Description
Feb. 7, 1933. w. o. THEWES FRAME OR STOCK FOR PIPE CUTTERS AND LIKE TOOLS Filed March 9, 1931 m M g Patented Feb. 7, 1 9 33 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE mm 0. m 0] NORTH BIDGEVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOB To max m1: TOOL oonm, 01' NORTH BIDGIVILLE, OHIO, A CORPORATION 01 OEIO man 03 STOCK FOB PIPE CUTTEBB AND LIKE TOOLS Application fled larch 8,
This invention relates to a frame or stock for pipe cutters and like tools and includes among its objects to provide a frame or stock of this class which may be cast to close limits, eliminating machining operations and yet at the same time is unusually strong and durable and relativel low in cost of manufacture.
With the oregoing and other ob ects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a frame or stock embodying the features of the invention; 4 y t Figure 2 is a view in perspective of a remforcing core or insert, and
Figure 3 is a view in section taken on the line 33, Fig. 1. p
The frame is generallyindicated at 5 and is preferably made of suitable dle-casting metal. It is well known that as the cross sec tional area of parts cast from this metal increases, the pocket-forming tendency of the inner structure increases, thus weakenin the article and renderin it liable to brea age. It is therefore, desira le to limit the thickness of the walls of the frame. With this end in view the frame is cast on a reinforcing core or insert 6, Fig. 2, which may be made of steel or the like, and is formed with key holes This core forms the inner structure of the frame, and the latter is die-cast thereon,
.the molten metal filling in the key holes,
shrinking, and locking the core and cast metal together in such manner that the core cannot loosen and weaken the frame. The
' metal walls 60 around the insert may belimited to a certain thickness, the core or insert furnishing a strong reinforce for the frame and at the same time permitting the greater bulk of the frame to be made of cast metal.
The frame is formed with side walls 8 which are preferably spaced or diverge from comprising 19:1. Serial Io. 581,188.-
the walls 6a, to reduce the thickness of these walls and the amount of metal used in the frame. At points along the length ofthe frame, the walls 8 may be braced by cross walls or fillings 9.
It will be seen that the frame may be cast to size and requires no machining, while at the same time it embodies the necessary strength and weight and may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
I claim:
1. A frame for pipe cutters and like tools, a reinforcing core and a covering of cast metal interlocked with the core defining the frame structure, the cast metal portion of the frame being of reduced thickness to correspondingly lessen the pocket-forming tendency of the metal.
. 2. A frame for pipe cutters and like tools formed of cast metal and having a reinforcing core in the form of a perforated plate of steel or like strengthening material, the cast metal portion of the frame being of reduced thickness to correspondingly lessen the pocket-formin tendency of the metal.
3. A frame or pipe cutters and like tools,
comprising a core of reinforcing metal provided with key holes, and a covering of cast metal defining the frame structure, the side walls of the frame being spaced'from the central portion thereof, the cast metal portions of the frame being limited to a thickness which will prevent pocket formations in the metal (luring casting.
4. A frame for pipe cutters and like tools having walls of cast metal which are of reduced thickness to reduc the pocket-forming tendency of themetal, the body of the frame being reinforced by a core to permit a reduction in tl e thickness of cast metal of said body.
5. A frame for pi cutters and like tools having cast metal wa ls which are of reduced, substantially uniform thickness throughout, and a reinforcing core about which the body of the frame is cast to permit such reduction in thickness and strengthen the frame.
6. A frame for pi cutters and like tools having walls forxne of relatively soft cast metal and a reinforcing core of steel or like material, the cast metal portion of the frame being reduced in thickness to in turn reduce the pocket-forming tendency of the metal.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature this 28th day of *Februa- 1931.
