IMPROVEMENT lN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 89,685, dated April 17, 1877 application filed January 4, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BELL, of Sumner, in the county of Gratiot and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Ghurns, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in churns of that class in which the churn-body is mounted on rockers, like a cradle; and it consists, mainly, in the novel and peculiar construction and arrangementof the various parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the drawing, A represents a rectangular wooden body,.having a false bottom, A, of sheet-metal, hipped to give it strength to resist the pressure of the cream, which otherwise would collapse it. The space between the bottom proper and the false bottom forms a chamber, which may be filled with either cold or warm water, to bring the cream to the proper temperature, and is filled through a tube, B, rising from its apex, and passing up through the cover 0 of the body.
The body is strengthened at the top by a frame consisting of two extended side bars, I) b, connected by girts b b at the ends of the body, the extended ends of the side bars being also connected by girt-rounds b 12 which serve as handles by which to rock the churn.
The cover 0 is in one piece, which is provided with a pendent flange, c, of hoop-iron, received in a groove formed between the top edge of the body and its strengthening-frame, whereby all swashing out of the cream is prevented.
The cover is also provided with two pendent breakers, d d, which, with the tube B, form three breakers, through which the cream must pass at each oscillation, thereby breaking up the fatty globules, and liberating the butter more rapidly than if concussion alone were depended upon. It is also provided with a perforated ventilating-tube, a, through which any gases generated in churning may find an exit without forcing up the cover.
The churn-body is mounted on rockers in the following manner: Each rocker D is mortised into two standards, D D, having tapering shanks at their upper ends, which are received in metal sockets f f at the sides of the body, which can readily be lifted off the rockers for storage or transportation.
The body is provided with a plug or a faucet, g, at one end, through which the buttermilk can be drawn off, and the water in the bottom. chamber can in like manner be drawn off through a plug or faucet, h.
What I claim as my invention is- The body A, mounted on rockers, and provided with the cover 0, false bottom A, tube B, and strengthening-frame b b b b 1) substantially as described.
