ACTUATING MECHANISM FOR AN ELECTRIC SAFETY RAZOR Filed Nov. 18, 1929 INVENTOR. flijFi/zurfl. Zjae g R .22 a 7 2 Pa tented Jan. 10, 1933 ummnzsmm PATENT or-rice An'rimn n. nome; or oAxrAnx, rumors, nssrenon r WILLIAM J. CAMERON, or
'1 CHIGAGQILLINOIS .A G'JYU'ATING- MECHANISM IOR AN ELECTRIC SAFETY r Application filed November is, 1929. Serial No. 407,832.
My. present invention relates to safety razors and it has morezparticular reference to a razor that is providedwith means for vibrating the blade holder through the medium of an electric current.
' To carry out my invention I have provided facoil having a hollow core in which an armature is placed and caused to oscillateor move rapidly when the current is passing through the: coil. The post for carryingthe razor or other tool head is mounted in such manner that the rapidmovements of the armature are imparted to the tool, or to the cutting edge thereof, mounted in the head. By this action the tool or blade will be given a vibratory movement that is in a direction substantially alon rm line of its a cutting edge. Thus, when a razor blade is. secured in the head "and is moved across the flesh in a direction transverse to the edge of the blade as is usual I when shaving, the blade is vibrated longitudinally' of its cutting edge so that there is a shearing or oblique cutting action upon the hair. r
The structure which I have devised is made and assembled in a manner so that it provides 7 a handy article and the parts are readily "housed within a small handle or grip. While the parts are of small dimensions they are nevertheless simple'in construction and possess the quality of sturdiness. The device is novel in construction, is easy to manipulate, and it may be readily taken apart for inspection or repair. I prefer to carry out my invention and to accomplish the objects thereof in substantially the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims. Reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing that forms a part of this specification. In the drawing I V Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of my improved safety razor with the handle ordhousing removed and the tool head omitte Figure 2 is a vertical side elevation of the razor operating structure, viewed from the right side of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a schematic view showing the layout of the electrical parts and circuit.
The drawing is to be understood as more or less schematic for the purpose of illustrating a typical or preferred form in'which my invention may be made, and in said drawing I have employed similar reference characters to designate like parts wherever they appear throughout the several views.
In constructing my improved razor I provide a spool of insulatingmaterial consisting of a hollow core 5 that is provided with an energizing winding 6, and the lower inner end of the core has a retainer flange 7 that has a transverse aperture 8 for the passage of a conductor 9' leading from the adjacent end of the winding to an iron bar 10 mounted in the bore of the core and projecting beyond the flange 7 The upper or outer end of the core is provided with a plug 11 of greater thickness than the flange 7 and it is screwthreaded upon its exterior so that the structure carried 70 by the spool or core may be readily inserted and screwed into a hollow tubular handle or grip 12 the latter being preferably made of asuitable insulating material such as bakelite or the like. A plug l3, having a central (5 aperture 14, is screwed into the opposite or lower end of the handle or grip as shown in Figure 2.
At its upper or outer end the spool has a yieldable element in the form of a leaf spring 80 15 secured to it by means of screw 16 that passes through one end thereof and enters the plug 11, and said leaf spring extends transversely across the plug so as to bridge the bore of the core. A guide pin 17, projecting from the portion of the plug diametrically opposite the screw 16, enters a hole in the adjacent end of the leaf spring and prevents the latter being moved laterally upon the screw. The spring carries the tool post 18 upon which a razor head or other tool is removably mounted, said post being of any desired construction but preferably of the type disclosed in my co-pending application for Letters Patent for a safety razor structure filed November 18th, 1929, Serial No. 407,830. V
The lower portion of the iron bar 10, Where it projects outside the spool, is reduced in dimensions to provide an extension 19 that 1 0 a 1,808,620 Q I a is screwedintothe adjacent 11 per end of a the armature is very rapid and the impaoh x 2x13111120 projecting'hpwardl om the base are transmitted to the ost and thereby a i I I 321 v elbaseyas'will parted'to the tool hol er or blade carried" of diskslik'eahafiejand has a upon the st so that when a razor blade is 1 a in, r Qce in whiQ aeross plate 22 used it wi be iven a movement parallel to a Q; is; fliifiibcddfld erjneaored. its longitudin cutting edge". g
