10 be applied to the parts of an electric system while the same is wet, as well as when it is dry, and will operate immediately to insulate the parts and restore the previously shorted system to operative condition.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a composition which may be readily spread over the wiring and other electrical parts of engines and which will adhere thereto and form thereover a protecting coating or skin which will remain unafiected by rain water, salt water, or any of the usual atmospheric conditions which frequently operate to interfere with the proper performance of electric systems particularly 25 those systems used in airplanes, motor vehicles and the like.
The present composition is particularly suitable for use on the ignition systems of airplane motors, especially the motors of hydroplanes.
It has been determined that the cause of a great many airplane deaths has been stalling motors, due to the formation of vapor on the electric wires and inside of the distributor heads, caused by sudden changes in atmospheric conditions. By the use of the present composition this vapor is prevented from forming electrical connections between the wires and other current carrying elements.
Another use to which the present composition may be put, is for protecting telephone and like cables, which are laid beneath the street and Which frequently become damp with sewer gas and ground moisture and coated with frost. These cables are composed of hundreds of small wires. When these become damp, due to leaks in the lead sheathes of the cable, they have to be removed and each wire dried. into an opening made in the cable in the vicinity of the short, and all of the wires will be coated and insulated thereby.
The composition constituting the present invention consists of the following ingredients taken in the appended approximate proportions Per cent Boiled linseed oil Japan dryer 26 Olive oil 2O Pumice stone 1 Brown coloring oil 1 The linseed oil in the composition oxidizes in the usual manner and forms a protecting skin over the covered surface against moisture and other atmospheric conditions and the japan dryer supplements the oil and aids in its oxidation.
The olive oil prevents the linseed oil and dryer from becoming too hard and brittle and keeps the same from cracking. In other words, it keeps the coating formed flexible. In addition, this oil operates as an insulator to maintain the temperature of the solution and the covering formed thereby fairly constant at all times.
The pumice stone gives body and substance to the mixture, makes it easier toapply and also acts as an insulator.
As previously stated, the purpose of the composition is to protect the coils, wires, plugs, distributor caps, and all other parts of any ignition system from dampness, moistureand any other atmospheric conditions. If the ignition system, or any part thereof, is already wet, this solution will immediately prevent short circuits and prevent leakage of electric current from the ignition systenn It will also be readily apparent that the composition may be readily applied to the wires and other parts of a system by means of a brush from which it will readily flow and form an even coating over the body to which it is applied. By employing the japan dryer the composition will oxidize sufficiently rapidly to prevent its gravitating to the under side of the wire or other body on which it is placed, and dripping therefrom before it is set.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. An insulating composition of the character described having as the essential ingredients boiled linseed oil, apan dryer, olive oil, and pumice stone.
2. Acomposition for insulating electrical elements consistingof boiled linseed 0il 52%, japan dryer 26%, olive oil 20%, pumice stone 1%, and a suitable coloring material constituting the remaining 1%.
