This invention relates generally to new and useful improvements in manifolding attachments for typewriting machines or thelike, although more particularly to the table or guide for the work sheets. 7
ong the severalobjects of this invention are to provide a table for guiding a plurality of superposed work sheets forwardly to the platen from a point in rear of the machine frame; to provide laterally adjustable guides for the work sheets whereby work sheets of difi'ere'nt widths may be employed; to mount all of the edge guides for lndependent lateral adjustments whereby one work sheet may be adjustably positioned laterally relative to the other sheet to suit difi'erent working conditions, and to provide separate means common to each pair of edge guides for releasably securing the guides 1n adjusted positions.
With these and other objects in view 7 which will more fully appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by following the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawin s, the typewritin machine includes a main rame A' on which a carriage B is supported for letter space movements. A platen O is fixed to the lower end of a collating frame'D which is pivoted to the carriage to swing forwardly and rearwardly upon movement of the carriage return lever E. Type bars F cooperate with the platen, and a main ribbon G is disposed in front of the platen. Work sheets H are led forwardly to the platen over a work guide or table I attached to the carriage from a point in rear of the machine frame, thence over a roller J journaled on the carriage, thence downwardly under a guide roller K journaled' on the carriage below. the platen, and thence upwardly past the platen and have their upper edge portions clamped to a truck L which is mounted onthe collating frame D for line space movements, the truck being line spaced upon movement of thecarriage return lever E. A spool supporting frame M is disposed in rear of the machine frame and is attached to the carriage to move therewith, the frame including a rear wall 5 and roller 6 which ride along a rail 7 attached to the main frame A. A plurality of ribbon spools N are rotatably mounted in the spool frame M and the carbon strips or ribbons O are led forwardly along the left sidefof the carriage, thence along and in front of the platen and in interleaved relation with the work sheets H, and thence rearwardly along the right hand side of the carriage to a ribbon feeding means P which is actuated from the collating frame.
The work table or guide I includes a flat supporting frame formed of sheet metal and comprises spaced side bars 8, 8 which are connected by front and rear cross bars 9 and 10 respectively. The table is disposed above the spool frame M and projects rearwardly therebeyond, the rear wall 5 of the spool frame being riveted to the underface of the front crossbar 9 as shown in Figure 4, to thereby form a central support for the table. Attached to the front ends of the side bars 8, 8 are'forwardly extending bracket arms 11, 11 which are detachably connected tothe end plates 12,12 of the carriage by bolts'13, 1 3. Braces 14, 14 are connected at their upper ends to the rear crossbar 10 and at their lower ends to the rear plate 5 of the spool frame M.
Mounted on the front cross bar 9 for independent lateral adjustments therealong, are spaced edge guides Q, Q. Each guide which is formed of sheet metal,'is of U-shaped cross section, and comprises spaced upper and lower plates 15, 1-6 and a connecting wall 17. These guides extendin parallelism and in planes at right angles to the cross bar 9, and open inwardly to receive the side edge portions of one of the work sheets H. The cross bar 9 is provided with two longitudinal slots 18, 18 arranged'in longitudinal alinement. Normally ineffective clamps l9, 19 are respectively connected rigidly to the guides Q,
and are mounted on the cross ar "9 for adjustments along the slots 18, 18. Each clamp comprises a relatively stationary clamping plate 20 having one end portion 20 resting upon the cross bar 9 and overlapping the associated slot 18, and having depending uide ears 21, 21 which project downwar ly through the slot. The other end portion 22 of the plate is upwardly offset and rigidly connected to the lower plate 16 of the associated edge guide Q by rivets 23. The guide ears 21, 21 are formed with alined bearing openings 24, 24 for receiving a pivot pin 25. A relatively movable clamping plate 26 is centrally formed with a trans verse groove or-bearing 27 to receive the pivot pin 25, the plate on one side of the bearing 27 being flat and the other side being curved downwardly out of the Elane of the fiat side.
An operating cam sha 28 is disposed between the flat sides of the movable clamping plates 26 of both edgeguides Q and the underface of the crossbar 9, and has its ends journaled in depending flanges 29, 29 of the side bars 8, 8 of the sup ortlng frame. After either one or both edge guides have been adjusted, the cam shaft 28 is turned to cause the peripheral surface of the shaft'to simultaneously engage and thereby swing both movable clamping plates 26, 26 about their pivot pins 25, 25, thus causing the end portions20l.

The cam shaft 28 is rovided, with a screw 32 constituting a limiting or stop pin which engages the under face of the cross bar 9 to limit the turnin of the shaft and to retain the shaft in its e ective clamping position.
The bracket arms 11, 11 are respectively provided with upstanding arms 33, 33 to which are connected 2. cross bar 34 provided with longitudinally alined slots 35, 35. Clamps 36, 36 which ,are substantially identical with the clamps 19, 19 are respectively connected rigidly to upper edge guides R, R, and are mounted on the cross bar 34 for adjustments along the slots 35, 35. Each clamp 36 includes a relatively stationary clamping plate 37 having a pair of ears 38, 38 to which are connected a pivot pin 39, and a relatively movable clamping plate 40 which is constructed like the clamping plate 26 and ispivotally mounted on the pin 39. The edge guides R, R are disposed 1n superposed relation' above the edge guides Q, Q and below the cross bar 34; The relatively stationary clamping plate 37 has slidable contact with the under face of the cross bar 34 and the cars 38, 38 of the clamp projectupwardly through the slots 35, 35. The relatively movable or pivoted clamping plate 40 has sliding enga ement with the upper surface of the cross ar 34. A cover plate 41 is secured to the cross bar 34 and is provided with depending end flanges 42, 42 which'are perforatedto form bearings for the ends of a cam shaft 43 which is similar in construction to the cam shaft 28. From the foregoing, it will be observed that I have provided two pairs of'superposed edge guides for the work sheets M, and have mounted these guides in a manner to permit allof them to be independently adjustable laterally whereby differen't'widths of work sheets may be readily accommodated or whereby the lateral positionof one work I sheet relative to another "ma be readily obtained, and that I have provided "an operatand including a'pair' of clamping plates respectively disposed-above and below the support and including guiding'meansextending into the slot, and "a manually operable cam shaft disposed between and cooperating with the support and with one of said plates for rendering said clamp efiective.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a work support having a. slot, and means for guiding a work sheet along the support comprising an edge guide, a normally inedective clamp attached to the guide and including a pair of clamping plates respectively disposed above and below the support, one of said plates being fixed to the edge guide and provided with a pair of ears extending into the slot, a pivot pm secured to said ears, the other plate being pivoted intermediate its ends to said pin, and a manually operable cam journaled on the support and located between said support and the pivoted plate.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a work support having a slot, and means for guiding a work sheet along the support comprising an edge guide, a normally ineflective clamp attached to the guide and including a pair of clamping plates respectively disposed above and below the support, one of said plates being fixed to the edge guide and provided with a pair of ears extending into the slot, a pivot pin secured to said ears, the other plate being transversely bent to form a bearing engageable with said pin, and
a manually operable cam journaled' on the support and located between said support and the pivoted plate.
