REFRIGERATING APPARATUS Filed May 25, 1925 Patented Jan. 3, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE OTTO M. {UIHIIIIUIIIELRS, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO FRIGIDAIRE CORPORATION, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE REFRIGERATING APPARATUS Application filed May 25,
' shown.
' In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the improved valve, showing the same attached to a valve plate of a compressor;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of a compressor, showing the improved valve, the section being taken on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of said valve.
Referring to the drawing, a compressor 20 is shown, provided with two cylinders 21 and 22, which receive two pistons 23 and 24. The head of each piston is provided with inlet valves 25, through which fluid passes from the crankcase (not shown) of the compressor,
into the compression chamber of the cylinders. The tops of the cylinders carry a valve plate 27 which in turn carries a cylinder head 28. The valve plate 27 is provided with ports 29 and 30, and the upper portion of said plate is recessed as at 31 and 32, to provide flat valve seats 33 and 34.
The valves for the seats 33 and 34 include a normally flat leaf spring 35, which extends beyond the valve seats 33 and 34. Buttons 36 and 37 constructed of'non-metallic vibration-absorbing material such as bakelized linen cloth, or the like, rest upon the spring 35 and are provided with boss portions 39.
The bottom of each button is flat and is of suflicient area to completely cover the opening beneath it and extends and overlaps a substantial portion of the seat surrounding the opening. A second leaf spring 40 extends parallel with the spring 35 and is spaced 1925. Serial No. 32,560.
therefrom by a spacing member 41. These leaf springs are secured at their middle portions by screws 42, to the valve plate 27, the screws also passing through the member 41 for maintaining the same in position. Leaf spring 40 is perforated as shown at 44, the perforations being above the valve ports 29 and 30, and receiving the boss portions 39 of the buttons 36 and 37. The buttons are interposed between the springs 40 and 35, whereby the spring 35 is yieldingly held upon the seats 33 and 34, through the action of the spring 40.
The construction and arrangement of the spring 35 with respect to the seats 33 and 34 are such that the valve is substantially leakproof. The top of the valve plate 27, at which portion the spring 35 is secured, is in the same horizontal plane as the seats 33 and 34. Therefore, when the spring 35 is in position to close the ports, it will not be flexed. Moreover since the portion of the button which engages the valve is fiat and of sufiicient area'to substantially cover the flat seat, the action of spring 40 in holding the valve against the seat has no tendency to distort the valve on the seat. Thus no matter how firmly the valve is held against the seat it is always held between two flat surfaces. In this manner it is necessary only to provide a flat seat for the spring 35 in the plane of the top surface of the plate 27.
Since in this construction, a flat leaf spring provides a valve and a fiat surface only is necessary for the seat, and the buttons 36 and 37 are maintained in operative position with the valves merely by spring 40, a relatively simple valve has been provided, which can be manufactured at a low cost. The valve is also quiet in operation. If during the operation, spring 35 should separate from the buttons 36 and 37,or should the buttons separate from the spring 40, there will be substantially no noise created by the reengagement of these elements, because the buttons are constructed 95 of vibration-absorbing material such as bakelized linen cloth, which when engaged by said spring will create substantially no noise.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed, constitutes 100 a preferred form, it is to be understood that 0t er forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What is claimed isas'follows:
1. A valve device comprising in combination a valve seat, a leaf spring forming a valve, one point of the valve being fixed with respect to the seat so that the valve closes on the seat through its inherent tendency to assume its normal shape, a second leaf spring, one point of which is fixed with respect to the seat, a thrust member separate from said springs and placed between the springs whereby the second spring yieldingly holds the valve against the seat, said thrust member being formed of vibration-absorbing material.
2. A valve device comprising in combination a valve seat, a leaf spring forming a valve, one point of the valve being fixed with respect to the seat so that the valve closes on the seat through its inherent tendency to assume its normal shape, a second leaf spring, one point of which is fixed with respect to the seat, a thrust member separate from said springs and placed between the springs .whereby the second spring yieldingly hol the valve against the seat, said second spring being provided with an opening and the thrust member being provided with a reduced portion extending through the opening.
3. A valve device comprising in combination a valve seat, a valve cooperating with said seat and'in'cluding a leaf spring, a second spring yieldingly holding the valve against the seat, and a thrust member formed of vibration-absorbing material interposed between the springs.
4. A valve apparatus comprising in combination, a valve seat, a flap valve cooperating with said seat, a spring, a separate member disposed between the valve and spring for yieldingly holding the valve on the seat thru the action of the spring, and means common to said valve and spring for maintaining the valve in operative relation with the seat and for maintaining the spring in operative relation with the valve.
5. A valve apparatus comprising in combination, a plurality-of valve seats, a plurality of valves comprising a single leaf spring covering'said seats, a second leaf spring, and separate members disposed between the springs adjacent the valve seats for holding the first leaf spring on the seats thru the action of the second leaf spring.
In testimony whereof I hereto afiix my signature.
