Ordinarily mattresses may be turned to 10 present either end at the head and also either side uppermost; occasionally they are made in such manner that one side has a different feel or texture, relatively soft or hard, and some have fixedly incorporated in them metallicspringsas a unit. In the present development it is an ob ject to provide. a mattress, using the term generically, so constructed as to permit re-* versing of its sides and furthermore, which can be inverted or in other words turned in side out, thereby presenting double the num{ ber of surfaces available in an ordinary mattress, together with corresponding changes in kind and color of facing material,

The mattress illustrated in Figure l is of the usual elongated rectangular type in its general appearance and will be seen to consist of two body sections 10 and 11 substantially equal in their general dimensions.

but upon inverting the sections to present the tickings' B-B outwardly, by folding the sections reversely from that shown, the strip 16 would be on the outside, as these two strips 1 at both ends, the strips 15-16 are both out longitudinally to present members 15', 16',

, each pair of strip edges being provided with hookless fastener elements 17-18 served by a runner 19 arranged for manual operation from each side, as obviously it will be reversed when the mattress body portions are turned inside out.

The space between the strips 15l6 is preferably padded as at 20 to constitute a cushion border on each of the four sides giving an attractive box-like appearance and increasing the comfort of its use.

The preferred form, seen in Figure 2,

These partitions form two individual chambers in each of the mattress body sec-' tions and may be filled with any preferred material, as the curled hair in chamber 23, kapok or silk floss in chamber 24, feathers or lambs wool in chamber 25 and cotton batts in chamber 26, these being used selectively to suit cold or hot seasons, and conditions and comfort of the individual using the mattress, any preferred substance being brought into operative position by proper manipulation.

If it be desired a spring action may be obtained by inserting between the two main body sections 10l1, a removable section composed of a series of conical or spirally wound springs 28 suitably secured at their opposite ends by cross connections 29 to constitute a unit, which may be covered with burlap or other strong fabric.

This arrangement is possible due to the flexibility of the padded borders 20, andby reason of the ready reversibility of the main sections any of the four surfaces may be placed outermost.

It is further noted that insecticides, germicides, disinfectants, Perfumery, and the like, may be placed between the sections in the form of crystals, spraying or any convenient form.

Although the improvements have been described with considerable detail and with respect to certain particular forms of the invention, it is not desiredto be limited to such details since many changes and modifications may well be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention .in its broadest aspect.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is

A bed mattress comprising two substantially equal stufied rectangular portions, each having padded rolls extending circumambiently along their upper and lower peripheral edges, 9. pair of fabric hinge strips of uniform width attached at the junction of each roll and its corresponding peripheral edge to extend from one portion to the other along one of their side edges, separate fabric strips attached at one of their edges in paired relation at the junction of each roll and its corresponding peripheral edge to extend around the opposite side edge and both end edges, padding interposed between the strips on'said sides and edges, and slidable means for connecting and disconnecting the unsecured edges of said separate strips.
