivetedheads of such posts will not extend 4beyond back member. j -Y Back plate 5 is y through which bolts 11andf12-extend- 'Bolt. 11 isthreaded into post 9y and bolt i12 is threaded into post 10 to secure the back. plate 6to back-plate 5. 4
Similar bolts, not shown, are-'provided for providedl with?. apertures the purposeof engagingthe posts at the opL positesend ofback plate 16; Back late ;5'is preferably. provided with depresse portions as 13 and 14 so that-the heads'of thebolt'sU will be countersunk to bring them level with theupp'er aceof back plate 5.- f i Y? Back-plate 6 has a -facing 1510i leatherfor other appropriatev material.'corresponding yto -in their ends ing-which are removably positioned rods 19 and20 to releasably hold4 posts 18 in position in housingsland 2.
Inthe modified'form'shown in Figures 3 to 6, housing 1,"cover.3 and back plate 15` are secured together with the piano hinge v'above described.` .1: .v n v ,Similarly,'housing 2, cover 4 and back plate `5 arexsecured together by a vpiano hinge'. For .the `purpose of 4sec1`1ring`vbackV plate 6 in position, Ik provide adjacent one edge thereof', a longitudinally extending member 22 securedftoback plate 6 as by.welding. -1-
Member 22 has .a plurality of spaced tubular portions incorporated into thel piano hinge by which housing 1, covering 3 and back plate 5 are secured together.
A similar member 23 is provided on the opposite edge of back plate 6 and carries tubular portions which are incorporated into the piano hinge by which housing 2, cover 4 and back plate 5, are secured together.
The longitudinal edges of back plate 6 extend outwardly in juxtaposition to the rear y "i 1,896,881 'i and the covers 3 and 4 to permit the manipula? Y tion of the covers above their respective hinges. f
For the purposeof rigidity and in order that the structure may resist the shocks to which it issubjected in use, I prefer tofmake back plates 5'and-k 6 of metal although other y materials may be employed. A Y Y Y o,
I have here shown a particular arrangement'of parts asan exemplificationfof an em bodiment of my invention, but I do notjde'sire v to restrict myself to the exact size, shape I or relation' of parts as various changes may be made Within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: f ;1.'In a loose leaf binder, a back member,
a. housing hinged to each longitudinal edge of thezbaok-member, opposed covers hinged 20 to. the back member, a plurality of posts connecting the housings, and a supplementary back member rigidlyjheld in spaced relation I to the first named backmember. Y
Ina looseV leaf binder, a back'member,
a housing hinged to each longitudinal edge of the back member, opposed covers hinged to the back member, a plurality of posts connecting the housings, a supplementary vback member, a plurality .of posts ongthesupplementary back member, andV means Vforse'cur- `ng the vposts to the'first namedback mem- Aer.g'.
3. In a looseleaf binder, a back member, a Y Y housing hinged to each longitudinal edge of the backmember, opposed covers hinged to the back member, a plurality of posts connecting the housings, a supplementary back member, a plurality of posts onone of thev back members, and means -for securing the 1 40 posts tomtheotherwback member( l 4. Ina loose leaf binder, a back member, `a` housing and a lcover joined together on a y piano hinge, a second housingand a Vsecond cover'joined to the back memberlonfa secl ondpiano hinge,a plurality of posts connect ing the housings, a supplementary back member, opposite strips each *havingVV oneiV-edge v secured to thegV supplementary back lmember and vhavingthe` otherfedge incorporatedy in one of the piano-hinges. v j
In Witness whereof Iv have hereuntoset my n -A hand this seventeenth day of November, 1930. Y
